As much as I like skyscrapers I think sometimes people on this forum jump too quickly on the idea that something taller is necessarily better and we need some 40 story building to bump our city up to the next level. I agree with that sentiment in time, but you don't want some 40-story monstrosity overtaking everything else it needs to be natural.
Looking at these pictures however, a good sized building with a nice decorative spire could really add something to our skyline. Parliament has nice caps, we need something similar on a 30ish story building

Which is why Stinsons' brainchild in Hamilton didn't work out. Would have stuck out like a sore thumb. Hell, even the developer of our tallest (Landmark Place) thought so.

A big improvement to Ottawa's skyline would be the demolition of Place de Ville's Tower C (that's the hideous brown box that dominates the western edge of downtown). It's only 29 storeys, yet it's bulk and ugliness is hard to miss from many vantage points, especially looking east from the parkway.
Once levelled, replace Tower C with a truly landmark building that would complement the Peace Tower rather than competes with it.

I would LOVE to get the picture in the first post done up as a large print. As many quirks as this city has, I've always been proud to call Ottawa home and would place that print somewhere in my home in a heartbeat. I've tried searching for a super-size version to no avail. I may have to take a Camera out at night and try and replicate it if the search remains fruitless...

Thanks for the compliment! It was taken from the 7th floor (which i actually the 6th floor) of the new Canal Building. So Luker was bang on with his guess. I can gladly take some more photos from this location, and next time I go up Dunton Tower, there is a nice view from up there as well.

Before the trees all got their leaves, you could see a lot more buildings and homes, but now that they are in full bloom, it definitely does look like a forest!
And the shot is taken from the apartment complex immediately east of Carlingwood Shopping Centre. It's my summer view :)

The brick building is the Lemieux island water purification plant. I took the photo from the eastern tip of Bate island — actually the river is so low you can walk out pretty far from the regular shore. From this angle and distance, the depth of field melds the buildings together, but I particularly like the way the spires and copper roofs are dominant and the crystal hall of the National Gallery looks like it's on the other side. Someone with a better camera should go out there and take a nicer shot.

If a picture is taken of the Ottawa skyline from the Parc des Portageurs, just west of the old Eddy Building where the bicycle path to Aylmer starts and the old portage path still is, all that is seen west of the Parliament Hill precinct is a massive wall of tall buildings, all about the same height and with no particular interesting features. Not very inspiring.
Lets hope that the Cathedral Hill project will add some values in front of that wall of buildings. It's not postcard pretty.

Great shot Kitch, lots of activity down at that end of CBD this year. Next year it will be the West side with a bunch of cranes (Lebreton, Bayview, Gotham....).

This might not be considered "sweet", but it's the downtown skyline from Hintonburg. You can see the cranes for Cathedral Hill, Tribeca, Soho Lisgar; and in between the buildings you can see Performance Court.
