Sorry, guess the perspective makes it a bit confusing but you can't actually see the base of the building in either of those pics. It doesn't have a historic base though it will have the original Woodward's department store building on one corner of the site. There will also be a second shorter tower that will eventually rise next to the one in those pictures.

The original building from 1903 is the one that has the W on the top in this...
http://www.vancouver-real-estate-direct.com/images/woodwards.jpg

And the shorter building has apparently had a couple additional storeys approved to be added on...

I was driving down Yonge Street on my way back from Richmond Hill on Friday... and it's just amazing how much Quantum dominates the skyline from as far up as Steeles. These shots are further down though, from about York Mills.

Without a doubt, at least for me, Quantum is one of my favourite 'new' condo towers. It reminds me a bit of IFC in Hong Kong.

We are all waiting with anticpation for the "Cityplace Park". That should solve it's vibrancy problem. - It's gonna be a huge park!! - And from what I've seen, it will be a very pretty park too. And close to the waterfront, and the financial core.

Cityplace has been touting that park since pre-sales at Apex/Matrix. They've completed over 10 buildings now and still nothing.
I know it's coming (and it looks great) but I think it's pretty crummy that they've gotten away from building it for so long.

If you think about it, there's not one "community" amenity at Cityplace. When I lived in Optima, i always laughed because people were forced to walk their dogs along the sidewalks and have them pee in what little grass there was around the building.

One thing about Concord here in Vancouver is that the city required them to have parks constructed and completed prior to residents moving in. Not 10 years after...

Kinda cheap on Cityplaces' part IMO.

I know there is already a Hilton diagram up on this site, but if someone still wanted to redo it with a little more detail and maybe include all three buildings in one, it would be nice to see for Niagara Falls.

We are having a debate on UrbanToronto right now about this monstrosity. I can't believe with all the nice buildings going up in Toronto. Niagara Falls gets this pure garbage.

It's tall and it's gross. Great way to scare the tourist away!!

Edit:

One has to wonder what type of City Planning Council does Niagara Falls have anyways? - Are they all Drunk Bastards or something.....just wierd, they would allow this crap to get built in their city.

It's like they took the old Hilton and stretched it to double the height :yuck: . It's now completely out of scale and (sadly) is going to dominate the skyline. It could really use a couple of setbacks.

I guess, because it has to handle Inter-City and Suburban bus traffic. Those 2 functions are happening out of 2 seperate bus terminals right now.

One on Bay Street, One at Union Station.

It's been adding exactly 10 floors in 4 months (isn't that similar to RBC? hm but RBC seems to have huge floor plans), at a very irregular pace.
They'll reach the last setback soon, then the last third of the tower should go up really fast with the warm weather.

I find it hard to believe Montage's published height of only 450 feet is accurate, particularly given how much taller the roof element is than the original render.

I'm going to take up a collection and hire a surveyor to report on Cityplace towers, many of which seem much taller than their "published" heights.

Yep that is still part of the project, however it was never planned to be put on top, it will be ontop of the smaller SRO component fronting Hastings St.

The most impressive part of this project IMO is the street wall being created by the podium, it is very large and imposing and should tie in very well with the existing neighbourhood.

Leftcoaster, you're close but not quite. The W sign will be on top of a new metal base on the elevator shaft of the Hertiage building which will become an office building (the roof deck will be the daycares playground).

Signature goes into sales next year (2009) - We still don't know how tall it will be, but figure on it being between 220 Meters to 260 Meters. So it will help out as well.

I don't think Concord Adex has the balls to get into a fighting match with 1 Bloor East and College Park 3 for the tallest condo in the city anymore.

koops65
May 29, 2008, 5:39 PM
1 Bloor and Aura will both be under construction before Signature has to decide on a final height. It will be easy for them to decide to go for it if they want to 'win' the height battle.

WhipperSnapper
May 30, 2008, 3:41 AM
I'd be surprised if Concord Adex goes for over 900 feet and even more surprised if the city were to approve that plan given how much additional density has been built already and the adverse reaction a 900 plus footer over by Spadina would have on the "cone effect"

It appears that Harbourview II, West One and Montage have all been upgraded in height. All 3 are listed as being over 500 ft now...
Montage has leapfrogged over the other 2 at 157 m, West One is at 155 m and Harbourview II is 153.3 m.

I used a range finder but because the buildings are so tall and packed together it took multiple measurements from several vantage points to measure the whole structure. I held off on posting because of the potential degree of error but, in the end thought, what the heck. I did have problems getting a good reading from the steel frame of Montage's mechanical penthouse though.

No, I just collect tools and equipment with an entire apartment locker room full of it much to the chagrin of other residents. Thought I dust off and test out a small range finder I picked up years ago this past weekend considering the on going debate for the last while and no replies to sent out emails.

I have a question about the building being built in vacouver, the "woodward's", what buildings did they tear down to make it?

LeftCoaster
Jun 12, 2008, 9:20 PM
they tore down the back of the old woodwards department store and kept only the facade on one (SE) corner I believe

jlousa

That's correct, they only kept the very original building, the rest of the structure had been added onto over the years.
