Cool, this area needs some more taller buildings like this to offset the huge commercial sprawl of the area...

That has got to be one of the longest active development sites in this city ever. It has been under construction since 1998, I think. I've driven by it many times over the years and I swear there are only 4 guys building the whole thing.

According to OBJ, Phase I (the Hampton Inn) opened in September 1999, and that was after 18-24 months of construction. (link (http://archive.ottawabusinessjournal.com/archive_detail.php?archiveFile=1999/July/14/B413.xml&start=0&numPer=20&keyword=hampton+inn&sectionSearch=&begindate=1%2F1%2F1999&enddate=12%2F31%2F2009&authorSearch=&IncludeStories=1&pubsection=&page=&IncludePages=1&IncludeImages=1&mode=allwords&archive_pubname=The+Ottawa+Business+Journal%0A))

The plans for the Conference Center and second hotel were already in the works back in 2000. (link (http://archive.ottawabusinessjournal.com/archive_detail.php?archiveFile=2000/July/21/7820.xml&start=0&numPer=20&keyword=hampton+inn&sectionSearch=&begindate=1%2F1%2F1999&enddate=12%2F31%2F2009&authorSearch=&IncludeStories=1&pubsection=&page=&IncludePages=1&IncludeImages=1&mode=allwords&archive_pubname=The+Ottawa+Business+Journal%0A))

The Conference Centre wing (Phase II) was finished in 2006. (link (http://archive.ottawabusinessjournal.com/archive_detail.php?archiveFile=2006/March/29/OBJ-LocalBusiness/17106.xml&start=0&numPer=20&keyword=hampton+inn&sectionSearch=&begindate=1%2F1%2F1999&enddate=12%2F31%2F2009&authorSearch=&IncludeStories=1&pubsection=&page=&IncludePages=1&IncludeImages=1&mode=allwords&archive_pubname=OBJ-Print%0A%09%09%09))

Then they immediately expanded the Conference Centre (Phase III), which was completed in 2008. (link (http://archive.ottawabusinessjournal.com/archive_detail.php?archiveFile=2008/October/29/OBJ-Tourism/25425.xml&start=0&numPer=20&keyword=hampton+inn&sectionSearch=&begindate=1%2F1%2F1999&enddate=12%2F31%2F2009&authorSearch=&IncludeStories=1&pubsection=&page=&IncludePages=1&IncludeImages=1&mode=allwords&archive_pubname=OBJ-Print%0A%09%09%09))

And now Phase IV (a second hotel) is nearing topping-out. Wow!

Maybe they'll buy up the baseball stadium and keep on expanding. Those 4 guys are going to need more work soon.

My girlfriend and I laugh about that building every time we drive by it. There is never more than 1 or 2 workers on the site and it takes them forever to move up 1 storey. I think the same guy who operates the crane also has to pour the concrete; it takes skill.

I read long ago that Bona was building it using only cash.

Although I agree it has taken long, it's gonna look nice assuming the 2nd tower will be 14 stories as originally planned.

They seem to have toped it off. The north side has been bricked although it would appear the final floor might be inset from the main building which is being added now.

I'm not aware of a Hampton near Kanata Centrum...there is a Holiday Inn on the north side by the Castlefrank offramp and a Country Suites on the south side of the 417 at the NW corner of Palladium.

I'm not aware of a Hampton in that area....what we really need is an Adequate 8:banana: :jester:

Drove past here a few times in the last week, and it's great to see that the building appears to be topped out, and the've got most of the fascia installed on the building, at least upto the 12th or 13th floor.

The Red Brick finish stands out from everything else visable from the highway...

I think this hotel looks 10x better than the Holiday Inn in Kanata. This one has much cleaner lines and better looking windows. The HI just looks really tacky....which I guess is OK considering its location in the Centrum :yuck:.

I know it's not quite finished, but doesn't the new hotel look kinda cheap? I'm not an architect, but frankly I think I could have designed a red brick box with green tinted windows too. Maybe a flashing neon "HOTEL" sign on the roof will complete the look.

I agree it's not great, but it least it seems they've used some quality materials considering it's a rather middle/low end hotel chain. I would take this any day over the Holiday Inn Select in Kanata:

Really? I like the design of the Holiday Inn in Kanata much more than this bland red block of nothing. You can at least tell it's a hotel. This new one looks like an office building. The one in Kanata is what 10 years old now and it still looks brand new, and modern.

Long-awaited Marriott to open in March

by Peter Kovessy, Published on February 28, 2012
Peter Kovessy RSS Feed

Ottawa's sixth-largest hotel is scheduled to finally open next month, more than three years after construction started on the 14-storey Coventry Road building.

The 395-room Courtyard by Marriott is attached to the existing 179-room Hampton Inn and Conference Centre, directly off Vanier Parkway.

Work on the new hotel tower appeared to be completed months ago, leaving several local hotel industry observers questioning the delay in opening its doors.

The property is owned by Ottawa-based Bona Building & Management Co., which has a reputation for avoiding debt financing and slowly constructing its projects as cash becomes available.

It's the builder behind a planned 10-storey office building further north on the Vanier Parkway, between Montreal Road and McArthur Avenue. Excavation began in 2010 but, as of earlier this month, workers are still focusing on the below-grade portions of the project.

Bona lists four apartment buildings on its website. The company also owns the three Place Vanier towers, which were built between 1957 and 1970 and range between 10 and 19 storeys, at Montreal Road and the Rideau River.

Bona officials generally do not speak to the media, and Hampton Inn general manager Franco Falcucci could not immediately be reached for comment on Tuesday.

The new Mariott is the largest hotel in Ottawa outside the downtown core, according to OBJ research files.

A press release noted guests will "have access to" 36,000 square feet of event and meeting space, which is the size of the existing facilities at the Hampton Inn and Conference Centre. Room rates start at the Marriott will start at $159 a night. The hotel is scheduled to open March 6.

The property has gradually been expanded over the past 12 years, starting with the Hampton Inn, followed by the conference centre and subsequent expansion to the meeting space.

One of the least impressive buildings built in awhile. It just yells early to mid nineties with the brick colour accented with white bricks, green glass, and a number of awkward and deviating setbacks, angles, and sight-lines. :yuck:
Edit: Also, the balconies, front entrance canopy, and street presence is also awful imo.

At least it's development and another large hotel with good facilities in the city; although it was particularly needed in the CDB or downtown in general.
