Nice pics. Good to have some more recent aerials. Gives a good perspective of the density of our DT core. I still wonder how any taller towers would mix in with the current stuff. Everything is just so level and built on a grade perspective. Who knows?....

What are those empty lots to the west of downtown? Anything going on with those?

Nov 4, 2007, 1:59 PM
^ yes, that's the LeBreton Flats development. there's already one 13 storey condo close to completion with more to come.

Ever notice how the new part of Wellington does not line up with the old one? It kind of bothers me but I think its because of a certain protected view axis that is centred on the Peace tower. It sort of explains why the Claridge condo building is behind it and the rest of it is supposed to remain flat, the War Museum fin being a deliberate exception.

But doesn't the National Archives Building block the Peace Tower from that direction?

I don't think it blocks the view unless you are right in front of it. The building is not very tall and the Peace Tower is on a hill.

Here's an aerial I took last July on my way to Europe. We departed runway 32 at YOW and turned northeast over Gatineau to intercept our course, resulting in a very decent view of the city.

Sorry for the watermark but you only need to be robbed once ...

That set of photos on flickr has some great shots along the Ottawa River from Lachute/Grenville area all the way up to North Bay....it keeps on going after that to Oshkosh, WI.....a lot of views I wasn't aware of and some great shots of Autoroute 50 under construction...the photos are from July 2008, so there must be progress on the Autoroute since then.

Now imagine all that waterfront turned into usable space...:slob:
I imagine the (really) old stone EB Eddy plant (bottom left) being turned into a Terminus for Wakefield and Buckingham/Papienauville Commuter trains,
the modern plant to the left of the bridge turned into a huge park,
the Waterfront to the Right of the bridge bulldozed and replaced with some flats and condos with a walk near the water,
A little park on the first presqu'île with a modern bridge crossing the water the next island where the Forestry museum will be built in (and around) the brick building on the water and a public place with some commerces on the rest of that island...

I'm just dreaming aloud, sorry.

But isn't that just the most wasted space in Ottawa? Waterfront... Downtown...
This place has serious value!

It's a nice idea. Reuse an industrial site for a industrialish (bonus points for new word!) Science & Tech museum.

The City of Gatineau had some ambitious concept sketches for that space, a great big plaza with a canal:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3181/4081840352_5ddc8f7359_o.jpg

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2564/4081081287_eed9e66074_b.jpg

You can see the clues for the museum of science and tech in this:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2745/4081081101_d964ef35b0_b.jpg

I'm not sure how they could narrow Taché to two lanes, seeing that it is a wide busy boulevard today. Underground maybe?. The concept behind thickening the block south of du Portage and expanding storefronts on the other side is a great idea though:

I think I have been to that exact spot. You take the promenade almost to the very end.. there is a parking lot on the south side with a trail that leads to a lookout with spectacular views. Hard to believe this was almost 4 years ago I took this with my point and shoot... I need to go back there with my nikon..
