There are enough events, exhibits and talks about architecture, building and planning, etc. in Calgary that I figure it deserves a thread. When you know of something that fits the bill, please post it here.
I'll start...

Sunalta Area Redevelopment Plan Amendment
The City of Calgary has begun a program of land use planning studies for areas surrounding existing and future LRT stations. The first LRT station along the future West LRT line will be located in the community of Sunalta, along the Canadian Pacific Railway right-of-way, providing immediate access for the community. A planning study for this area is now underway.
The purpose of the study is to amend the existing Sunalta Area Redevelopment Plan (ARP) (1983) primarily focusing on the lands north of 12th Avenue SW. The ARP will be a strategic land use plan that will direct the right kind of development in the vicinity of the future LRT station, while at the same time managing development pressures in other areas. The ARP will be based on existing policies adopted by the City Council, the Transit Oriented Development (TOD) Guidelines (2004) and the Calgary Plan (1998).
The City is setting the stage to encourage new development that (1) respects and enhances the existing community and its best-loved features, (2) accommodates the change that is occurring and at the same time (3) fulfills Council's citywide strategic vision.
The City will be hosting the following event:

PERSPECTIVES ON ARCHITECTURE PUBLIC LECTURE SERIES
In Association with
The City of Calgary
Presents: Jan Gehl Gehl Architects, Copenhagen
Placemaking - Cities for People
Date: Tuesday, February 26, 2008
Time: 7:00 PM
Location: Stanford Perrot Theatre, Alberta College of Art & Design
Gehl Architects - Urban Quality Consultants is a consulting firm in the field of architecture, urban design and urban planning offering expertise concerning the human dimension in city and site planning. The character and vitality of public spaces are seen as an important key to urban quality. Their focus is on people and ensuring quality public space for people to enjoy. Accordingly, planning and design solutions are based on extensive research on how people use public space and experience urban quality throughout the world. They base their work on the close relationship between well-functioning, well-designed and lively public spaces and people’s perception of quality in cities. By allowing the aspirations for public life to drive the design process, the public realm can serve as a place for all, while embracing the unique qualities and amenities of the specific urban context.
Services provided by Gehl Architects vary from improvement of existing public spaces and urban regeneration of entire city centres to consulting in relation to the master planning of new mixed-use development, city districts and housing areas as well as with the master plan framework of new city areas. By focusing on improving the environment for pedestrians, cyclists, and other forms of alternative transport, Gehl Architects have been instrumental in promoting sustainable cities.
Jan's seminal book, Life Between Buildings, first published in 1971, continues to be a widely used handbook on the relationship between public spaces and the social life of cities. His 2006 book, "New City Life" is a handbook describing how to improve the quality of life in the city by responding to the challenges facing cities in the 21st century.

You are invited to attend a presentation
from one of the leading consultants
working with The City on TOD.
Urban Designer and Architect,
George Dark, of Urban Strategies(Toronto)
will be making a public
presentation on TOD: Wednesday
April 30, 7:30-9:00 pm at the Plaza
Theatre, 1133 Kensington Road NW.
This presentation is free and open to
the public.

www.calgary.ca/TODPlanning or
phone Ryan Hall 268-4698, Kevin
Barton 268-5927 or Angela Kiu 268-

====================================
I helped craft this presentation, which George gave at the NW LRT Station Area Planning Visioning Session. You'll notice lots of my pictures, and even some from other SSP forumers in there!
George is an amazing speaker, and the presentation was quite good so the City wanted him back to do another one for a wider audience.
