Just trying to get a feel for what people on this forum do for a living/study in school/are interested in. I just want to see what the ratios are in terms of students:development industry:planners:architects:whatever is.

PS- does anyone know how to start a poll?

^There's a checkbox option below when you create the thread to post a poll and then you say how many options will be in the poll. When you post the thread you can then edit the titles to each of the poll options (as well as the poll question.)

You can give it a try to see how it works under the General/Forum Tests forum.

I am an Environmental Consultant. Personal intrest in design and renovations. I follow this forum to see how my neighborhood is developing to get an idea of my property value. I like the LRT talk, but do not care for the buses.

I am always looking for renderings of the new buildings coming to town, just to see how cool they look.

I know pretty much nil about any of the technical discussions here. I just know what I likes to see and live in.

I work in the building supplies, specifically retail in hardwood/engineered/laminate floors and most other wood interior applications.

Used to be in aviation(got my commercial license) so I'm down with the YYC & YEG threads as well. Took an interest in urban stuff once moving out of suburbia and into a place in The Bridges.

I am a project manager for a construction firm, specializing in the installation of building automation and mechanical systems in commerical / industrial buildings.

And I don't live in Calgary, but will cross post with impunity as these threads are becoming too city-centric

I don't do anything related to architecture or development. it's just a hobby of mine. I'm a project manager, and lived previously in Dubai, and the UK. During my time in Dubai, I started taking an interest in high rise buildings. Strangely enough these days, I don't like the direction Dubai is going at all. The forum has helped me look at things from different angles.

Finishing my degree in mechanical engineering at the U of C; from May '06 to August '07 I worked for a mechanical engineering consulting firm in Calgary (who shall remain nameless, but I'll give you a hint: I worked on Bow Valley College, the Roundup Centre expansion, Livingston Place, the second Crowfoot Business Centre building, Banker's Court and the Sheldon Chumir Centre, among others. Oh, and I filled in in a Jamieson Place meeting once. :P I mostly did tenant improvements though, in many buildings (Bow Valley Square, Fifth Avenue Place, 630 - 8th, Crowfoot Business Centre, Bankers Hall, Standard Life Bldg...)).

^^ Oh yeah, you planning to go back to ESA someday after you finish?

I uhh, work at the Marriott Hotel as a banquet server with an interest in architecture because of all the stuff going on in downtown. Love the tall, new modern and sustainable ideas we are finally waking up to. It builds my interest that much more. ;)
And there are those of you who know me pretty well thru the meetups/shitface events. You know what I mean... (:D

Im also a student pilot ohh so close to get my Private Pilot License, but have been hampered with bad luck since October so lotsa no flying past few weeks. But studying currently for flight test hopefully before end of year.
I also a bigtime photographer specializing in Aviation. I am probably the most prominent photographer representing YYC so obviously planes and airport are of great interest as well as girls such as various tub tarts in nightclubs.
I have photos on both airliners and jetphotos.net and covered major events like 9-11, G8 summit, and Boeing 787 rollout.

My background is in Journalism/Graphic Design/Publishing although I'm biding my time as a delivery driver while living in Vancouver.

I first came to the forum to find out all the latest happenings going on in Calgary plus I have an interest in historic buildings and the preservation of such. This forum has been an excellent (read: the best) source of info on all things development or otherwise in the city.

I have been living in Vancouver since July of this year but I know I will be back in Cowtown one day again soon. I just needed a break from being in one spot my whole life.

Oh and I enjoy photography as a hobby and I'm a self proclaimed music nerd/snob/geek/former dj...

Something funny from a few weeks ago. My coworkers and I were out having lunch and the waitress asked if we were 'IT guys'. We weren't discussing IT stuff at all, but she said she guessed it, because we are all wearing Kakhi pants, and had ordered iced tea for drinks. Go figure.

Women pick up on the IT image like magic. With me, it's this: live in Calgary, skinny white guy in glasses = either IT or accounting.

And I don't dress anywhere near good enough to be an accountant.

I'm currently a student in Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering at the University of New Brunswick. I've done surveying work for a few summers, at first in the oil and gas sector, then a couple of summers doing municipal and subdivision work, then again in oil and gas which is where I'll stick for a bit I think. Ever see a one ton truck with a deck and two quads on the back? 9 times out of 10, that's us oil and gas surveyors.

After school, I'll work toward my commission as an Alberta Land Surveyor. If the oil and gas sector in western Canada dries up, I'll move back into municipal work if there's some interesting work available, or work offshore doing hydrographic surveys and ocean mapping.

As for my interest in these boards, I used to play Sim City a lot and find a lot of aspects of urban planning interesting. I am also very interested in public transit, especially rail transit and LRT. I actually found these boards by way of the Calgary Transit thread.

Hey I have an unrelated question for the IT guys.
My internet is not working on my home computer for some strange reason.
I had thrown away my old internet CAT5 cable over a month ago and just recently bought a new one to hook up my computer again.
Something like this should be pretty obvious that once I reconnect my network cable, I should have internet working, but for some dumb f-cking reason its not working. During the month I didn't do anything like changing my network properties and such.

I am however getting packet feeds but I am sending out way more data but receiving very little. My ipconfig says cg.shawcable.net as my provider so some type of link is working.

I wonder if any of you guys can help me troubleshoot this issue. I want to get my internet and inbox working again and I find it hard to believe that just because I disconnected my old cable and put in a new one 1 month later, it just screws up!

Im tired of relying on work computer or that in the library... :(

Thought so, yup it's time for new wheels, cass and chain for sure. So what are you thinking? Zipps, Kysriums or Eastons?

:slob: Yah, mavic makes a nice wheelset these days. I had a set of Ksyriums the year before last for a bit and they rode like greased lightning. I've been slacking a bit on the biking for the last year though, and now that it's cold and snowy, the bikes are stored away till spring. I wish we had an indoor velodrome in this city with a decent bank on it.

I suppose I could hint at what I do, etc. You name it, I've probably had some association with it, any kind of trade, technical/office stuff, eccentric service industries, project management. I used to work in the IT department at a law firm (go figure, eh?(network admin)), and at one point strongly wanted to be an architect, but the shine wore off of that pretty quickly when I decided that the personal sacrifices I would have to make in order to be satisfied with what was built under my name were too great. I may be pulled back in that direction because of my interest in furthering self-sustaining structures. I think it's either that, or a physics degree, a nice girl and some rugrats, and a lot more coffee.

Right now I mostly get paid to watch other people do things, and feel completely under-utilised. The rest of the time I do a little jig with project managers, subtrades, and others to get the logistics all sorted out so we can get things done. It's comfortable and pays well, but is incredibly boring.

Well I graduated from the U 0f C in 2003 with my Communications degree in PR, with a focus on Latin American Studies and a minor in English. In 2006 I completed my B. Education degree from the University of Victoria.

Technically, I should be a language arts/Social Studies teacher, but I have put that pursuit on the backburner for the time being. I am a substitute teacher with the Calgary Seperate School District teaching once or twice a week.

Full time I am in Sales with a developer, specifically working on the Canvas at Millrise condos. I have previous experience in sales with Resiance on the Garrison Green and Southcentre projects.

I stumbled upon this board as a useful means of learning more on what is going on in the condo industry and beyond. I find that that the opinions and information provided here to be very valuable.
