I take HWY 427 to work every day all the way to HWY 7 where it ends, just over a week or so ago I noticed they started clearing the land at the end of it and day by day started to head north clearing the land.

According to the official study website - http://427corridor.com/ - it isn't finished the study phase yet however it does look like they are already starting to work on the expansion of HWY 427.

If you on that website it shows the proposed path it will take.

An extension so that the highway to nowhere can extend further into nowhere.

Indeed, this will meet the province's objectives in preserving agricultural land, halting urban sprawl, and reducing commute times in the Greater Golden Horseshoe.

Can you say "lip service"?

really by extending that highway the Eastern side of Brampton will become homes and Bolton will explode... and area near Nobleton would grow.

Not a good idea.

It will not relieve congestion as most traffic goes from the Highway 7 area and not much further north.

How far is the greenbelt from the current end of the 427 at highway 7? Although I would hate to see this expansion create more sprawl, i do think that it should be extended northward towards Collingwood, because it takes far too long to get there and highway 26 is usually beyond capacity. So ideally, the new route would not be a catalyst for sprawl but would be a good, effective transportation route linking the bruce peninsula area to the gta (here's for hoping ;) )!

The greenbelt will not stop sprawl. Waterloo Region, Guelph, and Brantford are west of the greenbelt and thousands of people commute to the GTA from there everyday. Not to mention Barrie to the north of the greenbelt. The greenbelt would have to be about 100 kilometers thick to truly stop sprawl. Highway 427 will be a magnet for sprawl on the other side of the greenbelt.

A classic case of the right hand having no clue what the left hand is doing. The MTO is really out touch with the times, and I get the idea that it largely operates independently from the rest of the government except for the occasional pork barreling.

Most people at MTO are highway/car people through and through. The mandate they have is to move cars etc, quickly and efficiently without any forethought as to what the impact of more highways, wider highways etc, will have on the current built and future environment.

This will improve the commute times for communities that don't yet exist.

The Environmental Assessment for the 427 hasn't been completed yet; therefore, a final route has not been chosen yet. I'm not entirely sure what the works being done are but it's probably some preliminary phase that's been approved to go ahead because no matter what route choice, it'll be required.
