Downtown Berlin, Ontario (now Kitchener) when it was getting it's streetcars put in. Ironic how we're finally catching up to our own urbanity from 100 years ago, lol. I can't even recognize the town in these photos.

That's right, we used to have a streetcar a long long time ago. Here's the link.

Looking up King street in downtown Kitchener in 1965. Wow, I didn't know that TD building was so old. I wonder what that building was in front of it. I suppose it must've been demo'd.

In the following link, you'll see a picture of King Street in Kitchener, back in 1920. Can you figure out where exactly this is? I can't.

Thanks for that link to those historical pics in the Record. It's hard to imagine being able to walk across Hespeler in less than a minute. Or how about that pic of Waterloo in 1960? University and King was new turf. You can really see how much bigger Kitchener was than all the other towns too. Soooo many factories and so little parking....blew me away.

This city hall is very nice, and the architecture is good. It kind of reminds me of Montreal's city hall.

Nope. Know where market square is at King and Frederick streets? Well, you can thank the 1960s urban renewal mentality for it.

/\ I see. To bad. Mind you, they saw these buildings like we see these brutalist structures from the late-60s now, so it's easy to see where they are coming from at times.
Except Penn Station... that was beyond ignorant. I'm actually sad I'll never get to see it, but such is life.

Thanks for the great pics, Waterloo Investor. The horticultural society site became the Rockway Gardens, I believe as a Depression make-work project (my grandfather was employed building the rock garden) and the land around the old sewage treatment plant became the old section of Rockway Golf Course.
I had forgotten the old Kitchener Hotel across from the old City Hall Square (today's Market Square, which I am ashamed to admit I supported at the time). The (old) old Post Office building across Benton from the Kitchener Hotel is something else I haven't seen for a long time. My memory may be playing tricks on me, but I seem to recall that when they tore it down (hard to believe what K-town has bulldozed over the years!), the turret-tower on the corner fell into King Street, causing considerable excitement.
Apologies for all the above -- that's what happens when you are older than dirt :)

The "TD building" (originally Waterloo Trust) went up in '64, I think, and has aged quite gracefully. If I recall, the building in front of it (sort of across King from the new Shoppers Drug) was the Arcade Building - not much retail at street level, mostly offices. It came down for construction of the King Centre (now Manulife offices).

Lyric Theatre marquee Kitchener Ontario 1940's
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1112/1447701679_da48b2a007.jpg?v=0
IMDB says Mr Winkle Goes To War came out in 1944. The Awful Truth dates back to 1937, but this must have been a re-release.

The box office and marquee were up front, like any normal store front. You paid your money for the ticket and walked down this hall and up these marble stairs to the lobby to get your pop and popcorn or go up another set of stairs to the balcony. It was all very grand.

This pic is from the 40's. The Lyric wasn't just a movie house, it had vaudeville and other live performances of things like the local orchestra. It was a big room with a full stage.
By the time I first saw this place in the early 70's it was still quite impressive (especially to a little kid), although some of the ornamentation was long since gone.
Eventually a big 70 mm wide screen was put in. The last thing they played in the late 80's was Lawrence of Arabia in 70 mm with stereo. The way that movie was meant to be seen.
The Lyric later became a large nightclub with the same name, it is now demolished and an empty lot, which is now part of a larger area called Centre Block and awaiting renewal and redevelopment.
The Lyric was the nicest of the bunch. I recall many a Saturday afternoon there, or at the Odeon, the Capitol, or the Fox, now all sadly gone (but not forgotten).:(

In that overhead shot of Seagram's, when did the Waterloo train station go in? Is it an original building, or was it put in a few years ago?

I see this article makes clear that the Walper is not responsible for the "jog" in Queen where it crosses King, as is sometimes suggested. My understanding has always been that that quirk in the downtown layout goes back to the original farm roads that met King Street at two slightly different spots.
