Grand Bank is an old town on the Burin Pennsula. It is about half an hour from Marystown. It is a unique town in that it has an older "downtown" intact. These are my photos.
Location on map.

There is a lot of emphasis or regional manufacturing. If some product is local, "Manufactured right here" is used.

I love those tiny Newfoundland fishing towns. They've got more character than 99% of any other places in the country.

Thanks for posting this. Nice to see some of these old Nfld towns with so much potential for tourism. Grand Bank was once a wealthy and prosperous place, but now has a declining population (2,580, down from 2,841 in 2001; -9.2%) like most other small towns in Nfld.

Mmmm...fishing town goodness. Strange to hear from an urban forumer, but I've always liked the quaintness of these kinds of fishing towns (with the local business strip of the general store, hardware store, fishing supplies, and local post office). Thanks for sharing.

Me too. I absolutely adore downtown Sussex for this very reason. It has all the little shops one could ever want, it is very pedestrian friendly, and it's very charming and historic in its own right. It's a shame they're adding all of those big box stores in Sussex, it's taking away from the core of the town that is so vibrant and beautiful.

Small towns that develop out of suburbia are missing this kind of 'downtown' core because they were developed as bedroom communities and are centered around the automobile, not around the people that want to use the city as a place to live and work.

Actually many little outports actually don't have a "downtown", but some have a big store/video/resturaunt/ all bundled into one. I asked a lot of people, and was told the centre of it all used to be mainly the docks and wharfs, along with the old fish processing plants. "That is one aspect of how NL communities are unique" I was told. But they do all have a local post office, stores, and local businesses.

In some ways, these little outports are simplicity at its finest.

Indeed, and I always thought I was odd for finding these towns charming. Maybe I am, but at least I have company. St. Peter's is similar, as is Arichat, both in NS (Cape Breton to be exact), and have thankfully avoided the big store phenomenon sweeping towns small and large lately.

The Burin is one of the few parts of Newfoundland I never got to explore. Thanks for the tour.
