I have to say, the city seems to lack a coherent public relations strategy... this is like the third website since 2008 if I recall correctly.
Anyway, that and the budget aside, it looks generally nice and easy to navigate... might be a bit cluttered with the text, but I'll let that for more frequent users to decide.
As for Surrey's website... let me just say that it was fine when it was launched, but now it feels like it needs some polishing. For example, the city services menu is way too long... the relevant parts of the website are obscured by a huge image and you have to scroll down to see the rest, no quick links to common requests, etc.
EDIT: I noticed that they've done something different this time that may add to the cost: instead of pages linking to certain departments of the city and what they do (and some of these sites have used the pre-2008 template layout), it's now one unified look and source of information with the details spread across various "topics of interest". This means that they essentially redid the whole site from scratch... none of the older pages appear to exist if at all.

City of Vancouver seriously considering closing part of Robson St.
Peter Meiszner, Global News : Wednesday, August 29, 2012 6:43 PM
The City of Vancouver is considering permanently closing Robson Street between Hornby and Howe.
The street has been closed for the past two summers and during the Olympics, something drivers and transit users are already used to.
“We have an opportunity to create an important new public plaza in the centre of the Downtown and have a timely opportunity to consider this option,” says Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson.
Now city staff wants to further study the permanent closure and consult with the Downtown Vancouver Business Association and Translink. A final report will be presented to council this fall.
The city recently installed Pop Rocks seating as a part of their VIVA Vancouver program. The pop-up seating will stay in place until September or as weather permits.

Robson should be made into a pedestrian street between Burrard and Granville. If between Hornby and Howe is closed, there is no use for the section between Burrard and Hornby. And with the re-development of the Sears/Nordstrom building there would also be a perfect chance to modify the parking entry to be only from/to Howe and thus free the section between Howe and Granville from car traffic.
Sure both Hornby and Howe would continue to run through this pedestrian street, but this would still offer enough car-free area for proper street culture (performances, events, art, more green...). I currently find Vancouver lacking badly in street culture as there are no proper car-free places for people to gather in Downtown. :(

Canadian Tire Site - PCI's plans for now is to move ahead with a single-level retail building with one tenant (lower end grocery chain is already a secured tenant).... The Grandview Woodlands planning process is still in process and the City will not process any other rezonings until adoption of the plan which is more than a year away. I guess a single level cru building does not need a rezoning and can be processed prior to the plan.
Source is from someone at PCI but of course these plans can change.
Millennium's plans as per above post will have to wait for the Grandview-Woodlands Plan adoption.

True, there's still a tonne of open space down there still. The Centre for Digital Media moved into their new building recently, with classes starting on Sept 4th, so that's one sign of life in the area.
"As of Monday, August 20th, we’ll be saying our final goodbyes to our current 577 Great Northern Way building and saying a big hello to the new Centre for Digital Media. The new building, which is located at 685 Great Northern Way is just a few steps east of our old building, represents a great leap forward in the history of the Centre for Digital Media."

In the rendering there is a row of large trees missing that stand between the White Spot parking lot (relocated house) and the large house on 13th. If I was part of the UDP, cutting down trees would trigger a fail from me. That's pure speculation though, and I'm pretty clueless about how the UDP works.

Someone else probably has more information than I do, but I'd assume that would be going up somewhere in the Kitsilano stretch of Burrard where there are already other auto dealerships (between Cornwall and West 4th).

Looks like a proposal has been submitted to the city regarding the Oakridge redevelopment. Once it's up on their site I'll create a thread for it and share the details. It's pretty impressive.

Good to hear! I love all of the mall redevelopment plans around the lower mainland. One by one, they will all go - which is why I'm so angry that Tsawwassen Mills is going through!

Pics by me today of that project at Burrard & 6th (Kits360?) - from the 6th Ave. side (not keen on the corrugated steel siding):

Revised proposal for 6361-6385 Cambie Street (northwest corner of 49th and Cambie): http://former.vancouver.ca/commsvcs/planning/rezoning/applications/6361cambie/index.htm
I'm not impressed. I feel the developer got lazy and cheaped out by changing the architect from Integra to GBL who designed the approved adjacent building to the north. Not surprisingly, the two buildings look the same. -_-
I liked the previous design from Integra better.

Probably due to the fact that the Integra proposal was rejected not once but twice by the UDP first in Jan (2-5) then the reworked proposal in Apr (0-9). The new firm passed 11-0 on the first try.

Thanks.
I like the new design better - they'll stand out as a pair and hopefully influence additional buildings in the area (rather than more traditional looking lowrises like on Oak St.)
The Integra design looked like the midrises built over at the Carling-OKeefe (Arbutus) lands 10-15 years ago.

500 West 12th Avenue
http://changingcitybook.files.wordpress.com/2012/10/plaza-500.jpg
The Plaza 500 Hotel across from City Square has been closed for a couple of years, and is part way through a makeover to turn it into the Hotel Indigo, described as “an upscale boutique property (which) will offer luxury accommodations with spacious light filled guest rooms”. Perhaps not any more, as there’s a development application to convert the hotel into 106 rental apartments. There’s a recent similar conversion on Robson Street of the Pacific Palisades hotel, and the Coast Plaza on Denman Street has a similar conversion in its future.

Weird thing is that there aren't really any hotels outside the downtown core other than budget ones along Kingsway or near the airport. Nothing on the westside of Vancouver other than Granville Island Hotel and the Holiday Inn and Raamda (Park Hill?) on Broadway.

Really liking the feel of that little heritage building... fingers crossed for some great independent businesses to make it home.

Wasn't it considered for a brew pub at one point? I vaguely recall reading about that on this forum but the neighbours weren't interested. I feel like it'd be a wonderful building for a brew pub, but it's surrounded by too much residential to ever get off the ground.

Oakridge proposal is live on the City's site:
http://vancouver.ca/home-property-development/oakridge-redevelopment.aspx
I've only peaked at the rezoning app page so far - sounds impressive:
Henriquez Partners Architects has applied to the City of Vancouver to amend the existing CD-1 (Comprehensive Development) District By-law for 650 West 41st Avenue (Oakridge Centre). The proposed amendment would change the CD-1 (1) By-law to develop a 45-storey mixed-use development consisting of 110 889 m² of commercial, 39 418 m² of office, 4 181 m² of amenity, and 250 646 m² of residential, with a total floor space ratio (FSR) of 3.54. The proposal includes 2,818 units with a maximum height of 125.6 m (412 ft.), and 6,694 parking spaces.
Time to re-open the Oakridge thread (http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=200696)...
