Wow, charlie made the list. Didnt expect that. Nice to see it on this thread, dont know how long it will last here though, at least will all the action in the top ten sure to push some of the towers there into this list. Which is not a bad thing now that I think about it.

For some reason, i never seem to want to head directly over to the tower to snap shots... i guess i just get lazy and overlook this tower too much (and lack caltrane's ambitions for this tower :haha: !) But yes, i hope this one is ready for september... the mechanical box seems to be taking a while...

Great pics of Uptown/Crystal! They looks really awesome from bloor/avenue! Great skyline fillers thats for sure! I can't believe we didn't see them last year! What a boring skyline :haha:

For me, its certain strips of Bay Street (like around college to the north)... But i've never felt toronto canyons being as tall and grand as those in NY and Chicago... There's some inconsistency between alot of the buildings which leave many gaps in the street wall... i'm not a hater though :notacrook:

Bay by college and further south , south of queen, can get a good canyon too, but bay just doesnt comapre to the feel of the king canyon, especially the northern portion of bay.

And no nothing compares to Manhattan, not even chicago, thats why i said feels like it. There is no substitute.

I noticed this over at UT that the entertainment district has just been booming with construction!.. in this shot there area 3 skyscrapers under construction, and they're all topped off!... i can't believe simcoe was the only thing there 5 years ago :haha: how dull...

And in caltrane's first shot of uptown, it looks like a tank! Its finally dominating crystal blu and the cladding seems to be weathered (which looks interesting):D

caltrane74

The construction is just the beginning. All the construction that you saw in the past, was just a warm up. Toronto is gonna burn up with construction in the next few years. Lots of big projects going down with a particular focus on the Entertainment District and Yorkville.

These areas will become the new playgrounds of the rich and famous. I notice that the younger celebs seem to really like these areas of Toronto when they come here. They feed off the vibe. I guess they think it's electric..... who knows.. :)

That reminds me....

Nothing to do with vibe. The celebrities that see Toronto as nothing more than another stop on the tour hang out in these neighbourhoods because that's where the hotels are.

I still wish your passion was more inclusive. I don't think your focus on the Top 30 gives a great representation of design in Toronto

That is some sick cladding. Maybe the best cladding I've ever seen go on a high rise in Canada. And that includes the Four Seasons, which also has bomb cladding, but dare I say, this is probably better. Tower will be shorter than Four Seasons, but the cladding is better, always a tradeoff, can't have your cake and eat it too, I guess.

Burano is gonna be one big condo. Even if it's not taking up all that floor space, I suspect it will at the very least take up a third of it.

Haha if you're talking about the Terasen building then yeah, thats a bit of an exaggeration.

After being a coming attraction for seven years, Bell Lightbox will finally open on the first weekend of the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival, the Star has learned.

TIFF’s long-awaited new home at King St. W. and John St., which has endured some difficult birth pangs, gives the organization a year-round presence in the city’s entertainment district.

Following the opening of the festival on Thursday, Sept. 9, TIFF will put the spotlight on the Lightbox, with a public opening set for Sunday, Sept. 12.

Detailed plans for the opening celebrations will be announced Friday in Cannes, France, with the aim of maximizing publicity throughout the international film world.

Designed by architect Bruce Kuwabara, the Lightbox has five screening auditoriums, gallerys for exhibitions, an enhanced film reference library and educational facilities as well as restaurants and bars suitable for social events.

In 2003, TIFF announced a partnership with filmmaker Ivan Reitman and his two sisters, whose family had for years owned the site (a former parking lot and onetime car wash) and the Daniels Group, a developer specializing in condos.

TIFF’s five-level podium is part of a complex that also includes a 46-storey residential tower.

Reaching its fundraising target of almost $200 million (including $129 million for the building itself plus money for operating costs and endowment) proved to be much more problematic than anticipated. As much as $40 million of that money may have to be raised after the building opens.

Nevertheless, the opening is sure to be one of Toronto’s hottest cultural/social events of the year.

Still 40 million dollars short of the goal....

TIFF to unveil its new Lightbox building, Tim Burton exhibit this fall

Art by Tim Burton, which will be included in an exhibition at the Toronto International Film Festival's new headquarters this fall.

By Mary Vallis May 14, 2010 – 3:51 pm

The Toronto International Film Festival yesterday announced that its new headquarters — a boxy, five-storey building featuring five theatres — will open on Sept. 12, in the midst of this year’s festivities.

A collection of drawings, sculptures and videos by filmmaker Tim Burton will be one of the first exhibits featured at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The TIFF Bell Lightbox, now under construction at in downtown Toronto’s theatre district, will also feature a three-storey public atrium, a bistro, restaurant, lounge, two galleries, three learning studios, staff offices and more.

The Burton collection, comprised of more than 700 items, was organized by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. While the work is on display, film lovers can also attend limited runs of Mr. Burton’s films or attend free family activities and lectures.

“Connecting a lot dots is going to be, for me, the most amazing thing,” Piers Handling, director and CEO of TIFF, said from Cannes yesterday. “It’s to have not just in-cinema experiences, where people just go and see a movie. It’s to actually broaden that.”

The TIFF Bell Lightbox was designed by KPMB, a Toronto-based architectural firm. The cinemas range from 80 seats to 550 seats and are designed as “distinct architectural volumes — a box within a box,” TIFF says.

Most of the building’s first floor will be in operation by the grand opening on first Sunday in Toronto’s annual film festival, including one theatre and a gallery. Other part of the building may also be open, depending on the summer construction schedule.

The project has been in the works for a decade. TIFF has raised 90% of the $196-million needed to finance the project. A few weeks, ago, TIFF hired John Tory — chair of the Toronto City Summit Alliance, broadcaster with Newstalk 1010 and former leader of the provincial Progressive Conservatives — to help raise the remaining 10%.

“As we get closer to completion, we’re running through the people on hard hat tours and they’re getting really excited about it,” Mr. Handling said.

Not much happening at the Couture site.. equipment seems to be just hanging out. Maybe by the start of the week, we'll start seeing some action here..

This will be a cool building kinda excited to see how it will look, in regards to its surroundings including the Xcondo towers.

Here is a quick render.

i love how all the towers in and around yonge/bloor look so freakin tall! (mostly due to the low lying shops bordering yonge street and the vacant 1 bloor lot).. Crystal/Uptown/Casa look pure epic when you're there! they just look SOOO tall! :D

Once uptown reaches its full height, it'll look tall as hell cause its skinny! (same with crystal)

if you look at the original rendering, www.18york.com, the glass was different on the south east corner and was pulled down to the street. i thought this gave a nice effect to the building. too bad they removed this feature. kinda looks like a suburban office block now but the glass is nice.
