You're welcome. I like to provide the links because it sometimes seems that there are plenty of people here on the forum that never browse the diagram section. Looking at a list of building names and heights beside them isn't the same as seeing drawings of the buildings beside each other IMO...

I agree - thanks again. :)

Also, thanks to Locked In for the HG photos.

^Unfortunately, that is the old render for Cinema. They have cheapened it down in the latest render.

Gone is the curtainwall windows and more balconies and spandrel have been added, but I do think it has a more interesting podium roof than the older one.

Yes, if there is no +2 degree weather for more than a week or two, I can almost guarantee you the lake will be frozen between the islands and harbourfront.

Just looking at that picture I know, North York Centre has a lot of work to go before, its patchyness is gone. Gibson Square and Emerald Park have got to help here. Make the place more urban, more hip, and more happening. Although I will admit that getting a seat and table at a Tim Hortons, Starbux, or Second Cup, is like hell. Even as it stands right now. This place will need a few more coffee shops, this is for sure.

The towers are boring and the podium too short but, I think most around these parts would be surprised to hear they weren't built during this era. I don't think the architecture would be improved either in a point tower format or whatever you are alluding to by refering them as "slab".

I assume this troll like stance you exude is partly in jest however, it wasn't funny a year ago.

It's pretty easy to mistake those two towers for the likes of 1001 Bay (or pretty much any 80's/90's tower along Bay). "slab" was to differentiate them from the tower at the far left, which i'm not familiar with. Plus, that word (along with "commie block") has never failed to provoke bitter defensiveness from forumers of a certain city :haha: Imagine if the slabsville thread was started on SSC, haha.

Incorrect. The brown building in the middle of that picture was built 5-10 years ago, while the blue one to its right was completed within the last year. The one on the left is part of the 3-tower Forest Laneway apartment complex, which was built in the mid-'70s.

to me it's not so much the glass that shines here, but it's the shape of the tower + location. It's great.
On a box tower, this glass would look pretty bad. -imo :haha:

Just curious, but what temperature do you figure construction shuts down? And does it shut down completely? Obviously, there are some things you simply couldn't do, others might be possible. Excavation and concrete pours would be very difficult, if not impossible.

At -20 degrees outdoor construction is usually shut down. But even still, there are diehards out there, and this is not a problem for doing work in the enclosed spaces of Towers under-construction. Such as in the lower levels of Trump even as the tower is rising above.

Of course, when the weather improves and the temperture rises, the pace of construction picks up, not only due to the better weather of course, but also due to the increase in daylight hours. So in the spring and summer, the frenzy of construction is mindboggling, at least when compared to the blahdays of winter.

Whippersnapper, used one of steveve boy's pictures over at UT to deduce from that the pile driver and shoring rig were in full activation at the Bremner Office Tower. So another Office Tower begins... Still two more on our radar for construction to begin....

Bay Adelaide 2 - this one is getting juicy as we do have word the bank has released the 500 million dollars required to build it.

45 Bay Street- nothing on the go just yet, but really looking forward to this one starting up as well.

OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!

THe Southcore Delta is also under construction. I totally missed that!!!!!

Cool, now 300 Front has its crane.

I wonder which building in this list will get its crane next.

Traynor
Feb 13, 2011, 11:27 PM
^It can't be the tower crane... It's in the wrong spot. Even for an external crane, that is too far away from where the tower will rise on the land. It must be for the lower portion on the North wall and general site usage.

Seen. That should be quite the Tower. It will bring Montreal back into the game. And create some striking lines.

I was in North York Centre again today, still rammed packed with people, and I was thinking about the 3 or 4 interconnected underground nodes or underground cities, at each of the major North York Intersections.. Sheppard Centre. Built. Hullmark Centre - Under Construction. Empress Walk - Built. Emerald Park Condos - Proposed. XEROX - Manulife Financial Centre Built. Gibson Square Under Construction.

Each one of these nodes is so busy underground, in the winter. Of course the ones that have been built, and all the new tower will increase the frenetic pace here. crazy.

Now that these two towers are under construction, it's time for a thorough look at the renderings. Buckle-up!

First up, a straight-up view from the south, the rendered view of line-drawn elevations:

http://urbantoronto.ca/picoftheday/images/SouthcoreSElev750.jpg

Now we go 3D, and sex it up a bit:

http://urbantoronto.ca/picoftheday/images/SouthcoreSOverall750.jpg

Approaching the building from York Street, we mostly see the PricewaterhouseCoopers Tower on the corner, but the Bremner Tower is in evidence to the west.

http://urbantoronto.ca/picoftheday/images/SouthcoreSEStreet750.jpg

Here we look down on the lower floors of the two office towers and their podium. GO and VIA tracks run in behind.

http://urbantoronto.ca/picoftheday/images/SouthcoreSPodium750.jpg

Here, a look at the entry area for the 30-storey Bremner Tower.

http://urbantoronto.ca/picoftheday/images/SouthcoreBremner750.jpg

Moving just a bit to the west we get a look at the Delta Hotel's courtyard entrance area.

http://urbantoronto.ca/picoftheday/images/SouthcoreFCHotelCtyd750.jpg

From west of the project along Bremner, we look back at the west side pedestrian entrance to the hotel.

http://urbantoronto.ca/picoftheday/images/SouthcoreWHotel750.jpg

And if we back up a bit more, we get an overall look at the project from the west side.

http://urbantoronto.ca/picoftheday/images/SouthcoreWStreet750.jpg

Whipping all the way around to the north side, this is the view of the complex as it would be seen from Citibank Place across the rail tracks.

http://urbantoronto.ca/picoftheday/images/SouthcoreNOverall750.jpg

And here we'll end the rendering tour with an overall look at the north elevations:

I am pretty sure more people will see these towers where they are than any other city in Canada, excluding Toronto and Montreal. (~1.5 million people could see them everyday if they look in the right direction)

Southcore is a nice-looking project. It reminds me a lot of the kind of developments Shanghai is seeing right now ie. hotel/office/residence.

caltrane74
Feb 15, 2011, 6:24 AM
Yeah for real. Southcore reminds me of projects in S. Korea. The glass on these towers though the same, is gonna be some really nice curtainwall. There are 4 towers under construction at York and Bremner, all over 500 feet. ICE with two towers over 200 meters.

Yeah, but the mechanical is not the greatest. I hope they figure something out before X2 tops out. It would be unfortunate to have two of these boxes so prominent in the Yorkville Skyline

Perhaps... But wouldn't it be worse if X2 got it right and that left X looking even worse for not covering their mechanical with glass or vent-like metal parapets.

Even though I lament the decision go the "cheapening route" and to not have a clean flat top on X, I think it would be wise to continue with the look, in order to create cohesion with the complex.

Agreed. If anything I think that the mech box at X2 should be made to mirror that of X as much as possible. Symmetry of design is very important with these two towers.

for some reason, X condo and casa look HUGE.... especially casa. i don't know what it is. it looks much taller than a 150m (ex. ROCP) when it's not. even than uptown. maybe it's cause they're basically boxes (with balconies)...

For me, the mech. box on X ain't horrible. but a flatter roof/less obtrusive mechanical box would have looked nicer. and yes, X2 needs the same element for continuity.

Alright then. You guys win.

Still though, these will be a nice looking couple of towers. And with Couture ans the projects on Sherbourne, we might have a hard enough time recognizing this area in a few years.
