Never liked the Pinnacle Towers, but they are darn tall and decent density fillers by the train tracks/Gardiner. Overall they are tolerable. Oh well, we're on to the next one...

I can't stand the vertical column type things that run up the corner of the pinnacle towers. If you look at it from one side, it looks like any other nondescript condo, but facing that corner it becomes a monstrosity in my opinion.

Everyone knows "density filler" is another word for "crap", but to use it to justify the blandness of point towers with views on all sides, surrounded by spacious driveways and podiums, is a bit of a stretch.

^^ 33 Bay is yet another sad reflection of the absence of urban planning at city hall. I'm a libertarian but I think there should be zoning in place with design and quality restrictions.

Burano looks great. People can trash the aA glass condos all they want, but it's still leagues better than the 80-90's concrete precast and crap brick condos/rentals on this stretch of Bay Street. Now that's what I call overdone blandness. Those ugly designs and weak podium street presence are the main reason why the upper Bay canyon is so pathetic. Bit too late to correct those mistakes but we can still work with what we have left and improve the streetscape. These glass towers (also add in U Condos and possibly Cresford's 1000 Bay) will break up the monotonous seas of grey and brown.

I hate to be the "bad news bear" but U Condos will have town homes fronting onto Bay. I'm hopeful for Burano's podium though.
That being said I wouldn't mind seeing a couple of those 80-90's condo/rentals replaced with tastefully done brick/metal curtainwall buildings. Many people forget that some of early Chicago school buildings were actually relatively cheap to construct compared to their masonary counterparts and employed well designed pre-fab details. I would love to see stuff like the Reliance building here.

Speaking of Chicago, anyone check out how ugly and disliked their new Ritz-Carlton building is: Puke (http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=182990&page=22). That building was wasted potential. As I mentioned you can easily do faux historic THE RIGHT WAY with a limited budget it's just the architects simply aren't good enough.
Kinda sad considering its prominent location.

Yeah I've never really understood the recent hate-on for aA. Seems that its based more on repetetiveness than actual architectural quality. Which is fair, I guess, but most of their buildings are quite well done when looked at as a one-off.
I walk by Burano on the way home from work and it's turning out quite nice (and imposing). A step up from most of the older Bay st stuff. U condos should be nice as well but I really can't imagine why anyone thought townhouses ON BAY was a good idea. It would be fairly horrible having your front door open right on the street there... I guess you can get away with a lot in this housing market.

I'm sure quite a few Chicagoians will disagree with you and lambast TO's Ritz Carlton for looking like an anorexic's thumbs-up when viewed from the side (http://urbantoronto.ca/picoftheday/renderings/RitzTorontoRender.jpg) ;)
Personally I think Chicago's Ritz is very decent.
Travis007
Oct 24, 2011, 12:24 PM
I'm not really aware nor actually care about what Chicagoans think about our Ritz, but from the harsh comments in that thread (http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=182990&page=22), it's safe to say that most Chicagoans find their cookie-cutter, pre-cast, faux-historic skyscraper to be repulsive. They also have a similar dislike for the Elysian. The positive comments seem to be coming from people from other cities, but Chicagoans will have a more honest opinion because it directly affects their city. This shows that other skyscraper/architectural enthusiasts in the world also share the same tastes, and hatred for precast-deco as I do. As I mentioned before, this is nothing more than an upscale version of (some of) Toronto's suburban high-rises.

Actually if you look closely, the Georgia looks terrible. They did a horrible job on the glass and it looks like a significant amount of it needs to be replaced. It's been sitting in that exact state for 2 months (I think) with hardly any work done.
The design of the building is great though, they just have to work out the kinks.

A significant amount needs to be replaced?
How do you figure? The building needs a good washing, which will happen once construction is finalized. Other than that I don't think the glazing contractor has much else to do aside from replacing a couple failed units, which is to be expected on any project.

^ I was under the impression that the backside of the building was window wall and was pleasantly surprised when I saw all that glorious curtain wall glass gleaming in the sunshine. It would almost look like an office tower from that angle if it were'nt for all the balconies.

:previous: About that, I think I have seen some office buildings which do have "balconies" oddly enough. The new Epcor Tower in Edmonton looks like it does. Also, in Burnaby the taller of the two gold office towers looks like it has a couple as well.
What are they for?

^Not sure what you mean by, " what are they for?" A balcony is a balcony even if they are few and far between in commercial developments. In Toronto, balconies on residential developments count towards the required amenity space and I'm sure it is similar in other jurisdictions. Otherwise, I think we'd see far more balcony-free residential buildings .

^Also I think balconies on residential buildings are considered more of a neccessity for obvious reasons whereas a commercial building they are a luxury.

I know, eh? Makes one wonder all the more why that one east corner - facing howe street - is windowwall.

It looks thin until you look at it from the west/east, then it gets significant girth.

What's up with the tower spacing here...
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7001/6509087059_3aebf58028_b.jpg
Edmonton has enacted a new zoning policy that requires 25m between window facing residential units so as to protect privacy.

As far as I know there is a 20 or 25m requirement between residential structures here in T.O as well.

Hopefully when all of the construction on Bay street is complete it will get a makeover like Bloor did. The sidewalk are pretty mangled up right now from all the heavy vehicles that have been going over them. There is no reason with the growing tax base in the core why some of that money can't be reinvested into street beautification. Although with our mayor spending any money in the core would go against every bone in his suburban body.

Burano is turning out great. For being so massive it meets the street level well.

Five Condos (http://skyscraperpage.com/cities/?buildingID=29454) is going to the Committee of Adjustment for another 5 floors, bringing it to a total of 50: http://www.toronto.ca/planning/pdf/cofa_tey_agenda_8feb12_pm.pdf
This will put it well over 500 feet.

I feel like if Burano was being built in other Canadian city it would be getting a lot more attention. Right now it seems like it's being overshadowed by the numerous other Toronto projects and proposals. I think it's a very underappreciated building.
