Crystal Blu is getting up there so where's the glass. I'm curious if it will be actually blue or the green as some have mentioned. The strange glass crystals embedded in the limestone are blue.

but I invented that angle..

Since I took that shot, there three UT'ers have taken a photo from that exact spot on the esplanade.....

I must admit, it's a sweet angle to take a picture of MLS and Telus...

If you 'invented' that angle, you should have 'patented' it, that way whenever other photographers take pics from your 'invention', they'll have to pay you royalties... :frog:

Hey!!! i found another thread :)

Hey Guys... Here is the promised update for the Yorkville area... Went down there TODAY so these are fresh photos... This might be one of my last updates before school starts because I'll be busier :(... But I still will try to get some shots whenever possible... I promise to get you guys some updates of the Financial District are (ex. Trump, Ritz, etc...) later on this week or the next...

Enjoy :) - steveve

Here is a shot of Murano/College Park from the Varsity Stadium... This location has AMAZING views of the whole skyline... I totally recommend this spot for panoramic shots!!!!!! - it's very smoggy there a lot of the time though... So always check the whether...

Here is a shot of the financial district skyline also from the Varsity Standium... Look closely and you'll see the Ritz!!!

Here is One Bedford on Bloor... It's getting really tall...

**PS.. Exhibit (by Bazis) has a sign on a building right beside Museum House Condo... I guess they plan to demolish that Mcdonalds and other restaurants across from the ROM... so sad... And isn't Bazis screwed from 1 Bloor??? lol

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3477/3856431385_c33d69ce94_b.jpg

Here is BSN... it's almost done... Look closely in the bottom right corner and hey... There's X Condo!!!... (X condo is about 35 stories up already)

That's a retaining wall. It was my hope that they make it into an art piece for train passengers... or at least ad space.

I guess it's step one in eventually decking over the rail corridor.

Aug 29, 2009, 8:46 PM
That could be a long process. In the meantime maybe they should just cover it in adspace, or even just a wrap covered in Concord logos.

In my opinion this building is to large for that intersection... It towers over everything else in the area and it seems too close to street level... Just saying... (in my opinion)....

Nice shot of Casa...

I've always thought of Casa as a cheap looking building architecturally... Wrap-around balconies on every floor is older architecture and it's just a rectangle which makes it even worse.... It reminds me of the recently built Pulse Condos in North York City Centre which were an architectural disaster (in my opinion) as the wrap around balconies looked old.... But Casa being tall and slim (plus the cool roof) makes it look good in the skyline, but the glass only looks good weather-depending.... But it looks great in the skyline and thats all that matters...

Thats just in my opinion

Here is Pulse Condo's below in North York.. The architecture was old and boring, the glass turned out bad, everything went wrong in this one... And it was only built last year and it already looks like an old building with old design...

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3116/2680920087_8cce24298a_b.jpg

The point is I don't like this cheap-looking, old-school architecture...

Anyone else agree?...

Peace :)

**PS. I am not a Casa Hater... and what's the top floor of Casa (the one below the rooftop) gonna be used for???... Observation deck?... Facilities???.... Mechanical???

Here is where I disagree. From an esthetic perspective, perhaps. But from a functional perspective, and individual usable space, I love it. The whole smokers nook patio that is 4ftX4ft is pretty lame, and non-functional. Where as a larger patio like this creates an extension of the units into an outdoor living area. With appropriate patio furniture, plants, area rugs, etc. these usable spaces are a growing selling feature for high-density residential units. Check out the show suite for Clear Spirit in the Distillery District and you'll see what I mean. With the great weather we get for 4-5 months of the year, having individual space to enjoy it is always welcome.

The whole thing is Parade, and whats been constructed so far is only half of the the complex, the eastern half. The western half is kind of a mirror image except for the tall tower which will be round instead of square, and joined to the square tower (the part on the left in your pic) at the 26th floor I believe by a 2 floor high skybridge.

I never really liked Casa from this angle.... To me it looks really fat and chunky and architecturally "cheap" with all of those wrap around balconies...

But from a distance it looks pretty legit....

Yeah Cal, I've always thought that whenever I see that view (north east view)...

The skyline looks so different from that angle because there are little to no monumental toronto skyscrapers in that area... Also we don't see it a lot because it is more to the east... X Condo (and couture, if built) will hopefully change that and add some height to the area :)

Too bad it was a smoggy day... next time I'll get a better shot...

Funny because on the other side of the building (the one I took the shot of X from) you get this view... it's pretty much the opposite:

Here's a shot I took from the other side (south facing) of the condo tower a couple months ago:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3198/3560700910_6c2db69499_o.jpg

And here's the view to the North West... Again, totally different... It's the bloor/yorkville skyline:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3662/3560700748_3520cdd736_o.jpg

And here's a shot again of the North East view a couple months ago... Without X condo and I got Verve in the frame...:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3427/3392564814_d850fd0889_o.jpg

I'll definitely get some updated shots from these angles with 500 sherbourne right behind Tower Verve...

Man... Telus looks SO similar to the New York Times tower in NY...

The fins at the top of the building are so similar (except telus cladding and missing fins on east/west side).... But the spire (if built) will make it NY times towers little sibling ;)

BA is almost similar but not quite (only the little fins resemble it a bit)...

Lights, camera, construction at Festival Tower

September 12, 2009

Gale Beeby
Real Estate Editor

George Clooney and Clive Owen, Oprah Winfrey and Miranda Richardson. These are just some of the stars who will be gracing various red carpets around town during this year's Toronto International Film Festival.

And, if all things go as planned, next year TIFF will be welcoming the world's glitterati under one roof – the Bell Lightbox, the new home of what has become the world's most influential film festival.

Located in the heart of the city's entertainment precinct at King St. W. and John St., the Lightbox opening will no doubt be spotlighted during next year's festival and, when the cameras are turned off and the stars go home, some won't have far to travel.

That's because sitting atop the leading-edge theatre and movie complex is the Festival Tower, a 46-storey (153.6-metre) condominium where several Canadian celebrities,, including producer/director Ivan Reitman (Kindergarten Cop, Twins, Animal House, Ghostbusters), have purchased units.

Reitman is not only a condo owner, he was also the driving force behind the Lightbox/Festival Tower project. So expect to see him and his equally famous son Jason Reitman – nominated for a best director Oscar in 2008 for Juno – walking around the Festival Tower lobby.

Other celebrity purchasers are hush-hush, of course, but rumours are rampant that Donald Sutherland, who already owns a small waterfront condo in Toronto, Academy Award-winning director Norman Jewison, and funny man Dan Akroyd have, or will soon, buy a Festival Tower condo of their very own.

Talk about a building having star appeal. And the story behind the complex is worthy of a Hollywood script.

Ivan Reitman's parents, Clara and Leslie, postwar immigrants from Czechoslovakia, scrapped together enough money in the 1960s to buy the land at King St. W. and John St., first running a dry-cleaning business and then Farb's car wash at the site. When they retired, the site became a parking lot. After his parents died, Reitman and his sisters – Agi Mandel and Susan Michaels – wanted to honour them, so they donated the land to create a permanent home for TIFF.

The Daniels Corp., with John Daniels at the helm, was chosen to produce the project, for good reason. In 1975, Daniels supported the fledgling film festival – he being one of the festival's founding "angels."

Daniels is no stranger to big projects. The builder has created more than 18,000 homes and condos across the GTA, and the Daniels Corp. is the guiding light behind the revitalization of Regent Park.

There's no doubt the Lightbox/Festival Towers project will be the star of the Theatre District once it's completed. And the building is taking shape quite nicely, according to Tom Dutton, a senior vice-president with Daniels.

Being the permanent home of TIFF, the Lightbox will have lots of movie theatres, which will show films during the festival.

"There will be seven theatres in total: five festival theatres, one private theatre, and a theatre exclusively for condo residents," says Dutton.

The largest of the theatres will offer seating for 550 people and will feature old-fashioned balconies and loges. The theatres will have deep stages, so live performances, small orchestras or corporate events can be hosted in them as well.

Condo residents will also be treated to private screenings in their own 55-seat theatre each year during the festival. TIFF will also create a film program for residents that will run throughout the year, and there will be early access and special pricing to more than 100 festival events, and direct access to the festival for Tower residents.

The Tower's amenity space will be fit for Hollywood royalty.

The "Pool House" will be a glass pavilion overlooking a landscaped terrace, where residents can catch a few rays or enjoy lounging in one of the private cabanas. Located on the 11th floor, the pool will feature a cascading waterfall, which will separate it from the whirlpool.

Overlooking the pool, the sports centre will be furnished with the latest fitness equipment and be decked out with flat-screen televisions. As well, it will feature a billiards table and a bar.

The Festival Tower spa will be worthy of any five-star hotel and will offer several state-of-the-art treatment rooms, as well as yoga, Pilates and dance studios, all overlooking a meditation garden, which will feature a sculpture by noted Canadian artist Peter Powning as its centrepiece.

The grand staircase on the outside of the building, that leads from the 10th to the 11th-floor amenity space, was based on a set of stairs located in the famed Casa Malaparte in Capri, Italy. The latter was featured prominently in the 1963 movie Le Mépris (Contempt), directed by Jean-Luc Godard, starring the unlikely duo of Jack Palance and Brigitte Bardot.

The aim of the Festival Tower is to treat residents like stars – complete with five-star-inspired hotel service that includes everything from arranging housekeeping, to dog walks, to ordering dinner from two Oliver & Bonacini (they of Jump, Canoe, Auberge du Pommier and Biff's fame) restaurants that will set up shop in the podium.

One of the two culinary attractions will be located on the second floor and will offer an artisanal fine dining experience (a little less than Canoe, but a step up from Jump). On the first floor, a more casual 140-seat market café that will stay open late, is on the menu.

The first-floor facility will also offer takeout food for residents on the go, and will feature a 70-seat terrace.

All this sounds like it might carry a small-budget-movie price tag. But, in fact, a recent release of suites hand-picked by Reitman himself and dubbed "The Director's Edition" start from the $400,000s (for 568 square feet) and top out at $2 million (2,289 square feet).

Most B movie productions cost more than that.

The Director's Edition will be sold on Sept. 19, by appointment only. You can register online at festivaltower.com.

The public has not been forgotten in all this planning. Noah Cowan, TIFF's artistic director, says the complex will feature a film library in the atrium which will be open to movie buffs and students alike.

For more information on the film festival go to tiff.net. For more on the Bell Lightbox and the Essential 100 Film Collection, go to belllightbox.ca. For information on the Festival Tower and to register for the Director's Edition sale, go to festivaltower.com.

http://s770.photobucket.com/albums/xx341/scullydog259/Casa7_Sept13-09.jpg

Since the underbellies of all the balconies are all bare concrete so the building looks all concrete and it overpowers the blue glass...

Just saying-
