So with adding Fernbank, the area around the Bank and further north of the tech area and more expensions in Stittsville, Bridlewood, the small area west of Bridlewood, we could be looking at an area of near 200 000 when completed - there's already well over 100 000 if we count Stittsville and Kanata together.

With Barrhaven (and the newer areas south of the Jock), Riverside South, Leitrim and Manotick, this may be another 200 000 there (with at least 100 000 for Barrhaven alone).

Similar for Orleans after adding all of Mer Bleue, the second half of Avalon and the South Chapel Hill.

In the very range, there may be more people in the suburbs then in the core of Ottawa.

And THAT is a very serious problem...

I think you mean more people outside the Greenbelt then inside it.

The old city of Ottawa had fewer people then the municipalities that joined it during amalgamation.

Anyone have any clue what is going on with the Rideau Street Urban Design Study? It was supposed to have started months ago but I haven't heard anything come out of it yet... it doesn't even have a page on the City website...

Is it different from the Uptown Rideau CDP?

http://www.ottawa.ca/residents/planning/community_plans/completed/rideau/index_en.html

Yes, the Uptown Rideau Plan covered from King Edward east, this one covers from King Edward west.

Terms of reference are here: http://ottawa.ca/calendar/ottawa/citycouncil/occ/2007/04-11/pec/ACS2007-PTE-POL-0013.htm

Goals of the study:
§ Investigate the origin and factors contributing to social problems impacting on the street and its environs.

§ Determine the priorities for the use of the street
§ Determine the capacity of the street to perform its functions.
§ Develop a vision for the design of the street and its environs in collaboration with stakeholders.
§ Create a Conceptual Streetscape Design, which includes any related modifications to the contiguous area as shown on the Study Area Map.
§ Produce an implementation strategy for the recommendations of the Community Improvement Plan.
§ King Edward Precinct Strategy - University

It's basically what came out of the move to remove the walls from the bus shelters along Rideau- they want to look at re-doing the whole streetscape.

It was also supposed to look at the Colonel By underpass (and hopefully recommend its removal).

Hmm that plan pretty much removes the current buffer zone between Stittsville and Kanata. Lets hope the development that goes there isn't as uninspiring as the housing on either side. It will also be funny having an industrial park running straight down the middle.

I'm guessing the 'mixed used' area along Hazeldean will be featured in the 'power centre development' thread, like the area on the north side

Community Development Plan (CDP), Old Ottawa South – Saturday, March 28th from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. – Main Hall, Old Firehall, Sunnyside Avenue. View POSTER (http://www.clivedoucet.com/news-events2009/oos_spring09-poster.pdf)

Over the past few years, it has become apparent that there is a desire building to have the community vision outlined in the 2003, Urban Design and Zoning Study revisited, and perhaps upgraded to a Community Design Plan or a Secondary Design Plan. There have been some meetings at the community level to discuss the pros and cons and to determine which direction the community will take. I will be hosting a community discussion at the Firehall on March 28th, and will bring representatives from the Old Ottawa East community to provide some insight from their perspective as their Community Design Plan nears completion later this spring. More details will be posted on my website closer to the date.

I oppose the plan for the following reasons:

1) There is no buffer zone around Notre-Dame-des-Champs, essentially turning it into a part of Orleans with no defined identity. I would protect at least 500m around the defined and planned village boundary - in all directions - and preserve that as rural/parkland. Likewise the same should be done for Navan. Navan Road should be realigned to run on the outer (i.e. Orleans) edge of the zone, maintaining a quiet 2-lane road through the village.

2) There is no plan at all for the area east of Mer Bleue Road, and a plan is needed since some of the area recommended for development should not be developed IMO.

for # 1... to the west there will be subdivisions on both sides of Navan road, which will function as an arterial road (with a 37.5m row). The road is to be widened to four lanes between Blackburn Hamlet Bypass and Mer Bleue. the phase 1 part of the CDP sees it as community spine. the area is designated for urban development, IMO it's too late to create that kind of buffer for non-environmental reasons. The part that's east of mer blue will still be in the village, but as you said it may feel like part of Orleans (but OTOH there are lots of old villages in the city that still have their own character like Ottawa East, Hintonberg)

Navan Road forms a spine running through the community. Over time this will become a busy arterial with key entry points into the developing community to the north and south. Future development along Navan Road must mark the gateways to and reflect the quality of the neighbourhoods on either side (see Figure 15). It is expected that existing individual uses will amalgamate and redevelop along the street as urban commercial, institutional, and residential uses and that adjacent development should make provisions for this eventuality. New built form should be turned to face and address the street with significant street presence.

for #2... part of that area is covered as part of the Mer Bleue CDP

http://www.ottawa.ca/calendar/ottawa/citycouncil/occ/2006/05-24/pec/ACS2006-PGM-APR-0115.htm

for the areas east of m.b. to the south of renaud it's still tbd as you alluded to depending on council next month... council could still decide not to approve the expansion. There are some studies about part of those lands on ottawa.ca (look under development applications and search for applications in Cumberland).

Here is my suggestion for the area between now and 2040 (Collector roads are just thoughts, revisable in final plans):

http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/3500/orleanssc.jpg

Black line - Notre-Dame-des-Champs boundary

Light yellow lines - Collector roads
Orange lines - Arterial roads (wider = 4+ lanes, narrower = 2 lanes)
Purple line - Transit corridor
Purple circles - Transit stations

Density definitions:

D1 = Low, semi-rural, unsuitable for transit (3 or fewer households/acre)
D2 = Medium-low, mostly single family/semi-detached (4 to 10)
D3 = Medium-high, mostly townhomes/small condos (11 to 20)
D4 = High, condos/dense townhouses (21 or more)
D5 = Very high, condo towers

I have had some brief experiences dealing with the Old Ottawa East Community Association and it doesn't surprise me that this CDP was supposed to be approved in the fall of 2007 and we are now at the fall of 2009.

Mid-Centretown Community Design Plan (http://ottawa.ca/residents/public_consult/mid_centretown_cdp/index_en.html)

The Community Planning and Urban Design Division of the Planning and Growth Management Department has launched the Centretown Community Design Plan (CDP) study.

This CDP is being undertaken in response to recent development proposals and a need to review and update the Centretown Secondary Plan in keeping with City of Ottawa Official Plan intensification policies as well as its compatibility and urban design objectives.

Study Area

The study area will primarily focus on the mid area of Centretown, bounded by Elgin Street on the east, the 417 on the south, Kent Street on the west and the Central Area boundary/Gloucester Street on the north. Much of the study area is included in the Centretown Heritage Conservation District.

http://ottawa.ca/residents/public_consult/mid_centretown_cdp/index_en-1.jpg (http://ottawa.ca/residents/public_consult/mid_centretown_cdp/centretown_cdp_en.pdf)

Study Goal
The goal of this study is to prepare a CDP for Mid-Centretown. The plan will provide a broad and integrated twenty-year vision and guidance for the future of the area.

Public Consultation
The planning process will be carried out in collaboration with the Centretown Community Association, the Bank Street Business Improvement Association (BIA), other community organizations in the area, residents, property owners, businesses, and with representation from Councillor Diane Holmes’ office.

Timing
The CDP is targeted for completion in March 2011.
