I watched them start pouring close to the elevator shaft. Seems that is when you took some of these. Did you see a bald guy in a black leather jacket?
All I can say for sure is there was a older gentlemen standing near me with black clothing on ... do you smoke cigars (or at lest it looked like one).
I was there pretty much right when they started puring since i remember the cement trucks lining to pour.

I love watching this project being built, but the closer they get to ground level the more awkward it becomes. I was there the other day and after about 10 minutes one of the workers kept looking up at me (probably how I would feel if someone came to my work and stared at me all day) otherwise I could spend hours watching.
Anyone know if they are working weekends or nights to try and get the next pour in before xmas?

You're right about the workers looking up at the people watching them work. They did the same thing to me and gave me particularly interesting looks for taking pictures of the site. I've walked by the site in the evening on different occasions and they seem to work at night when the weather is favourable. If the weather in December is warm and dry, I'd say that they'll go for a pour before xmas.

Some of the rebar was down on the south end, and there were only a few people working around 3pm, looked like they were installing electrical. I'm guessing the rebar will be going down tomorrow.
The north end had some of the forms up for the walls and the column forms were put together on the ground ready to be put in place, I wouldn't be surprised to see another pour if not the end of the week very early next week.

January Update from the Trillium website:
January has arrived and the Trillium slabs have reached street level. The weather this winter has been very cooperative, allowing our form work and rebar companies to move forward in good time. For the last 8 weeks we have poured concrete almost daily for either slabs, columns or walls. On December 12 we poured the 1st half of the P3 slab, with the 2nd half being poured on December 18. The ice and minus temperatures with a windchill have made it challenging for the trades to work outside but they have persisted. When a slab is poured it requires a lot of coordination. The concrete trucks (Ocean Contractors) have to be scheduled along with the company (Maritime Testing) that tests the concrete for strength and the company (Precision) that places the concrete. The concrete truck arrives and with assistance of a form worker a bucket, either holding 1 ½ yards or 3 yards is filled with concrete and then lifted by crane over to the area that needs to be poured. The concrete is released from the bottom of the bucket and then returns to the truck to be filled again. This process continues until the area being poured is complete. For ‘pours’ that require a lot of concrete we use ‘Ocean Contractors’ pumper trucks to make the job more efficient. The parking garage ramps are poured separately and to date we have 2 of 3 complete.

The city is such a contender amongst other Canadian cities of the same size.

The reality is, there are a number of very strategic downtown developments currently under construction:

LSRC
Farmers Market
Various Starfish Properties

Actually I would be concerned, its more then covering the rebar.
Concrete is strenghtened by the stones that are in it. That little bit that came off was probably just stuck to the forms when they were taking them off, nothing too serious, as when you look at the picture, the stones and sand are of a good mix variable to the ammount of cement. Proper hyrdation could not occur if there was not sufficient stone and sand, and would make the concrete inferior quality. It's a good sign, and besides, it's all reinforced, so if there is a small area of weaker concrete, the reinforcement will carry the load on to stronger concrete.

It's a little odd that they didn't even try to market it after all of the effort that they went through for the development process.
I don't think the market for condos in Halifax is that soft: http://www.condosnovascotia.com/blogs/paul_viau/archive/2010/1/3/2009-the-year-in-review-condo-sales-in-halifax-nova-scotia.aspx
It takes a while for them to sell but the fact is that there is definitely a decent amount of demand. The equivalent of 3-4 UG developments sold in 2009.

This building will essentially complete what I call the "edge of downtown". :D
If you look at South Park from Morris to Sackville every section will be crammed full of high-rises with the exception of the Dairy Queen lot. With the parks across the street it looks like a vertical wall dividing Downtown from the rest of the city. If all goes well the YCMA will fill in the only mid-block gap.
Does anyone know if the powerline out front on South Park St is going to be buried in the next year or so?

I wonder how long it will be until they bring the crane up to its full height?
I've mentioned this before but I really like the mix of buildings along this stretch of South Park Street. They remind me of something you'd see in a larger city, and the wide sidewalks, gardens, and Victoria Park are all much more spacious than the older parts of the downtown.
The low point is the Dairy Queen building. Hopefully that will be torn down soon and redeveloped along with the lot next door. Has there been any news about that? The fire happened a while ago.

This, along with cogswell if it ever gets torn down, is where I think highrise development in Halifax should be focused. The wider sidewalks and streets along with flat plots of land are ideal for tall buildings; when you cram a bunch of highrises along streets like Hollis, with it's narrow sidewalks and road, it can begin to feel claustrophobic.

I like that feeling... too much of Halifax is just wide open spaces and empty lots. People think that this is a good idea and that tall buildings create wind tunnels... but its pretty hard to avoid a seabreeze when no buildings stand between you and the ocean.
Young and Windsor is just plain scary, I hope that things improve in that area in terms of density.

I don't think that worldlyhaligonian was being sarcastic. I also like urban canyons (to some degree). I would prefer to see highrises packed into the downtown area than have a bunch of short towers. In most cities, this is where the skyscrapers are located. To me, 5-10 storey office towers belong in Sydney, NS (no offense), not downtown Halifax.

March 15, 2010
WM Fares Management team is happy to tell you that we are out of the 40’ deep hole and on level 200. We are on schedule and construction is going very well. Sales continue to increase as more and more people are showing an interest in purchasing. With the arrival of March so too has the good weather. Since our last project update we have completed the formwork on level 100. This level has 8 different elevations which had to be poured separately and was complete by February 16. The weather challenged us in February with the arrival of 30+ cm of snow on the 17th which created two days of snow removal and again on February 25th and 26th we were faced with high winds and a large amount of rain. The crane cannot operate under these conditions.
During the winter months and still at this time of year, when the night time temperature drops below 0, it is necessary for us to use a heat source, such as propane, to heat the underside of a slab prior to and during concrete pouring. The perimeter of the area being heated is ‘tarped’ to keep the heat in. The propane cylinders must be stored in a steel cage on site for safety reasons, as you will see in one of our photos.
When our site manager decided to climb the tower crane ladder in February, we got some great photos of the city. These pictures were taken at 200’. The views are spectacular and are just a sample of the views that will be enjoyed by the Trillium condominium owners.
Now that our formwork is out of the ground and above street level, Arnoldin Form Work is able to begin using ‘flying forms’, large platforms that are built on site. The crane will fly these from slab to slab, reducing the time it takes to build forms.
As the rebar and form work continue many construction details are being coordinated. At this time our focus is on scheduling the exterior envelope of the building which includes; exterior steel stud, glass rock (exterior sheathing), blue skin, insulation, brick, glazing (windows & curtain walls) and precast. The ‘precast’ is an architectural concrete panel which has a pigment added to the concrete to provide color. You can see a sample of the panel shown at the ‘Strescon’ plant in the attached photos

I think that they plan to light up the whole penthouse level.
Construction should move a bit quicker now, assuming that commercial floor plates are taller than residential ones. Great photos DJ!

Especially now that it will be getting smaller as it rises.

If I'm not mistaken won't they also be switching to steel (or something similar) for the residential floors which will be a lot faster to install than concrete?

Too bad they can't go at the same pace as when they built the Chrysler building in NYC... 4 floors per week!! :-)

Steel frame atop a few concrete floors? Interesting...
For reference, here is a rendering which I think is the current version of the design:

Just noticed there is now a diagram for this in the diagram section. Looks good.
Was also walking by the site today and some red brick has started going up on the south west corner of the building. Where the entrance to the office level appears to be.

The Trillium is certainly becoming unique and it isn't even at 1/4 of its final height yet!

Thanks for the photos.
I like how this building properly addresses the street and corner - it is curved and it has nice tall first storey windows so it will feel more open to somebody walking by. Too many new buildings in Halifax have a ground level that is about half as high off the ground as it should be and an entrance that looks like it was placed totally randomly.

the bricks look nice and vintage looking from these pics....I like that .....none of those FAUX-looking early 90's bricks

This development impresses me a lot - I am really looking forward to the end product. It also gives me hope that if they piece together more lots in this block we could have some very nice condos to bring more people downtown.

South Park Street is almost built out to South Street - there are two stretches of historic houses remaining.
The Dairy Queen building would be a good candidate for replacement, along with the houses and small apartment building east of the Trillium site (though I doubt as much height would be allowed there - maybe 8 storeys).

Actually I was playing with the HRM GIS and looking at this area last night with the viewplane and height precinct maps on. This block and the one next to it with the existing highrise and townhouses, are the only two blocks on Spring Garden where the viewplanes don't apply - so the block that the Trillium is in has the downtown zoning and no view plane restriction.
I personally would like to see the DQ building combine with the building containing your father's moustache and the two older homes - to create a large plate commercial base, then residential above. I'd also love to see the office tower be taken down - I think it's just an awful building and just doesn't fit in at all - replace that with a large commercial floor plate podium building (say a street way of 3 stories and then a residential podium above).

By office tower you mean the ugly white one that credit union is in I think?

May 4, 2010, 5:18 PM
I believe so. And yeah, it's a pretty ugly, dated building. You can tell that they were expecting more highrises to be built beside it by the lack of windows, though (at least I'm assuming that's the reason)
