true, I suppose it's an indication of the level that Toronto is at with it's new buildings. I'm looking forward to seeing Burano fully finished.

Everyday, they look better and better.
Not too much longer, and there will be no more updates on these beauties. Sad day indeed.

Really? I always thought it was exactly what that neighbourhood needed. The juxtaposition of glass with brick is beautiful. The height discrepancy is a plus. I don't subscribe to the notion that if an area has no high rises, that high rises won't suit the area. The type of area is more of a deciding factor.

i actually really like couture's cladding.. we all knew this was gonna fail so hard by the renders, so i guess the only place it could go was up. i know it's cheap cladding, but the colours/contrast is pretty unique.

That's an old notice for the June 22, 2011, meeting. It sought a small list of changes (altered setbacks, changes to the mechanical room, etc...). All changes sought were approved. Old height 156M. New height 157.9M.

I think last time I saw, you can add all the American construction up across the country, and it doesn't add up to this build out!!!!
The only action at all is really in New York, with Las Vegas, Miami, and Chicago all slowed to a crawl! Most American cities have NOTHING tall underway, althoug OKC has built a new tallest!!
WhipperSnapper
Apr 25, 2012, 11:43 PM
Hardly a wide margin if at all. The pace of construction severely dropped off in 2008 and remains slow despite promise however, the US kingpin is still throwing up towers by the dozen. Add to it dozens of city/metros averaging a one or two towers and Toronto's figures suddenly become very attainable.

Apr 26, 2012, 1:05 AM
Well and not to mention the fact that New York City has 4 supertalls U/C and another 8 proposed and at least a few of them look like they will go through to construction phase. And even still, Four WTC is 298 meters, basically a supertall. So they have 5 very tall (and supertalls) U/C right now. Just because we have a high number of crappy short towers U/C doesn't really mean all that much.
New York's tallest 8 U/C combined probably come close to if not passing the combined height of all U/C towers in Toronto.
And I would hardly say construction has slowed to a crawl in Chicago and Miami, Chicago is building a new supertall(the 319 meter Waterview Tower) and Miami has five towers UC between 150 and 200 meters in height. That's not bad for a country just beginning to recover from a catastrophic recession. PLUS Chicago just finished a 413 meter tower in 2009!
Don't get too cocky guys. We're doing well... but we definitely lose the big-dick contest for now.

As much as I hate the boring surburban slab massing, 300 front is probably the only tower that is turning out better than I expected. The windows are pretty well camouflaged among the dark spandrel, and the raised panels do give it that effect in the render, which I had assumed was a non-starter.

Thats it right there!!!!!.... trust there is VERY LITTLE happening outside of New york, and if you take into account 911, most of that construction, is even skewed, and MUST be built regardless of economic conditions, due to psyche, and petriotism, oops patriotism!!! LOL
A bid deal here is a 12 story building.....
And as for Waterview, thats a completion, of a long halted project, that civic pride demands be completed, rather than market demand.. and it still took years for work to restart!
Toronto is indeed going through a growth spurt , that is hard to find comparison, and the underpinnings are even more confused..... Many such rebirth's of city's, occur after periods of great war, and empirical growth, a gathering of resources... and thus a king will rebuild his capital.... Even New York in the 20's has a lot to do with the wealth of the post war industrialists!!! This has no such inertia.....
But rather, seems based on a global confidence, in our stability, openness, and honesty!! ( Clarity in finance and the banking system!) Almost a reward for our foreign policy, and goodwill, ..in combination with growth and immigration..... EXCITING TIMES, THAT ARE HISTORIC, IN SPITE OF ALL THE GREEN GLASS GROANING!! Many of todays buildings will become surprising classics, within 20 years. Many GREAT towers were lambasted upon arrival, only to become heritage peices..... ( Not saying Uptown here, or Couture.but SL? 1 Bloor?? FS!)

What defines "our towers"? Are you stating all Canadian towers are low quality and ugly, or was that just a swipe at Toronto?
The majority of American cities are not experiencing condo construction booms like our cities are. It would be comparing apples to oranges to compare office to residential architecture. I think overall Canadian residential design compares quite well to American, and other parts of the world (outside of Europe). I've seen condos in Chicago and Miami, and there's a lot of ugly ones. The only exception would be NYC, but those projects are mostly high end luxury condos which can command world class starchitecture. For the most part, Toronto condos are mid-market and investor fueled. Considering we're selling cheap condos I think the designs are fairly consistent in quality.

Is it just a coincidence that the only 5 high quality towers you can think of happen to also be the 5 tallest towers (save Trump) that have topped out in Toronto so far during this boom?
Is it that among the other 250+ towers that have been completed in Toronto since the boom began, you think that they're all low quality and ugly, or are you just not really aware of any of the new towers outside the tallest handful?

Out of anything that is topped out/completed or at least have cladding on them, they are the only ones I think are actual quality towers and not clones. Though I really do love X condo and should have added it to that list for sure.
Telus is terrible. Sorry but I just hate it. I also kind of like the look of the college park twins but from what I've seen the materials look pretty low quality.
and I totally overlooked One King West. That is probably one of my top 10 favorites in the world. Very beautiful elegant building for sure. Just forgot about it as it was one of the first ones built in this boom.
and what the hell? Why the accusations of taking a swipe at Toronto? Just because the developers there put up cloned boxes doesn't mean I'm hating on the city. Obviously I was talking about "our towers" in the context of Toronto, since I currently live right outside the city(moving to Calgary tomorrow), and this entire conversation is about Toronto and whether or not at least half the towers built in this boom there are shit boxes. You guys don't think they suck, I do. The end?
Just because I don't like the shitty design standards(which isn't only centered on Toronto of course) doesn't mean I hate this mega-boom. Regardless of anything, a new residential/commercial building is better than a brownfield or a parking lot.

I've seen to other cities around the world with large amounts of residential highrises such as Hong Kong, other Chinese cities, Manila, Vancouver, Miami, Panama City, Brazilian cities, etc. When you have many (ie. hundreds of) towers going up at the same time period you're bound to have design element similarities and repetition. Every one of those cities I mentioned feature repetitiveness so when put in context I personally don't find what is going up in Toronto to be that bad.
It's fine if you don't like them, but for the most part I find the "boxes" to be of fair consistent quality. I've enjoyed much of the construction boom in the past decade, and how it has enhanced the downtown area and urban realm.
I study and record Toronto's current developments extensively so I know which architects and developers are good and bad. There is generally a noticeable difference in quality between the standard stereotypical box (ie. Casa, Burano) and the green glass condos that litter the waterfront. The main problem I have with recent new additions are cheap faux historicism creations and crappy suburban green glass schlock like this being built downtown: http://www.emporis.com/building/waterparkcity-toronto-canada

Therein lies the problem. I have the utmost confidence to say that you are deluding yourself when it comes to your design standards. You tend to dismiss quality over it not being "note-worldy". Any plebeian shares a similar manufactured stratospheric standard.

I remember when the 11-30 thread was made to get more cities other then Toronto in a list.

I wanted to get Montreal and Edmonton on the list.

Big 4 including Burnaby, since they are just beginning to enter a Mississauga-style boom, even though they're less than a third the size.

Agreed. That's why I created the construction and proposal lists for Canada outside of Toronto... as it's kinda lame the all we see is 90% one city in such a vast country. Those lists include 5 - 6 cities and everyone can still see Toronto everywhere else.
Then everyone freaked out on me for wanting to see a tiny bit of... diversity? Meh. :)

Those threads are still around. I'm genuinely curious as to why people don't post in them more.

People usually don't look past the last 20 most recently active threads. That's prolly why.

I tried posting in them a couple times, I liked them.
The 11 to 30 is kind of a funny list right now, it is all Toronto, except 1 Calgary and 2 Burnaby, just strikes me as kind of funny that Burnaby is one of only 3 cities on this list, and twice.

That's why I created the Canadian City proposals thread. It doesn't need to be tall to be posted.
