Post pictures of spring 2008 in your city..
And yes I know Victoria (Vancouver..) isn't tropical, it's in Canada, we have winter, clouds, rain, and there are 317 different reason why Victoria sucks, so if we can just see your city's spring pictures and read your comments that would be great.

Manitoba Merv sees his shadow
FEB 02 2008 11:40 AM
According to Manitoba Merv spring is still about six weeks away.
The groundhog came out Saturday morning to make his forecast.
Jacques Bourgeois of Oak Hammock Marsh says there was a break in the clouds and Merv saw his shadow.
If a groundhog sees his shadow it suggests six more weeks of winter. If no shadow is seen, legend says spring will come early.

Balzac Billy predicts early spring
Jamie Komarnicki , Calgary Herald
Published: Saturday, February 02, 2008
Dirt flying through the air, Balzac Billy poked out from his burrow to deliver the good news - an early spring is at hand.
About 200 people were gathered at the hamlet of Balzac when the Prairie Prognosticator -- actually a man in a groundhog suit -- climbed out of his burrow at about 8:15 a.m.
His shadow was no where in sight.
"So the verdict is an early Spring. That is a good thing," said organizer Steve Neubauer.
That puts Billy's prediction in harmony with his eastern cousin, Shubenacadie Sam, who emerged from his pen Saturday at 7 a.m. ET to the sound of bagpipes and a town crier but no shadow, just rain and a crowd of around 50 people who began to celebrate the coming spring.
"It is raining cats and dogs and groundhogs and he did not see his shadow," said Sue Penney, spokeswoman for Shubenacadie Provincial Wildlife Park, which sits about 35 kilometres north of Halifax. "We are celebrating that winter will be over early."Because of Nova Scotia's time zone, Sam made the first groundhog prediction in Canada.
According to folklore, if a groundhog sees his shadow on Groundhog Day - Feb. 2, he'll go back to his burrow, predicting six more weeks of winter.
If he doesn't, there will be an early spring.
The belief that hibernating creatures can predict the arrival of spring was brought to North America by German immigrants in the 18th century.
Pennsylvania's Punxsutawney Phil, arguably the most famous of the furry prophets, had a divergent view on the length of the winter season after seeing his shadow during a ceremony on Gobbler's Knob, a wooded knoll just outside Punxsutawney at about 7:30 a.m. E.T. Saturday morning.
Some other furry forecasters include Wiarton Willie, the resident rodent in Wiarton, Ont., who is hailed as the dean of Canadian forecasters. Moose Jaw's Snewsie is not technically a groundhog, but a gopher, challenging the groundhogs' lock on winter predictions. Saskatchewan also has Watson Willow from Watson, Sask. Rounding out the Canadians is Manitoba's Merv in Oak Hammond Marsh, Man. There are also a couple of Chucks - Buckeye Chuck in Ohio and Staten Island Chuck, in New York State.

I suffer a bit of insomnia and often watch a Seattle network broadcast of my favourite piece of crap drama (NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX)... for the past couple of months the local affiliate regularly announces nothing but terror on the weather front (not just the higher elevations)... I can only describe as "Buffalo" style hyperbole about bad weather on its way.....
Is the weather in Seattle (the wind storms, the rain, the occasional winter storm) really that much worse than BC's lower mainland and Van island (where there is apparently no bad weather)?
Very curious given the Seattle area is south of the lower mainland/Vancouver.

Seattle's probably a little better than Vancouver.
Mostly it is a matter of perspective. Vancouver has a mild climate for Canada. Seattle is better than some places but not particularly mild for the US. What people think of the weather depends a lot on their experiences. If you move from Edmonton to Vancouver the winters will seem mild but if you're used to Phoenix conditions they won't.

What? This winter hasn't been bad at all. February is usually are coldest month of the year and so far it has barely dipped below 0. Plus there has been plenty of sunshine and a lot less rain than usual. In fact I can hardly remember the last time someone complained about the rain around here.

the weather is usually similiar but can be different
on a number of occasions they have gotten snow when we got nothing up here
i remember once going to Bellingham and it was fine up here but just north of Bellingham there was a huge storm and signs, trees fell over the I5 was covered in snow - and all the seattle TV stations were on location and we watched inside the Kmart on the TV - it was kinda surreal
in early january they had a tornado
in December they had huge flooding - the I5 was closed down for a number of days south of olympia
early november 2006 we drove back from california and the weather in the same area - just south of olympia was brutal - flooding, heavy rain - we had to pull over a few times just to defog and take a break from the rain
its also more hilly than here - so driving can be a nightmare down there in bad conditions
I also can remember leaving nanaimo - where there was 2 feet of snow to get to west vancouver and have it be green and snow free and no sign of snow and its not that far away

i remember around 1991 in February there was a sunny weekend and it reached +20c - it was a weird freak weekend
it was like summer for a few days - i think it was just after valentines day
i can remember the stories from the news cause they went to wreck beach where there was quite a lot of people soaking up the weird hot weather
than it got back to normal for february

it generally is warmer there but there is still freak weather that they get that we don't
the thing with Seattle TV though is they report on things that are 1-2 hours away from the city - like today they were reporting on the big snow in the pass - vancouver never reports whats going on in the coquihala pass for comparison - so it can be misleading if you are watching from outside the area
its been said in 50 years we will have portlands weather and portland will have san franciscos weather...
portland is really nice in the winter really - you can really notice a difference from here

Even though are winters are mildish...I can't even handle them anymore. I want Northern California winters at worst. Keep our summers the same, except have the nights not as cool, so you can walk around with a t-shirt on.
Mike, I heard a few people say it was snowing for a bit in some areas, but nothing close to town. I live about 2 km from downtown and so far this year we've only had a couple hours of snow, but it didn't even stick to the ground.

Is that true? I'm really surprised to hear that. I've been crunching over frozen puddles and rock-solid mud in Point Grey for many a night so far in 2008. I'd summarize the first few weeks of this year as "very icy." I took a pretty serious spill on the ice last week.

Hey Brett, awesome pictures!!
Are you still using that mighty little camera of yours? Love the forest pictures as well. Although Victoria is certainly no tropical paradise in the winter, it's amazing just how much difference being above zero will make.
Thanks for the Vancouver pics Overground, that makes two cities represented thus far, hopefully more to come soon!
As for the best summer... well, I really do like the summers in Victoria as to me a low 20's day (which is typical here) is just right...although I wish the evenings would be just a little warmer, but at least you can sleep at night.
I might give my vote to Edmonton for best summer... nice and toasty warm but not insanely hot like the interior of BC, and without the humidity of some of eastern cities, plus being further north the longer daylight hours in the evening. Plus you gotta love the big sky of the prairies.
Nicko999

I prefer when tempertures are around 30C. So my three cities for summer are like I said Toronto, Montreal and Winnipeg. Nothing better when it's 35C with humidity in a pool:yes:

And best summer? Toronto, Montreal, Winnipeg?
I like intense heat without the humidity, so I'd have to go with Kelowna or any other interior BC city. Montreal has a nice summer too.
Shanghai summers are awful. It can get up to 40c with 80%+ humidity.

The summers in the Far East are brutal just like giallo said. In Japan one year I had no access to an air conditioner in my flat, let alone a pool, and I was out in the boonies.....bug heaven. The only thing that saved me was the screens on my windows and a fan. The humidity was so thick that it would roll down the street like fog, similar to what you would see in those Vietnam war movies in the jungle. It was hell on earth. I'll take Van or Victoria summers please:)

And best summer? Toronto, Montreal, Winnipeg?
Winnipeg summers would be perfect if only we had the same relaxed attitude towards toplessness that Ontario has.

Winnipeg summers are perfect; blue skies, blooming golden canola feilds, the gentle breeze blowing gently through the trees...
The open feilds just seem to go on for ever but your attention is captured by the skies, which let you see on for miles. The eternaly sunny land of the prairies is only matched by the city of Winnipeg where the sky is always visible and does all to inspire...
Ah, Je retournerais mon amour, les prairies...

Great snaps! I love that Arbutus tree at the Empress and with the Belmont Building behind it makes for a great photo.

From last week, Morton Triangle where Beach Avenue meets Denman at English Bay. This park at the beachfront is the showcase for plants in the West End, from palms, banana, Castor oil plant, to the Polynesian Elephant-ear.
