I can't promise that this is a comprehensive update as there is too much going on to be complete. Most of these pics have been scattered through various threads on ssp, but I thought I would group the best of them together. They are all from November and December 2007

Hey thanks for having a look. There are only 2 cranes in this pic as I was too close to get all 3. I posted some Waterfront pics in the Calgary construction thread on Thursday and the 3 cranes are visible in some of those shots.

I didn't even know the south hospital was under construction yet! Stupid city changes too damn fast even for those of us who religiously read these forums. :D

And that "old Telus building" that Scotia McLeod is in now - that might possibly be my favourite old building in Calgary.

Nice overview of Calgary, winter 2007.

Great pics. I can't wait to see how great the city looks once a lot of this construction wraps up and the new buildings, communities, in fills, and trees being to mature and become part of the city.

Personally, I think both are some of the nicest buildings Calgary has built in a long time. Then again, most people in this province prefer a brown stucco shitbox, so what do i know.

I believe ACH won the Calgary Urban Initiative's inaugral architecture award (or whatever its called) that was voted on by the public.

I just added the second picture of ACH tonight because I didn't think the first picture showed what the hospital really looks like. It looks like the building put too much red lipstick on around the windows! Overall, I think it is a really fun bright addition to Alberta architecture.
Thanks for having another look!

I love the childrens hospital. And alot of people are forgetting that that specific hospital is suppossed to be a child friendly environment. It's supposed to look non-threatening inthe eyes of a child, which by the way i think it has accomplished quite nicely.

Does anyone know why they only tore down half of the Col. Belcher hospital and left the other half standing? They should of just tore down the entire complex and rebuilt everthing new.

The western half of the Belcher was going to become a pair of residential towers, at least that was the plan a few years ago.

Do you mean the court house? It was designed post 9/11 and is built to withstand the impact of a 747 hitting it, so they used massive amounts of concrete.

What? What does Saudi Arabia have to do with this photo thread?
Saudi Arabia doesn't even know Alberta or Canada exists, but if they did know about us, they wouldn't be jealous of our oil but of our democracy, human rights, freedom of religion, and high level of civilization. I know it is wrong of us to be so liberal, but we do let our women drive and vote.

Excellent photos Living. Great job as always.

Thanks Surreal, and thanks for telling me about SSP so I could start posting pics here! You probably don't remember me, but last spring you ran into me at the Vic Park school as we were both taking pictures of arriva and you told me then about SSP.com. I lurked for a few months before figuring out how to post pictures.
I hope you had a good Christmas and happy skyscraper snapping in 2008!

Living for the city...

Thanks for the photos. I will have to send the one of Peter Lougheed Centre to our project team back in Toronto. It will make for a nice Holiday + New Year E-card.

Cheers.

I'm not the architect. I'm an intern working as site contract admin for the local firm working on the project.

Thanks for the reply. I've run into many forumers who tend to be sarcastic so in lieu of your comment I retract my previous commets. Cheers.

In the spirit of the season I am happy to agree 100% with CW on this one.

Couldnt agree more, about time Albertans step out of their bland colour schemes.

It reminds me of HUNDERTWASSER the Austrian architect who uses off square angles and funky materials and colors - check some of his work out on google, not for everyone but neat (or at least different).

Lol! I do remeber. I'm glad to see that you signed on Living, your pictures have been a real gift to the group.

2008 is going to be a great year for snapping shots. There is so much going on, it'll be hard to keep up.

Here are some pics downtown from different angles. Im sorry for the poor quality, the windows were dirty and the sun was at a bad angle. The courts shot doesnt do it justice, but when you look down the alley at it, its amazing since the 2 sections are connected by an open glass canopy:

The Calgary courts looking east down the alley:

I have been to Vienna and seen his buildings, they are great in a quirky way. His municipal recycling centre in Vienna is like the Calgary Tower on acid. His subsidized housing complex in Vienna is well worth seeing (only on the outside as real people live there).

:previous: I thought I was just looking at pictures of Euro Disney or something! I had no idea there was something like that in Vienna, I have to travel more of Europe one of these days. Very cool stuff!

I think Calgary could learn from Vienna.

I lived in Vienna for a year while going to school, they were once the epicenter of European architecture during the Baroque era, so its amazing how they accept such radical designs and buildings to co-exist with old classical designs.

I love the tower, although its called a recycling center, the main purpose is to incinerate garbage, you dont ever see smoke come out the top though.

4th dimension, very cool...I see a black hole or some kind of worm hole (Sliders) in the bottom right corner.

Hundertwasser, not something you see everyday...not here anyways.

the worm hole would be an entrance into the building courtyard...
