So, this is the next White House? :D

But seriously, nice shots. I've never seen DC from the angles and views you got from atop of the Washington Monument.

Man, DC is great. Awesome density. I didn't know you go up in the Washington Monument, I thought it was just a monument.

What an awesome set of pics, LSyd! DC is one of my favorite cities hands down, and I would move there in a heartbeat...I've always felt such a connection to it! It's the perfect blend of old and new IMO, and even though it is mostly low to mid-rise, it is still very stunning; even though I love skyscrapers, in many ways I would almost prefer this set up to something like NYC's.

There is some very nice architecture in this pic ;)

Cool.

IDing some of the non-obvious close-ups:

4: Curved roof is the headquarters of the World Bank / IMF.

5: Dome is St Matthews Cathedral. The large curved white building is the Hilton hotel - location of the Reagan assassination attempt.

6: Old Executive Office Building.

7: Islamic Center of Washington - a mosque.

8: The skyline in the distance is White Flint / North Bethesda.

9: Mormon Temple, in Kensington, MD.

...

13: Tower is the Old Post Office. The large building with the vertical windows is the FBI headquarters. The building with the curved roof is the Verizon Center.

14: The red brick building is the National Building Musuem - a museum of architecture and city planning.

...

16: Behind the Capitol to the left is the Supreme Court. To the right is the Library of Congress. The curved building in the middle ground is RFK Stadium.

17: Union Station.

18-19: Federal office buildings.

20: Masonic Washington Monument, in Alexandria, VA.

...

23: Close up skyline is Rossly, VA. Skyline in distance is Tysons Corner, VA.

24: The large curved building in the upper left is the Watergate.

25: Skyline is Courthouse, VA. The Blue Ridge Mountains are in the distance.

26: Skyline is Ballston, VA (my building is visible in this picture).

27: Organization of American States.

...

29: Georgetown

30: Rosslyn with Tysons Corner again.

...

34: The skyline on the left horizon is Bethesda, MD. Skyline on the right is White Flint, MD. Inbetween them way in the distance you can see downtown Rockville, MD.

...

37: Willard Hotel

38: Shrine of the Immaculate Conception

...

40: Skyline in distance is Silver Spring, MD

...

102: The Mormon Temple again, but it's off I-495 (the Beltway), not I-95.

thanks y'all, especially cirrus for the info. an ex-gf said she thought it was a mormon temple way back in the day (but she wasn't 100% sure) so i had to ask again; to be sure.

a couple more questions:

in 40, there's an old high rise on the left that looks like it's twice as tall as the others. that was built in the 1890s and is like 23 stories, right? (i remember seeing something about it at the national building museum.) what's the building's name? it has me wanting to go back up the monument so i can zoom in on it.

36 is walter reed, right?

-

Cirrus
12-16-2007, 06:48 PM
36: Nope, although Walter Reed is a good guess. The ugly grey buildings towards the back and the steeple farthest to the right are part of the US Soldiers Home. The steeple that's centered is part of Howard University. The glassy blue building is Chidren's Hospital.

40: Correct, more or less. The building is called the Cairo. It opened in 1894 and is 164 feet tall, but with only 12 floors. The Cairo is the *direct* reason that Washington has a height limit. When it was built the locals went stark raving mad and lobbied congress for a height limit, which was passed in 1890. HERE (http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&cp=qgjrcc8kd5hq&style=o&lvl=2&tilt=-90&dir=0&alt=-1000&scene=169231&encType=1) is a close-up picture.

Great pics. I always felt that DC looks better in pictures than it feels in real life. Yes, it is big and it is dense, but somehow it misses the mark in terms of urbanity. Possibly that is because it is frequently so poorly maintained at street level. It is normal to find streets filled with huge potholes, uneven sidewalks, and garbage/litter strewn about and not picked up by business owners or street cleaners. There is no real urban shopping area with a concentration of world-class stores and boutiques. The malls are impressive but they don't really cut it. Also, it feels dangerous to be out on any but the busiest streets. I lived in DC (Cap. Hill and Woodley Park) for over ten years. During that time I travelled a lot in Europe. It was always such a let down to get back to the unsettling reality DC after time spent in London or Paris or Berlin. Ditto for a jaunt up to NY or Boston. At any rate I left DC 11years ago, so maybe it has gotten better in that time. I know that it has grown a lot and added a lot of new buildings.

Love D.C.!! Clearly one of the nation's most urbane cities. Although I have mixed feelings about the Virginia suburbs (i.e., Herndon, Reston, etc.) where my wife's family live. Perhaps the Dulles Corridor metro extension will help resolve some of my ambivalence, or at least expedite my pilgrimages to the centre.

i gotta totally disagree. it's no Paris or London but it's a great city too.
