During a recent drive across Newfoundland, I took a few minutes to snap a few pictures of Grand Falls. Since I didn't have much time, the pics are incomplete (lacking pics of Windsor, strip malls, modern housing, etc.) and not great quality, but here they are for anyone who is interested.

Brief History:
Grand Falls was established in 1905, with the construction of the paper mill (built by British proprietor of the Daily Mail, Alfred Harmsworth, 1st Viscount Northcliffe through his Anglo-Newfoundland Development Company Limited). Only employees of the paper company were permitted to live in the town at that time. Nearby Windsor grew up just north of Grand Falls, and today both jointly form the town of Grand Falls-Windsor, population 13,558(CA). At the time of its construction, the town grew up rapidly, and was considered to be thoroughly modern in planning. (The community was built based on the theories of Ebenezer Howard and the Garden city movement.)

The first one is an aerial from heritage.nf.ca.

Neat photos! I have been interested in seeing this city ever since reading that it was a model town created in wartime with the purpose of keeping a secure source of newsprint for overseas markets... A strange reason to start a town!

Cool shots!! I was just there recently, and Clarenville, Gander, Deer Lake, Pasdena, and Corner Brook for work. I liked Corner Brook, it had a cool feel to it. (Alas, no photos!! of Corner Brook) :(
I post pics of the bridge I did take there....

Curbside diagonal parking on the main strip, reminds me of Grand Falls NB. Anyway, nice shots. I've always wondered what it looked like, now I know. I've got to find some excuse to actually spend some time on the rock, at least, some excuse my boss and fiancee will buy.
