Not true...
The "entire block" ECP would have occupied was from College down to Hayter. Which used to go through from Yonge to Bay. The block south of Hayter to Gerrard was lowrise factories and warehouses along Hayter.
So in conclusion: They could have co-existed. I will look for an old archive picture that clearly shows this.
Yonge and College from the air circa 1950. The red Square is the approximate area ECP would have taken. Yellow is where Aura is presently being built.

You learn something new everyday. I knew it was going to come back and bite me in the ass. I never gave this vision any additional attention as it was never going to be completed. It was ridiculously huge (four plus million square feet) and totally impractical (100,000 square foot plates) for Toronto at the time.

Wow I never noticed before but when it was built, MLG was really in the middle of nowhere.
Not actually, but compared to now when it's in the middle of downtown, in that picture it looks like it was built in the middle of a suburb.

I'm still patiently waiting for that fantasy render of College Park as it would look today if it had been completed as planned. Maybe one with AURA next to it? Pretty please? College Park I & II would need to be taken down, but I don't mind.

I hear ya isaidso. I am sorry it's taking so long and believe me I haven't forgotten about you. I just can't find a good enough photograph to work from. It requires a picture taken high above street level from the Northeast corner of Yonge and Carlton. If you know someone who can go down to 2 Carlton, go to the 18th floor, ask the law firm there (or whoever you find) if you can snap a few pictures from their window... Then I would have something to work with. All other angles would be practically useless to attempt to create a render.

Personally, I agree with you Steveve. I like the lines of the tower and then they just stop at the top. So many new buildings do this. They don't seem to culminate logically at the top with the proper architectural details.
I think the design of HG would be better served if it had been taller and some details like the ones I stole from the building next door, were added to the top.

I agree. What is nice about the post-modern buildings of the 80s and 90s is that they have the proper base, shaft and crown type of design, with the crowns offering an expression of glory. Post-modern buildings were designed to be beautiful, not simply utilitarian like many new buildings of today.

Well that isn't so terrible. I thought the roof was to be flat. Good to know some architect these days has some design sense to them.
Keep in mind, I like mid-century International Modernism such as the TD building next to HG. However that design sensibility is supposed to be simple and box-like. What I hate these days are the Neo-modernist/Post-Pomo that have architectural details which suddenly stop and are not resolved properly.

I enjoy the curtain wall on Hotel Georgia but I haven't changed my mind that the massing is awkward. I think it would look better if the whole sides bowed outwards and than in instead of one corner of a (hate to say it) box.
dleung
Mar 25, 2011, 5:32 AM
^^This. It would look a lot better even if they just had it so that the box part didn't protrude past the bowed-out section (facepalms), or if that corner occupied a greater percentage of each face (80/20 split instead of 60/40 on the SE side)

Miami's highrises are pretty crap quality too, but there's a somewhat nautical aesthetic over there, where this project would look out of place. There's no way to describe the arbitrary aesthetic of the pinnacle project other than "supersized 1990's Vancouver leftovers"

Clear Spirit (http://www.clearspiritliving.com/) and The Gooderham (http://www.liveatthedistillery.com/), by Cityscape and Dundee Realty (http://www.dundeerealty.com/), portend a brighter future for Toronto. They’re further proof that major stakeholders in this city – developers, architects, local communities, the city, and the buying public – finally are ‘getting it.’
Designed by architectsAlliance (http://www.architectsalliance.com/), with interiors by Chase Architecture and Ava Janikowski Architect (AJA), Clear Spirit and The Gooderham show how new buildings – done right – are essential to the existing urban fabric, even in / especially in historic districts like The Distillery. They energize the whole by injecting new life into underused and overlooked parts.

A view down the alley between the base of Clear Spirit to the west (right) and one of two preserved tank houses integrated into the base of The Gooderham to the east (left)
The north and east façades of the tank houses are intact and are being propped up during construction. The south and west façades will be rebuilt with original brick. The podium of Clear Spirit retains the same dimensions as the rack house it replaces. Legacy wood from all of these buildings is being reclaimed for flooring, furniture, and other interior elements in individual units, as an upgrade, and common areas. The ground floor of both bases will contain 100% retail, lobbies excluded.

The ribbon building, still in development and slated for completion in around 2015, will contain a pedestrian passage, which will continue under the rail corridor, linking The Distillery District with the East Bayfront / waterfront.

never was a fan of those gooderham clear spirit condos. something about them just doesn't work for me.
are they the same complex or what? they look similar, but aren't similar, and have completely different names....

right on! great picture! Vancouver is awesome, i don't know why. basically my 2nd favorite city in Canada. looks so fresh (if that makes any sense).
Regarding Parade, i'll be completely honest: I don't care about this project aside from the skybridge. wake me up when they're installing it! :haha:

Up to a point. Burano isn't bad, but Shangri-La is a cut above it. What Bay really needs is for its buildings to engage at street level better. It needs better paving, foliage, etc. Basically it needs the same type of transformation that is occuring on Bloor between Church and Avenue Road. Bay is getting better, but it will take another decade before it starts to fulfill its potential as one of Toronto's great streets. I'm confident that it will happen, but it's way too early to break out the champagne; Bay's got a long way to go still.

Awesome Tower! Did I mention these guys did advertising in my Magazine that came out in British Columbia last week.
Did I also mention, that Vancouver View ripped off our article on the Shaw Tower penthouse, in their current edition from my buddy here in the office. We had to laugh our asses off.
We'll put these fools out of business soon enough.
