View Full Version : Sunset in Eureka, Sunrise in Arcata

Eureka and Arcata are two cities located on Humboldt Bay along the northern coast of California. They are surrounded by forests of redwood trees and logging historically was a primary industry in addition to mining and fishing. Climatically, the region sees lots of rain and is somewhat of a transition zone between California's mediterranean climate the that of the rainier Pacific Northwest. Arcata is also the location of Humboldt State University. The area has a reputation for appealing to "hippies" as was confirmed upon my visit this past September. :notacrook: I hope you enjoy my photos.

Eureka (pop 26,128)

Eureka has an interesting mix of architecture styles. Nothing too very modern, but, lots of historic buildings and homes with a very distinct San Francisco style in their design. There are also many remnants of the 40s, 50s, and 60s.

Arcata (pop 16,651)

http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/1503/arcata001yq3.jpg

I had very little time to explore Arcata and unfortunately did not get a chance to walk through the Humboldt State campus. My pictures were taken around Arcata's main plaza. Keep in mind this was about 7 am so the only people out and about were those who had probably spent the night in the park

Just south of Eureka is the town of Ferndale which is an amazingly preserved (and almost excessively "cute") Victorian village, often used a set for movies. I think the Victoriana up here is so well preserved because the NorCal coast has been largely bypassed by the Interstate Highway system and, as a consequence, by "progress" and also because most of the buildings are made of the native redwood--which lasts virtually forever. It got so nice in the first place because the heyday of these towns was the late 1800s when they were centers of the lumber industry (again, those redwoods--being sent to San Francisco, also for building Victorians).
