Calgary, Vancouver and Toronto are booming big time right now, and Edmonton and Ottawa aren't doing too bad either. Post some pictures of all the tower cranes in your city. I would definitely do it for my neighborhood (the beltline in Calgary), but I don't have a Camera.

I just walked by there last weekend! I love all the condo devlopment in Toronto, you guys made me extremely jealous! I want to see like 5 towers going up at once in a two block radius like some of the stuff over there.
I think we have only one luffing crane here in Calgary right now, on Torode's 8th and 8th site I believe.

I think the crane at Hotel Arts is a luffing crane.

Why are those all angled cranes?
I don't know. I can only fathom load carrying restrictions made the sites too confined for the more common horizontal boom (jib) cranes. If it wasn't for the screwball Europeans hoarding them and their price tag, these cranes specifically designed for tight urban enviorments would rule the downtown skies.

I think the crane at Hotel Arts is a luffing crane.
And a couple of the ones at the Bow are likely to be as well from what I recall (the 3 on the main tower I believe, the cultural centre was to have the horizontal boom ones)

Pictures of some cranes in Halifax..
Construction sites for four residential towers, December 2004. The crane in the background was for an extension to a hospital. The short brick building in front went up sometime around 2002-2003:
http://www.pbase.com/image/24420128/original.jpg
Another from August. They were building a pair of towers in the back plus a lowrise building and another tower in the foreground (I think the far crane has since been taken down):
http://www.pbase.com/halifaxphoto/image/82173488/original.jpg
Hopefully there will soon be a similar scene downtown involving United Gulf, a waterfront development, and another 19 storey residential tower.
hydro rising in the downtown... we got another 6 tower cranes around town in use... but thats out at the new water plant and floodway expansion...

The following four are of the Olympic Village construction precinct. There are now 8 tower cranes on the site.

Great shots so far guys, those Vancouver ones are really impressive. Is it possible for any one from Calgary to get up to Scotsman hill (or Scotchman, I'm not exactly sure what it's called) and get a shot of all the cranes in the beltline? at least when it stops snowing.

Well yes, but in TO you can actually see 4 or 5 towers rising into the air around you. Height being the big thing in that statement. If I stand in Vic Park I see arriva, Sasso, Vetro, Stampede Station, and Union Square. But I don't feel like I'm really "surrounded" by towers under construction like I was in Toronto!
Perhaps in about a year when you have arriva 44, Nuera, and Keynote rising into the air will it feel the same.

There are now 10 tower cranes at the Vancouver Olympic Village site plus one of those self-erecting Potain cranes.
Within a year the four towers of the Wall Centre / Playhouse project across the street from the Olympic Village should be under construction and this will probably use four more tower cranes. Realistically there will be another half a dozen in a one or two block radius. It is likely that the broader Southeast False Creek area will have in excess of 20 cranes within a couple square block area.

13 years for the SE line is a very optimistic estimate of course... mostly just a quick quip about how slow our line extensions are. I don't reall think we'll be seeing the line extension until at least 2025 with the kind of city councils we've been used to.

Anyone have any new pictures? Calgary has a few more cranes up now, maybe one of our camera happy forumers could snap some pictures?

While Calgary is sleeping, here's Montreal's contribution...
There are only about 7-8 cranes around the whole downtown area, so that's not where you would find tower crane panoramas.
Here is Nuns' Island, a super condoized island located southwest of downtown. Condo towers and Bell's new corporate centre are under construction there (October 21, 2007) :

Is Calgary able to beat that?
(Great image by Imre ! November 28, 2007)
The only one I know that will beat that is the Fort Hills Upgrader in Fort McMurray. It is rumoured that that project alone will be using 60 of such cranes.

This is a very impressive thread. It always blows me away when I go too visit Vancouver how many cranes are being used in the city. I understand that the Olympic village is a oddity and not usual but even without that the actual downtown core always blows me away with how many cranes are going.
The fact is the whole Metro Vancouver is booming! What is the actual number of cranes in all of Metro Vancouver?
If you look at Emporis right now there are 59 buildings being constructed in downtown Vancouver alone!
With Burnaby, Richmond, New West, Surrey, Coquitlam, North Van etc...... as well as skytrain construction the place is just booming! What about the bridges being built right now as well?
Has there ever been a busier time for construction and cranes in Vancouver?
