He's not an official mascot, but he's an official sidekick - which happens to be the first sidekick in Olympic history.

Nope, he's not for sale....but VANOC has said that if he proves to be popular, they will create merchandise for the little cute guy.

he's doing alright but nowhere as well as the other two.

it also has to do with that he's the Paralympic mascot, unlike Miga and Quatchi which are the Olympic mascots. Would you pay $25-30 to buy a Paralympic mascot? so there are slower sales for Sumi.

I demand equal status for Mukmuk!

I mean come on, he's the only "real" thing there? And you make him fake?

Olympic mascots for resale on eBay

Damian Inwood, The Province
Published: Tuesday, December 04, 2007

Vancouver 2010's commercial-rights cops are investigating eBay sales of Olympic mascots at higher- than-retail prices.

"Our commercial rights group monitors it quite closely on eBay, if they see anybody crossing the line," Caley Denton, 2010's vice-president of ticketing and consumer marketing , said yesterday.

The Province found B.C.-based eBay seller "Leopard Golden Girl" was auctioning off a 41-centimetre-high Quatchi stuffed toy, starting at $45 US, with a "buy it now" feature at $59.99.

The toy sells for $40 at the Bay department stores.

The eBay seller was claiming that "stores can't keep them in stock, no more shipments before Christmas, HBC online sold out."

Denton said that's not true, and added, "I'll definitely pass that on to our commercial rights people and have them look into it."

The Bay spokeswoman Neesha Hothi said the store still has Quatchi toys in stock selling for $30 and $40.

Last night, eBay featured 38 mascot items for sale, many at prices above those charged at the Bay.

Yesterday, Vancouver 2010 launched an online store, selling mascots and Games souvenirs including key rings, jewelry, bookmarks, coins and shot glasses.

Sumi shortage surprises Olympic mascot's retailers
Last Updated: Friday, December 14, 2007 | 4:08 PM ET
CBC News

If you are trying to find Sumi this holiday season, you may be out of luck.

Two weeks after the 2010 Olympic mascot went on sale, the stuffed toy has sold out on store shelves.

Sumi is an animal guardian spirit that is part-bear, part-thunderbird and wears an orca whale hat.

Ironically, the manufacturers thought it would be the least popular, and expected the other mascots Miga and Quatchi to be in more demand.

Bob MacKerricher, president of Northern Lights, the Burnaby-based firm that has the rights to produce the mascots, told CBC News that initial research showed kids seemed to prefer the other two mascots.

"Miga was female, Quatchi was male and we really didn't know what to expect with Sumi," said Mackerricker

So the manufacturer skewed the ratio of production to produce eight Quatchis for every six Micas and every three Sumis.

At the Bay department store in downtown Vancouver, director Bill Stanbury said Sumi has been the runaway favourite, and he thinks it's because the mascot has an interesting story.

"He's a little different than the other mascots. You look at him, and he has hands and he has feet and he's different, and you need to understand how that story evolved," said Stanbury.

The toys are sold at the Bay and Zellers stores. The manufacturer has said there will be no more Sumis available before January, but Stanbury said he has managed to get an emergency supply that should arrive in time for Christmas.

Sumi stuffed toys are still available online at the VANOC website where staff said they had about 400 in stock as of Thursday afternoon.

I'm surprised Sumi is doing so well after his lackluster performance on the first day of sales. I really like him though. He's a close second to Quatchi for me.

Tintinium, that would be funny if his hat became popular. I would probably get one myself. I wonder if they'll actually anticipate that and in fact make them for the Olympics. I think they'd be wise to. They'd make an awesome toque design.
