ROCP looks INCREDIBLE in that shot if you ask me... and the way these towers look together is stunning! Great composition from rocp (tallest looking) to eaton centre towers! (shortest lookin there)...
The west facing sides of both ROCP towers look stunning for some reason in that lighting!. these towers look really grand in this shot! very new york like! powerful looking towers if you ask me! :D

Just saw the comment by Davin comparing 18 York to some Oakville business park. Is this guy on crack?!? Nothing urks me more than the box/not a box crowd that can't see past something as infantile as shape.
I find RoCP looks best up close from streetlevel. The window wall isn't half bad and they are massively tall. From any distance, they look too bulky for what they are and the abrupt concrete crown is pretty nasty.

when you are down near Queens park, i actually think ROCP and Murano look amazing! ROCP doesn't look chunky from there if you ask me...
I like how Murano and ROCP have twin towers.. The shorter towers are the north tower in murano, and the south tower of ROCP.. and the taller towers are nearer to the center... i think they look sweet next to eachother. :D

There's hasn't been a lot of discusion. I guess the fact that it's community housing so information is not as readily available as a marketed condo and that's there just so much going on in the city right now could explain how a 41 storey tower has been largely ignored.

Yeah! Tiff really put alot of little details into this podium! It's sick! At night time these will stand out (especially when they add more of em)

It's not a NYC style, it's a 1920s skyscraper style. Setbacks were introduced on extremely tall buildings for shadowing reasons. NYC just built more of them than other cities in north America because it was the biggest city around. Being famous for it doesn't make it a NYC style building.

That building can be found all around the NYC and while it is very much attempting to be 1920's awesome, it feels more 2010 half arsed.

EDMONTON — A giant steel bucket descended from the heavens over downtown Edmonton Monday and plopped gobs of wet concrete onto the 28th floor of Epcor Tower.
Men in business suits poked trowels into the muck, then workers in hard hats quickly smoothed the patch perfectly level, making history as it hardened.

Festival tower lookin awesome by skybean at SSC:
FREAKIN INSANE!!
The way the mechanical box is looking adds plus points to the building in my opinion! It makes it more interesting to look at aside from the plain old box! (cause festival tower has no setbacks)
One thing i noticed from above is the puny little buildings right in front of festival tower (south-west corner)... Its freakin small (even compared to the podium! its crazy just looking at it!
Who woulda thought they'd build something this big here!!!

dunno about everyone else but i am getting sick of these giant box podiums...
I can't say there's really anything I like about Festival. The style is bland, the glazing is bland, but worst of all is the monster podium which is way, way out of scale for that neighborhood, and not even as interesting as it looks like it's trying to be.
steveve is right to call it "insane," just maybe not for the same reason as he intended.

^ I tend to agree about the podium.
I coined a phrase to describe parts of Trump and I think it applies for Lightbox as well.
Po-Brute
Post-brutalism - noun - (dim. Po-brute)
1 - A style of architecture that incorporates modern materials or style cues in an overbearing way.
2 - ill-fitting modern construction that dominates surrounding street wall.
post-brutalist - adj.
1 - An architectural feature or construction that overwhelms the senses and takes modern excess to the extreme. (most likely incorporates LED lighting and patchwork glass in some way.)

well.. i guess festival is insane both ways :haha: !
The podium is huge, but its no ordinary podium for a condominium.. It'll house the home for TIFF which is a big deal... so either way, this podium was meant to be huge!

Yes we know Cal, but they could have disguised that with tiny setbacks and architectural features that made it look more like a building than a cruise ship that lost its way. Regular looking windows to imitate the look of floors would have helped as well.
Any attempt to address the extant architecture on King would have been a welcomed addition.

The podium could of been better but I totally disagree with regular windows and traditional floors delineations being a better fit. Also, To call the Hyatt better is almost worthy of a stoning. It is massive and overbearing in its current context but represents the future massing and scale for this neighbourhood. Just look at Pinnacle, M5V, Charlie and Hudson. A proposal is in to redevelop part of restaurant row with a 40 plus storey tower.

Fair enough complaint. But I like the contrast in styles between the new and modern on one side of King Street. And then the older early to mid 20th century style on the other. The electric lightsof the TIFF Podium will actually give the older buildings across the street more presence and a deeper impact. Infact you might argue that with all the light shining down on the older buildings, they will draw far more attention to themselves than the TIFF tower will to itself, with its own lighting scheme.

Crystal blu looks really AWESOME now that its nearing completion, its a nice contrast with Uptown!...
In the first shot, its hard to believe just a year ago, Manulife was completely visible from Yonge/Bloor. The thing about this intersection is that all the towers recently constructed (casa, Uptown, crystal, etc..) just got so much attention/open space to view them as they rose!... and not to mention, they look mammoth from the intersection cause they are totally unobstructed!
***in the 2nd shot of Uptown, there is a new bare section of cladding just above on of the setbacks that looks ugly right now, i'm sure it'll look better cause windows will soon follow but i don't know why they didn't put windows there...
1 Bloor will change the intersection ALOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Solaris is a hundred floors too short, but in that photo the lighting, the blue sky, the dusty road and vast expanse of open skyline gives the impression it is on the outskirts of Dubai.

I'm squarely on the other side. I've been waiting for this type of scale at street level since I arrived in Canada (1980). Hopefully, this type of scale will become standard, and the puny little bases we've tended to get up till now are a thing of the past.

If you're driving down the 401 (both directions), when you see Solaris's east and west facing sides (the chunky sides), they look SOOO fat!, i hate it!. from the north and south they look great slim but they sure do look overweight from some angles!
If they did add another 20 or so stories (lol... not a hundred :haha: ), i'm sure it would have been a little cooler.. and the cladding needs work too :(
(but its not topped off yet so we haven't seen the real deal). :D
that shot in particular of solaris makes scarborough look like a desert! :haha: lots of work to be done on that lot before it becomes the community it aims to be! :) (its funny how on the other side of that shot there is the 401!)

Not at all. Dubai still has a very very long way to go before it's a city on the same level as Toronto. Toronto is a big global city, Dubai is a theme park trying to become a global city. In addition, I wouldn't trade our buildings for theirs for all the tea in China.

Caltrane, your pics of Uptown/Crystal are OFF THE CHARTS!
Both towers look their best!!! And i've gotten to like crystal a bit more! I don't like the colour of the cladding, but i do like the texture/patterns they have with it! It just looks sick!
And so does Uptown too! Despite its flaws, it's AWESOME! i think Uptown/Crystal look great next to eachother!
Is Casa still on the list????

I don't know why One St. Thomas is always compared to Uptown... I honestly think they have way more differences than similarities...
Though they are almost the same colour, and both residential, The only real thing that they both share is the area that they're built in: Yorkville.
One St. Thomas is the high-end-king of Yorkville (and very exclusive too.. its about half the height of Uptown). the higher they get, the more cheapened they are (generally speaking.. not all the time). Its quality vs quantity (i just had de-ja vu :haha: )

Yeah, I don't get it. Both Crystal Blu and Uptown are average at best. The fact they are tall only makes being average worse.
