View Full Version : Portland Neighborhood Tour - Goose Hollow

Goose Hollow is a neighborhood just west of downtown Portland. It is bordered by Burnside St. to the north, the 405 freeway to the east, and the west hills to the south and west. The eastern portion is relatively flat, while the west is hilly. The housing consists of old turn-of-the-century homes, as well as small apartment buildings and some high-rise towers. Businesses line Burnside St., and there are a few restaurants and shops here and there in the interior of the neighborhood. Portland’s MAX light rail system runs through Goose Hollow, with 3 stops in the neighborhood, two of which serve PGE Park, home to Portland’s minor league baseball and soccer teams and to Portland State Univ. football.

The sidewalks aren’t crowded, but there is a healthy amount of pedestrian activity here, especially along the MAX line and the blocks near Burnside. If these pictures don’t show that, it’s only because it was cold and rainy, or because I’m generally a little hesitant about taking photos of people I don’t know.

Here’s a map…

Here’s the bridge that the above photo was taken from. The MAX goes into a tunnel under the hills just west of the bridge.

Looks great!

That looks like Portland's closest comparison to Seattle's Capitol Hill, minus the baseball stadium and rail. I've heard Hawthorne compared to Capitol Hill but to me Hawthorne is more like Wallingford.

There's just something about hills, and stairways in lieu of streets, and moss.

Man this really makes me miss living there. I used to live on King Ave. and my favorite building is the one on King and Burnside with the quarter-circle balconies. Love that neighborhood. Although it is a bummer walking down Burnside... too many cars and too narrow of a sidewalk. Great pics!

Hey, I can see my house from here. :) I live in the building about a block uphill from the Subway shop, with the maroon awning, along Burnside (photo #29-30). Love this neighborhood ... Burnside's a little in-your-face traffic-wise, but everything you need is within a few blocks around here. Thanks for the great photos, esp. the blurred MAX trains, always cool-looking. I really like the first shot overlooking the ball park to the Pearl District -- you capture these neighborhoods so well. Oh yeah, the two other Starbucks are the 24-hour one at Uptown Shopping Center, and a new-ish one next to the Civic condos, where Blockbuster used to be. Wouldn't want to go over 8 blocks without one of those...

Thank you so much for the Portland neighborhood thread that you are doing. The pics are fantastic.

I was born and raised in Portland, but have not been there in 30 years. I have a great deal of nostalgia for Portland, and looking at these pictures brings back some great memories.

I also would love to see the 23rd st. Lovejoy, Overton, Wallace Park areas done, as that is where I grew up.

Thanks again for the great photos, and the great memories.

What great photos of what appears to be a really cool neighborhood.

I was last in Portland abou 5 years ago and I walked all over that area and then down to where Powells is located. I had no idea of where I was, I just wandered around. Had a blast and as a stadium geek, I loved peeking into that Park!

I had the opportunity to walk that area when I visited Portland in 2005 and it was by far one of my favorite parts of the city. Kinda reminded me a bit of a cross between the Mt. Adams and Mt. Auburn neighborhoods in my hometown of Cincinnati with the houses straddling the hillside there.

And that bridge above the MAX line you posted is one helluva place for skyline pics if the sun's in the right place and the weather's cooperating.

If PGE Park isn't the coolest minor league venue in the world, I don't know what is. What is it about that Pacific-North West light? It just makes everything look so appealing and pleasant in photographs? (not that Portland needs the help.) Goose Hollow was pretty much the first place I went in Portland in September. Wicked little hood.
