This is a thread to discuss Saskatchewan's history. Saskatchewan has been through boom and busts, right now it now it is undercredited(in my mind) for the history and historic buildings that are in our province.
So, if you want to post some of your city, town, or a ghost towns history, pr historic photos have fun and discuss it because its a big province out there:tup:
here are some old Saskatatoon photo's from an airplane at September 5th 1941. Photos from saskatoon Archvies.

The first railway bridge in Saskatoon was built in 1889-1890 where the Senator Sid Buckwold freeway bridge is now. It was destroyed by ice in 1904. This photo shows the new bridge on its temporary piers being washed out the following year. Spring breakup was a much-awaited and often calamitous event until the building of the Gardiner Dam upstream in the 1960s permanently altered the river's flow.

Great pictures, thanks for sharing!
I have a high resolution aerial image of downtown Regina c. 1964 (overhead, Google Earth style). I was actually going to upload it to urban regina tomorrow.
But for now, its time for bed!

Cool pictures!
One things hasn't changed much since those pictures were taken...Saskatoon's skyline. :D Juuuuust kidding.
That first picture is kind of cool, a small little city, yet 3 or 4 bridges.

I was at a friends house this evening and he happened to have a highschool yearbook from Mount Royal Collegiate 1983-1984.
As I began flipping through it, the following images caught my eye and had me thinking "what must have been on the minds of urban enthusiasts back in the day?".
The images speak for themselves, especially "Progress".

Whoa! Did Saskatoon ever have those three glass towers? :haha: ;) lol. Skyline would have been cool if there was though. The tower on the right kind of resembles the SGI in regina.

Are you referring to the one on the far right? The structure looks almost triangular, or maybe that's just shadowing.

Yes, the student likely made that him/herself. That's why it is shown in a school yearbook.
Is this really that hard to understand? :koko:

Like I said, I missed part of it. (edit...actually I guess I didn't...where does it state that it was an art assignment? It came from a yearbook yes...but I was wondering if there was something more to it than some kid just doing it up for fun/class.)
But man do you ever get rocked off your horse pretty easily. I apologize for affecting your life in such a negative way with that post. For your own safety, please stay away from prescription painkillers and twisted rope.

cool old regina photos. i always wondered what would have happened to regina if it wasn't hit by the tornado. Mabey it would be around calgary or winnipeg in size. but i guess it helped create what regina is today. The photos of the damage is really neat.

Also, the west river bank looks to be going under some modifications with the wide path cut into it.
And the U of S lands are just ripe for development, so ripe.

Wow, 21st Street back then... sucked. I would've expected there to be more buildings along it in a more or less continuous fashion. I guess the age of the automobile and surface parking lots had done its worst by then.
What's that large building in the bottom right at what I'm assuming sat on 20th Street and Spadina? Apartment building? Hotel? What happened!?!?!

Maybe, but the courthouse is on Spadina, directly across from the Bess. That building looks to be located on 20th street, across from the Radisson Hotel, I think it is currently a gravel parking lot serving anoffice building on the corner of Spadina and 20th Street.

I believe that's the old YMCA building, which met its demise sometime in the mid to late 1960's.

I'm thinking it is a colourized photo. They used to take black and white photos and paint over them with watercolors. That would also explain why the red church is grey as maybe they forgot to paint it. It would also explain why the coloring of the bessborough seems so weird.

Population predictions are ~ 11 years off (1986 they hit 180,000).
I believe the city of Regina was 150,000 or so in 1961. I was searching Stats Can, found some pop. data for Regina from 1961 to 1976...but, I forgot to save the page and now I am unable to find it :hell:

I recall fluctuation during the mid-late 1980s for Regina. They hit 180,000 in 1986, but lost a few thousand or were stable from there on until growth picked up again during the early 90s where they once again hit 180,000 (the city).
Thank you for retrieving those numbers.

No Problem. I have a few stats laying around as i had did some random population digging. Yeah if i tried to get every year that would take sometime, but yeah between those 5 years of census the population did fluctuate.

I would guess late 1960s or early 1970s, but don't quote me on that.
