Aqua is nicer to me because of it's massive height..

But absolute world is EXTREMELY unique (at least for Canada) and is something i've never come across before... BUT it's not that tall for such a unique building which is why it is so low profile in the global scheme...

I think i might have to update my profile pic
Whats amazing is that the concept is so simple and yet the effect is so dramatic. Its a building that could of been built decades ago and one that will still look good decades from now.

Absolute world is indeed the Canadian variant. If it was only 700ft+ it might of been just as eye-catching, perhaps even more...

As my first post I may annoy some lovers of that Aqua building in Chicago, but in my opinion, Absolute World is a much more iconic structure despite it's lack of height.

The only pictures that are ever shown of Aqua are always from an angle that few people will ever see it on a daily basis: Close up from the ground. (As shown above in several posts.) It is indeed interesting from this angle, however most Chicagoans and tourists will view it from afar. Have you seen what it looks like from a distance? It looks like an early 60's international style skyscraper in New York that was bombed or caught fire some time ago.

The beautiful undulating feature of the balconies, just doesn't "read" at a distance: The view most people will get. On the other hand, a design like Absolute World will be visually effective at almost any distance. I'm not much into twisty buildings on the whole, but if you must design with this technique, then I feel it should work on all scales and angles.

I'll try and post a pic to demonstrate my point, but it's my first time using this.

Exactly how far are we talking about? I agree it's the most dramatic from streetlevel but the same can be said about most towers. I've seen Aqua from a distance and it still looks better than most. I'm not convinced Absolute won't look like just another glass elliptical tower.

Traynor

Exactly how far are we talking about?

Judging by pics I viewed on Google images, I suppose even from as little as few city blocks away to a few kilometers.

If I could figure out how to post a picture... (Yes, I thoroughly read the section on posting images...and still didn't get it. ) I would post a render I have created that demonstrates the impression Aqua gives me.

Perhaps some tutelage on image posting from more experienced forumers is in order.

http://vincemichael.files.wordpress.com/2009/10/mill-pk-aqua.jpg?w=450&h=464

From Vince Michael at Wordpress

And with all due respect Sacamano, I don't agree that most towers look better from directly below. If you peruse Google images of most iconic buildings, the most common and often pleasing photos are from a medium distance to show scale and architectural features. However with Aqua Chicago, there is an inordinate amount of shots from directly below.

I believe Absolute World in Mississauga will photograph well, whether you're at 50 meters away looking up, or from 5 kilometers. IMO

Traynor
Oct 26, 2009, 7:07 PM
Now that I may have worked out the image posting issue, allow me to post the render I mentioned previously... IMO Aqua Chicago reminds me of an early 60's NY skyscraper that caught fire and was never repaired.

100% agreed... Absolute world is more iconic for "Canada" probably.. BUT it is probably not known to others, globally... It lacks the height to get all the attention...

Absolute world has a more "unique" design... It looks REALLY curved and it widens and slims down in certain parts of the building.. Also, the building itself is curved, (unlike Aqua who's balconies add the wavy design)..

BUT Aqua is a cooler building cause it's SO FREAKIN HUGE!!!

I don't believe we are even at "The Best Part". Judging by progress so far, we are many floors below that.

The rendering below is from the official website and has lower distortion than most visual renderings (Yes, I'm talking to you "L Tower South Elevation Rendering" *LOL).

The "Here" line is approximately where construction is at right now and it clearly shows we are not near the full twist yet... So I feel the jury is still out on this.

I have never "determined" the height of any building... I just go by numbers other people put forward. (possible exception on 18 York)

In the case of Absoluteworld, I was always suspicious about the original numbers put forward. (Less than 3 metres per floor)

C. No one else drew any of my drawings. You'll have to use your trusting nature to accept that. The only drawing that might be too short now is my diagram of Absoluteworld 4. And that one is quite old now, one of the earliest I ever made. Just with MS paint and its amazing 64 colors. Still get the feeling that you are interpreting my post as some sort of shot at you. This couldn't be further from the truth. We all appreciate what you do not only in drawing hundreds of buildings but keeping up them up to date as new information is found.

My appreciation is why I like to keep old versions of redesigned proposals as cancelled projects eventhough it has led to some heated debate.

Let's just hope this guy is who he says he is. The one thing good about all the real estate spamming UT's development forum is that it is attracting many representatives of the developers.

Anyway... I found some cool renders that I don't think I'd seen before. The aerial shots seem to show a fairly accurate rendition of how these towers will appear at the MCC. The curves are definitely apparent at moderate distances. Personally I wish Ice in DT T.O. had AW curves with Ice's height.

IMO X looks a little TOO Wide at it's sides and that makes it look less tall... But from the North/South it looks great!... From the shots i took it's gonna be a HUGE cluster once Boutique and X2 are built... But it's gonna TOTALLY block out EVERYTHING (Manulife, Casa, BSN, Crystal Blu, Uptown) cause couture is shaped like X Condo (wide east/west facing sides)... We'll see

I'm SOOO sad!.... 1BE would have looked SOOO sexy from those shots ^^^

:previous: Agreed Steveve. Until I see new renders of the GG Number One Bloor, I still can't let go of the other one. I even saved the promotional video from the website. That's where these screen captures came from:

One Bloor is long dead and buried ... let it go

Sure it was tall but its design was average at best and "average" for such a tall tower is not we want.

Jeez, Are you're ever obsessed with girth. X's dimensions are just fine.

Okay... srry Sacamano... this will be probably one of (or my) last posts of Bazis' 1BE...:notacrook:

I really loved how 1BE balanced the skyline to the north and how it made balance to the rest of the skyline aside from the CBD...I also like how it kind of marked the "end" of the skyline to the north sorta like saying "this is were it ends!"... Cause right now from a distance it's hard to tell were the borders of downtown are... It also "in a way" extends the skyline as it shows there are really tall buildings away from the CBD...

*I think 1BE's design was just fine and it actually fit's in to the Yorkville skyline (aside from it's towering height :haha: ).. I wouldn't want something crazy like Absolute world rising so tall at Yonge-Bloor cause it would look messy and clash with the rest of the skyline...

GG is gonna have a REAL challenge when it comes to rivalling what Bazis did in terms of height for 1BE... Chances are we won't see anything near as tall as 1BE from GG :(

Let's "try" to get back on topic! ***if there IS something on topic to talk about :haha:

I dont know but, I find continuing to cry over some failed tower in the midst of a renewed building boom as sucking the life out of things as well as unnecessary spam. Time to move on to better things.

Not to mention your thinly veiled homophobic comments... Totally unnecessary in an open forum for discussion.

"since when did I get dragged into this???!!!"... lol but wtf people!!???

AND SPEAKING of Totally unnecessary in an open forum for discussion. what about THAT comment... this is a casual thread ok?...

You can say whatever you want as long as it has something to do with what someone said... and it should be related to skyscrapers (but you don't need to SPAZ if someone says something off topic once in a while)

And I have to agree with Traynor on that.. you do need to calm down a little Sacamano... We're all here to have fun and talk about our interest in skyscrapers and related topics... You are being immature with those comments and NO I AM NOT GAY!... NOT EVERYBODY IS LIKE YOU

and watch your language.... there are kids on this website! (and other websites too... if you know what i mean ;) )

***and if you haven't noticed Sacamano... your line is "You are sooooo goodlookin"... if you have't noticed 99% of the people on this website are probably men so............................

What have i done to you Sacamano to deserve these unnecessary comments????!!!! (aside from what i just said  :haha: )

***and don't mess with Traynor cause he's new... and everyone deserves to be welcomed :)

Be more happy (or gay - jks.) Sacamano and to all members on skyscraperpage... seriously... the world will be a happier place :D

Let's all be friends :)

^lol, what's good to wipe my monitor clean from coffee/muffin sputtery?

in Sacamano's defence, i think this was said in gest -a reference (only?) to steveve's youth.
in regards to the old 1BE, i really think it's time to turn the page on this one. if anyone is (distraught and) interested enuf, then they can start a new nostologic thread about the "gone but not forgotten projects". (a great final resting place for Sapphire too) -i, for one, absolutely loved the dead baziz tower (as was) but bringing up passed projects without pertinence to the current is unproductive and adds little to 'exchangeable value'.

I have seen literally thousands of pictures of Vancouver and Toronto but this shot left me completely bewildered, unable to tell which city I was looking at since both cities have so many residential towers now. I finally figured out the shot is of Vancouver due to the piano-shaped Westin hotel on the right that gave it away. Speaking of which, that's kind of a cool building.
