The completion of the $142 million Lewistown Narrows project will mark the first time that travelers on U.S. Route 322 have four lanes open to them all the way from Harrisburg to Centre County, near Potters Mills.
State Transportation Secretary Allen D. Biehler was among those on hand to celebrate the near completion of the work done to widen a 10-mile stretch of the road from two to four lanes. Three of the highway's four lanes are now open, with the final westbound lane expected to open by the end of the year, according to PennDOT.
“For more than 30 years, engineers studied ways to build a modern, four-lane highway through the Lewistown Narrows,” Biehler said in a news release. “The Narrows presented some tough obstacles, but we worked together to overcome them and we are pleased to be opening this project ahead of schedule.”
The challenge posed was how to build a road through the narrow, seven-mile corridor between Shade Mountain and the Juniata River east of Lewistown. The answer involved building a mechanically stabilized earth wall that PennDOT and project engineers say is the longest in the United States, and building the westbound lanes substantially higher than the eastbound lanes.
The project was originally slated for completion in the fall of 2008. Now the last elements, including the Canal Park and boat access to the Juniata River, are expected to be finished in the spring.
