this tower is freaking phenomenal, it and 1WTC to me are the two best looking towers under construction right now. Bravo London! I'm jealous it isn't near me and therefore i can't gawk at it:)

it's indeed a beautiful tower. Btw I wonder where does the the 87 floors figure come from? CTBUH (http://buildingdb.ctbuh.org/building.php?building_id=451) says this tower's got 72 floors. This means that the CTBUH is not counting the "floors" in the spire.
Figures
Height: Architectural 305.8 meter / 1003 feet
Height: Occupied 243.8 meter / 800 feet
Height: To Tip 305.8 meter / 1003 feet
Height: Observatory 243.8 meter / 800 feet
Floors Above Ground 72
Also, the final height is 1,003ft, not 1,017ft.

Insane picture!! Well done sir!
Though as much as I want to love this building, I am not a massive fan. Not so much with the building itself, but with its effect on the London skyline. It's far too big - makes it look like the 'ivory tower' with Big Brother watching over London.

I'm a huge fan of "The Shard", love it. But that troll of a neighbor, Guy's Tower, is sadly conceived. It's worst feature is that balcony at the top, if that's what it is. Maybe without the balcony, the tower would have merit. Now that the Shard has risen, Guy's Tower competes for space in a bad way.
Guy's is an abomination. There's good brutalism and this is not it. Ok, that's my rant and I've probably offended some. Again, the Shard is stunning.

The Tower of London versus the Shard: it takes dynamic changes of architecture to make London an ideal city
The capital doesn’t need any more skyscrapers, but we can’t afford to let it become a museum.
By Stephen Bayley
30 Nov 2011
What makes cities attractive is at any time an interesting question, but now that Unesco says London’s dynamic skyline compromises the “visual integrity” of the Tower of London, it is specially pertinent. So vile, Unesco says, is the looming presence of the Shard of London Bridge, as it inches heavenwards to its scary, pagan summit that the Tower’s precious heritage status may be withdrawn. Our regal crown jewels will be emasculated by developer’s steel and glass.
De-listing the Tower would mean a drop in tourism. Never mind that such a thing would bring huge and positive benefits to people actually living in London who have tired of the ugly detritus tourism brings, there are the rudiments of a debate emerging here. As if to confirm this, the sensitive and austere aesthetes on Westminster council have declared the 43-storey Doon Street development on the South Bank to be “cultural vandalism”.
This is because, in the lazy rhetoric of the nimby councillors, it “overshadows” Lambeth Palace. The language is revealing. Instead of “overshadow” you could say “provides an exciting contrast”. It seems like only yesterday when tall buildings were a sign of urban virility. Count the construction cranes to get an accurate index of economic health!...

cheers - one of the architects inspirations for the Shard apart from church spires were ships masts - which I didn't really understand until photographing the Shard from an area of the Thames that hs many boats docked with masts...

no the opposite is true, its actually gone up very quickly.

I guess in a Europe-kinda way it's quick. But 2 and a half years is a long time for something that's not really considered a superstructure anymore by today's standards. Also, doesn't 87 floors cramped into 1000 ft equate roughly to 11 and a half feet per floor?

from Waterloo Bridge
there are several other towers going up in that view but are not yet showing to any great degree on the skyline. 'The Pinnacle' will appear to be around the same height as the Shard (it's slightly shorter but on higher ground) will appear to the left of the Gherkin - you can see 3 small cranes gathered together in a gap.

Yea if it took 21/2 years that is just normal construction pace. For example the bank of america tower in atlanta is 317m and was completed in only 14 months, Now thats a quick finish. However this tower is so much more elegant and is revolutionary for london so its doesnt really matter how long it took Im just glad that it was built probably going to be one of my favorite towers of all time when finished,

I'm so happy to see my favorite city -sorry my fellow New Yorkers- becoming more vertical. As one of the dual financial capitals of the world, it needs and deserves more office space in the form of striking contemporary skyscrapers. After spending a summer there I was left scratching my head, pondering where this business/media/education/political capital puts all it's condos and offices.
