This is an excellent set. Obviously the River Walk and everything in it's vicinity get plenty of attention on this forum, so it's nice to see some other areas for a change.

Nice setting for city. The hills would be greener in the spring, early summer, and fall, but still look nice. I can't help but notice the billboards. Unfortunately, they seem to exist all over the country. Hmmm...I may start a thread in City Discussions regarding billboards. But back on topic, thanks for a great set. I should visit S.A. more often, considering it's only 85 miles from Austin.

Great pictures Boquillas. I always appreciate your photos of San Antonio! Thanks. I for one like to see the areas outside of downtown, especially the suburban highrises and skylines.

Excellent shot of the Emily Morgan.

So that's the medical center? Where is the Wurzbach Tower? Those hills are pretty intense by the way.

And probably my favorite building in San Antonio, the Tower Life Building, but man, I didn't realize the roof/attic area was in that bad of shape.

Beautiful. I miss San Antonio. I don't however miss the daily commute to and from the Medical Center.

I used to make the same daily commute to the medical center, when i lived near De Zevala and I 10.. Though i tried to learn the surface streets as much as possible in order to stay off of I 10 during commute hours.

Nice job with the photos Boquillas..

I like the bridge shot, 3 or 4 of the towers downtown are decent and there are a few really nice street shots.

Nothing personal, but overall that is easily the fugliest city I have ever seen.
Ever.

The downtown is small, drab, tan and the towers are architecturally unappealing in almost every way. And immediately outside of the small downtown the photos look like the ugliest of suburbs. Are there any dense neighborhoods in the city outside of downtown? Everything looks like it was built in the 70's.

Just my opinion, SA looks a bit better from ground level and within a block of the River-swamp thing. But it's hard for me to believe that this city has 2mm residents.

There are some forumers who pop up routinely and throw out blanket insults. I don't think you all are really interested in architecture or cities; in my opinion your purpose is simply to harrass.

Thanks, everyone. Kevin, in the photos I think Wurzbach Tower is behind either Methodist or University Hospital, which are both on higher ground than the Wurzbach Tower. It's situated near the bottom of "Pill Hill" and isn't as visible from the tower as the the more southeastern hospitals.

In this pic taken from around Crownridge, the WT is on the far right, and the next higher buildings are University Hospital two buildings to the left, and Methodist, second from the far left. Both obscure WT from downtown.

This shot is from Helotes, and you can see that Methodist and University are both taller than WT, because they are higher on the hill.

Really nice... Never been there, but based on pictures, San Antonio seems to have a very unique vibe to it. It looks like a very interesting place to check out. I would like to visit some day.

True Harbinger320: The US/C picture forum is fair territory for analysis and criticism about cities.

I've been to SA though it was a long time ago. Love the pictures.

The Riverwalk is utter perfection. If anything, sometimes the walkways get a little narrow given the number of people there.

I like the historic highrises.

And yes, SA does look small given its metro population. Its downtown is better and more interesting than some cities', but it's definitely not big. The city seems very low density, though some neighborhoods look nice.

Boquillas, you have really put together a nice set of photos. I always enjoy visiting San Antonio. I took off for a weekend to stay in the Drury Plaza Hotel back in June and really enjoyed my visit. The pictures are really great and it is nice to see the Hyatt topped out.

As for the hills, they make some really nice bicycle riding in the areas north and west of the city.

WOW! AWESOME thread! The best SA thread I've ever seen. I was hoping for some pictures of the USAA HQ, though. I will go and visit it myself someday. My partner and I work for USAA in Sacramento! Interestingly, the the USAA HQ is the largest commercial building in the United States (second only to the Pentagon overall). So, that's kind of cool! USAA is also the biggest employer in SA, also. Anyway, the thread was great even without the USAA HQ. Thank you for sharing! :)

I used to work at USAA in San Antonio but now in Phoenix. My understanding is that the San Antonio USAA campus has more square footage than the Pentagon.

Tuscon? In what way? The only comparison between the two would be the summer heat. Other than that, San Antonio is a very green city (though the grass and trees turn brown during the winter) with the hill country to the northwest and various hilly terrain scattered around town (Highland Hills and Pecan Valley on the southeast side one example).

San Antonio and Tucson are somewhat similar climate wise. Lots of heat and generally mild sunny winters. But as someone posted, San Antonio is much greener, gets way more rainfall, and is much more humid than AZ. Also, I'm sure the Mts around Tucson are quite a bit bigger than the hills around SA, just a guess.

Nice! The best SA thread I've seen I think.

Just a quick though, and nothing against SA at all, but why would anyone want to live in this? Isn't it kind of the worst of both (urban and suburban) worlds? Not only do you have very little space, but you're out in no-man's land in the middle of sprawl. What's the point of towers like this? If it's not an old-folks home, then why?

It's close to 410 as well as the 410 and San Pedro Intersection.

KevinFromTexas

San Pedro is a major artery in San Antonio that runs into downtown from Loop 410. It's lined with several high rises.

Boquillas
12-30-2007, 04:52 PM
Actually, this one isn't that close to San Pedro, being to the west of Jackson Keller, but I think the developer thought there would be more vertical residential development spillover from the San Pedro area here and it never came. Also, my two photos make it look much more isolated than it is, but it is definitely squat in the middle of a low rise, single family home neighborhood. San Pedro and 410 (as well as the Callaghan/410/I-10 area) is the closest thing San Antonio has to a dense commercial business district, and it's just not dense enough. But, if the remaining car dealerships and ancient strip centers are replaced with office buildings, it wouldn't be unreasonable to call this the CBD of SA. Hell, if you put all of the midrises strung out along 410, I-10 and 281 North all together in a cluster... they'd still be midrises :(

I want great things for SA, as do a lot of San Antonians, but the city leadership has been in the pocket of a few historically rich families for years, and things are slow to change. That being said, San Antonio's character is in its people, its older neighborhoods, its love of the humble and handmade (especially when it comes to food). The sprawl that surrounds it is so much like the rest of the country that I fail to understand how it can all be redeemed by a few shinier, taller towers downtown. I guess that's important on this forum, but it should never be used to judge the character of the people of a city.

I guess my point was why would you live in a high-rise if you still had to get into a car and drive fifteen minutes through traffic to get a jug of milk? Anyway, I don't want to distract from the photos with this discussion. It was just something that has always made me wonder.

There are some beautiful areas with some incredibly dramatic views on the North And Northwest sides of the city. I helped some friends move into an apartment on W. Bitters near Blanco in the North Central part of the city and I was stunned by the view from their balcony. It gets even better just outside of the city. I-10 from Boerne to Junction is one of the most beautiful stretches of highway in Texas.

The aerial views were my favorite, and downtown looks ageless as ever. But it has to be said that the view of I-10's billboard effluvia is personally very upsetting. What an awful way to frame the beauty of the hill country.

I love all the historic buildings in downtown San Antonio and was very happy to see them all still standing unlike the other major cities in Texas. Those glass towers in Houston and Dallas sit where some beautiful older buildings once stood in their downtown areas. I need to visit San Antonio again as when I was there it was for Fiesta and my rental car was stuck in a garage due to the festivities. I stayed at the little red hotel just off the Riverwalk with the McDonald's below it, you have several shots of it. I didn't know that your Fiesta was in the top ten for it size of celebrations in the world. It was fun, but overwhelming for a first time visit. I had fun but will have to go back when your population does not multiply itself by 8 as everything was jam packed. :) Being the 7th largest city in the country, it is surprising that more development has not occurred but I it was also nice to see all the old and wonderful buildings still erect. Thank you for the post and I look forward to more of San Antonio!

Great pics again. And I was just adding a few buildings to San Antonio's page at Emporis. It's amazing, some of the buildings there are nearly 300 years old. The Alamo was built in 1762. San Fernando Cathedral also in downtown, was built in 1755. Work began on that in 1738, and planning in 1731. Several of the other missions date back to the early 1700s. One even had been planned as far back as 1691. It's just amazing that the city is that old. Quite impressive when you look at the rest of the state and how young it is. The Alamo is by far the oldest building I've ever set foot in.
