Yeah!!!... in a way... (cause of those buildings in the suburbs/far distance)...

I do find that a little annoying that Toronto has so many sub-urban condos/apartments... I think a city looks best when one area (downtown) has pretty much all of the highrises... So the attention is drawn to that area and you know that the area is DOWNTOWN! ... Toronto/GTA has SOOO many highrise condos everywhere!...

And little city centres such as Scarborough, Mississauga, and the mega suburb North York!!!... it's disturbing to find 150m towers popping out of suburbs... But then again... it creates awesome density!!!
:)

There are pros and cons to this but it gets weird sometimes

IMO i ain't got a problem with the little scars (they're probably crystals) on Crystal Blu... the glass bothers me a little (it used to bother me ALOT) but now i'm getting used to it :)

I know what you mean Sacamano ^^^

There is no real "structure" in the base of the tower... Lots of different stuff everywhere...

But alot of it is cause the shots are close-ups... If you get a broader picture then you can see how it all comes together,,,

The tower is nice and clean but a bit fat/short...

But the tower is not bad,,, It blends in very nicely in it's surroundings :)

Awesome Fairmont update:

I assume they will be open for the Olympics then ??

SFUVancouver
Nov 29, 2009, 9:34 PM
They are pushing hard for a January opening. The hotel will definately be ready and likely most, if not all, of the condos will be ready for occupancy in time for the Olympics.

BC Ferries will be opening a visitor information/booking centre in the podium to help entice people to travel the coast and visit Vancouver Island. Tourism Vancouver's flagship visitor info centre is across the street and both of these are next door to the Convention Centre, cruise ship terminal and two additional hotels.

I really want to like the Fairmont Pacific Rim. I like individual architectural elements, its massing, and the overall program is great, yet the podium is still is not really working for me. I think it is how the materials meet one another that is my issue, especially how the white marble meets the green spandrel glass. I will echo the comment about a lack of weight or structure at the bottom of the tower on the white marble side. In fact it may be the white marble element's apparent weight that does not really work for me. Call me old fashioned by that much apparent weight just wants some support rather than floating as is the case here. I think they would have done well to simplify their materials pallet by even one element, specifically the white marble or the spandrel glass panels, and maybe even the matte finished granite blocks or the mullion-free glazing above the ballroom.

Anyway, I certainly look forward to seeing how it all looks when the last of the hoarding is down in the coming weeks.

I like the badass metal tetris thing at the base of Fairmont, but it doesn't work with anything else in the building, like all the dainty light-coloured balconies and railings, the mullions, the dated-looking marble portion of the podium (FCP-style re-clad anytime soon?)... Dunno how the city allows something cool like that for the podium, yet insist on a weak-ass cheng palette for the tower as usual...

Not a huge fan of Absolute world right now... there's something dishonest about creating the "twist" with staggered shear walls, as opposed to structural columns that follow the form. Unfortunately the Ritz in Vancouver might have to follow that path for the redesigned '"affordable" scheme...

The towns. Interestingly they've poured a concrete slab in front of them, I'm not quite sure for or why. Time will tell.

HOLY CRAP!... Telus' tower's base looks wicked and clean!... like a brand new Telus store in a mall!... I wish it was an Apple store...

Festival is gettin SOOO tall now

Not a huge fan of X but it's surely better than nothing!!! (the area was so low profile before he/she came in... -TWSS! ;) )

I plan to get some updates on X later on today (if it doesn't get dark on me like last time :hell: )

X's glass is the clearest glass I've seen on a Toronto residential highrise in a long time. I'm curious how this will translate once occupation has commenced.

Speaking of X...

I've created another meaning for FTW... F*** The Weather :hell:

I managed to bring my camera today and snap some shots of X and other projects... It was DARK by the time i got there!... So all the shots turned out really unclear and dark.. oh well... FTW!

I dunno, I have the same problem as well. It must be our cameras.

What kind of camera do you need to get high resolution nighttime shots? I would love to know.

I use a point and shoot (i think it is most common)...

To get HQ night shots... I think you'll need a DSLR (the black ones with the larger lenses)... Point and shoots get the job done during the day...

*I think there are settings on your camera to get better night shots but my camera is really complex... I'm still finding my way around it :haha:

There's a guy on UT named Redroom Studios... he should know cause ALL his photos are amazing!... Check out his shots (esp. night shots) on Flickr..

Actually, now that you mentioned it, I just started toying around with my camera and found out how to get it set for night scenes. I'll definitely be taking advantage of that sometime within the next week. :)

We'll see what I can come up with for some nighttime cityscapes!

It's not so much the weather... ITS THE STUPID SEASON :hell: .. I HATE WINTER (except for christmas of course!)...

It get's dark at like 5:00!!!!!!??? :hell:

I should say FTS now... (S being Season)

*I was on bloor last night and it was nice to see alot of projects along the way!... SOO many things happening:

One Bedford on Bloor looks MASSIVE!... SOO glad to see it extend the bloor stretch of high-rises... ESPECIALLY in the Museum/RCM/Varsity area... There were no high rises there before...

Museum house underway...

155 Cumberland looks about done... The little lightboxes look great at night (they were all illuminated cause i think they're working on each floor)

Uptown/Crystal blu look great... Crystal is having a huge impact right now...

Four Seasons is now visibly above ground from Bay/Bloor!

**Casa looks dark as ever!!!... Practically no lights at the time I visited... Dissapears in all my photos :haha: ... Someone on UT got scared with all my terrorist remarks about planes crashing into dark lit buildings... :haha:
:)

Looks like Absolute World North and Uptown will be joining the top 10 list since the MLS twins and Jamieson will be completed soon. Possibly Burano as well if the rumored height increase to 163 M happens.

Steveve, do you have a "scene" option on your camera? I have that on mine. There's an up arrow below and if I flick through it, I get options for different settings.

The only reason they turned out as well as they did was that I was standing on top of a parking garage with lights glaring on me in all directions.

I tried the same thing in the dark taking pictures of the city on a large hill (former dump). I had light pollution/city lights on all sides of me (outside of the park), but my pictures turned out almost pitch black when it should've actually been a very bright photo.
