These are all from late 2007, but I figured I'd hold off a little while and get my 2008 photography year started with some new stuff out of the Crescent City. This is my first photo thread in months and it's not as long as my usual stuff, but hope you guys enjoy nonetheless.

Photos taken in the CBD, French Quarter, Garden District, Uptown, Mid-City, and Lakefront.

I can't help but hear the theme from K-Ville in my head whenever I see shots of New Orleans now... dammit. Anyways, thanks for sharing your photos! That one street with all the palms reminds me a lot of California :)

Wow, a K-Ville fan outside of New Orleans? There's something I didn't expect! ;)

The street you're talking about is Canal, which is the center of the CBD, along with the hotel industry, high-end shopping, and mass transit in the city.

Gotta love New Orleans. There's alot of work to be done, but the city seems to be getting itself back together. The architecture in that city is amazing IMO, alot of history. I might not be alone in saying this, but in terms of the city's layout and density, I'd have to say this is the most "urban" major city in the south, with the exception of Miami.

You're not alone... I'd have to agree that New Orleans is the most "urban" major southern US city. It's a northern blue-collar industrial city in the belly of the Deep South, by way of the Caribbean. This northern US urbanity is not by accident as many wealthy northerners, well aware of the city's prized port location for commerce, played a major role in it's development from the War of 1812 onward (but especially since the 1850s). Northern money ruled New Orleans and is the reason that the city's occupation during the Civil War was a primary concern of the Union.

As for Miami... I consider Miami to be predominately a suburban-style city, not even close to New Orleans' urban fabric.

Beautiful photos. My girlfriend is from New Orleans and I've always loved our trips there. I'm in agreement that N.O. has some of the largest, continuous urban area in the South. I live in Atlanta now, and although the metro population is huge compared to N.O., it never quite achieves the same urban, "big city" feel (with the possible exception of a few scattered areas up and down Peachtree). New Orleans always feels like a little bit of a major northern city somehow got transplanted all the way down to Louisiana.

Not somehow... but for the very reasons I gave few responses ago. There are many books on this very topic, and any complete history of New Orleans informs of this Northern influence on the city. Many of the city's major institutions were founded by northerners.

I would like to hear some of your examples.

^ Let's just start with Tulane University and Medical School... founded by textile and real estate merchant Paul Tulane of New Jersey.

^^ Or how about the fact that even before the Louisiana Purchase, more than half of the city's businesses were owned by northern merchants from such places as New York, Baltimore, New Jersey, and Philadelphia.

I agree about Miami. No decent mass transit, it's neighborhoods are not walker friendly. Like most of South Florida, it was built to accommodate the automobile, and even at that it doesn't accommodate the auto very well.

^ Yeah, Miami's a mess. In the past ten years especially, traffic has gotten so unbearable for me, that it takes away all of the fun one is supposed to be having while on vacation there. I own a house near Brickell, but it still seems that I spend much of my day in my car even though I am centrally-located. It takes forever just to go 5 miles and unfortnately, as you said, the mass transit sucks (hopefully it will get better with the planned developments), and biking or walking are really not viable options in the city.

It's even reflected in the way people speak. The New Orleans accent sounds very similar to that of NYC with a few Southernisms mixed in. New Orleans got many of the same immigrant groups that the port cities of the Northeast got.

^ Absolutely. I believe I read that New Orleans was actually the first US city to receive a major influx of Italian immigrants.

Great shots. Never been to N.O but have always wanted to visit. If the crime wasn't so bad, I would consider moving there, but for now I will enjoy these great shots of the Crescent City. :)
