Vantage Pointe notwithstanding, it's a pretty good location. It's only a couple blocks away from 17th Ave, a big park, and a 5-minute walk from the CBD. Oh, and there are two big grocery stores (Safeway and Co-op) within 2 or 3 blocks.

No, Edmundston is the Thunder Bay. Moncton is the Los Angeles of New Brunswick. Unfortunately, New Brunswick is also the New Brunswick of Canada.
Still, I bet if you went there I bet you'd be amazed by the running water, electricity, etc. ;)
I was comparing Northern Ontario to New Brunswick, not Ontario as a whole.

Boris, that one's in Dorchester Square- it has post tension cabling (caveat emptor- this always increases condo fees and makes it REALLY important that reserve fund studies are done as scheduled); and because so many of its units are rentals, it wasn't CMHC insured- that might have changed by now of course. But I had a friend who lived there and I thought it was a nice building, from the inside at least.

Good to know. Needless to say, I am both unfamiliar with the building and the significance of post-tension cabling, but it should make for an interesting read later on. It's a shame that the page on MLS doesn't show the interior. The location, as I have stated, is IMHO pretty nice.

I know the building... it's just down the street from my place.
THe CMHC crooks still won't insure a post tension building, which means that the purchaser will need to come up with the full minimum 25% down payment on the condo.
There's nothing inherently wrong with post tension construction, but if the cabling does need to be replaced it can be very costly, which would probably mean fairly high special assesments for the owners in the building, as virtually no condo building has the type of reserve fund to cover those costs.
My building is slab & block, and prices for a 1 bedroom are about the same as that... $240 for a 1 bedroom, $280 for a 2 bedroom. My 2 bedroom place will be for sale shortly.

The decline in quality building materials in Canadian cities over the last couple of decades is nothing but frightening. We have the vinyl siding in Ontario (barf), the 0.5cm thick stucco of the prairies (mold waiting to happen), and BC's ever-popular "Ghetto Brick" (http://www.lestercat.net/house_03/archives/2005/08/ghetto_brick.php). I will never buy a single-family home unless it has 4 sides made of brick or stone (or titanium). It's expensive, but in my opinion well worth the extra cost.

Not Quite, you can still afford to buy a 1400sqft 1989 built, 3 bedroom home, with a developed walk out basement in Signal Hill for around $470,000. In cougar ridge you can get something similar without walkout, but newer (2003 and up) for around the same.
Something like that weird "garage+a little home" can be had in some of the less expencive areas for around $400. Personaly, you get a lot more for your money in an area like signal hill than you would in those "less expencive areas" for one thing, downtown is only 15 minutes away, 25 during rush hour. and there the WLRT is going to go right beside Signal hill in the near future.

That is the house in Greater Vancouver selling for less that $250,000.
Any houses built in the early 30s here have insulbrick. It's really sad looking. There is one house in the south end of Port Arthur that is just absolutely pathetic. If it was on the market it would be worth less than 10,000$ guaranteed.
@ clynnog: That isn't my house, a friend of mine was looking up the Youtube video of Thunder Bayers amazed at a large porcupine (Look up "Thunder Bay largest porcupine" on Youtube. You won't regret it.) and found it, and was appalled at how disgusting it was.
The TV is probably part of an incentive to get professionals to move here. If you go through the mls listings you'll probably find many houses that include TVs, all appliances, or even fully furnished and finished basements, for similar prices to those which exclude such things. It's a city initiative, I think? A local guy is doing a similar thing with a house near my apartment, he built a two car garage and will fully furnish it and everything to lure someone up. It'll probably be the most expensive house in the neighbourhood when it's done! :haha: (though for all its faults, it can be a very pretty neighbourhood at times. :P)

All the older homes in my neighborhood, including mine were built in 1951. They are concrete block construction from the ground to the roof. The exterior is solid brick on all 4 sides and the interior is the normal 2x4 constructed walls, so essentially the houses have 3 layers - brick exterior, concrete block in the middle and then the 2x4 walls inside. These are solid well built houses.
Unfortunately, because of the location of this neighborhood and the depth of the lots (161 feet), many are being torn down and replaced with monster houses made of, well, basically paper, that are selling from 800K to over a million. Just about every older home around here that sells is gone the next day. Just sad.
That thing for $13k it's definetely not a house!!!
Of course not. You're really just paying for the land. Whoever buys it will probably by the house beside it as well and turn that thing into a garage.

The most important parts of a solid, well built house have little to nothing to do with how the exposed exterior walls are clad. That comes down to personal choice and aesthetics.
If you truly want a quality well built home, it's gotta have the basics done right first. Spend your money on a well built foundation designed and inspected by professionals. Get the framing inspected before it's insulated, and most importantly get your vapour barrier properly inspected before anything is closed up on the interior.
Couple all this with a good design and reputable builder and you can probably clad your house with tyvek and still be better off than a buying a house built in your typical newer suburb that is clad with any kind of "exotic" material.

Well its a museum of itself. We're a buyers market right now. Houses are cheap. Except for the one in this thread, obviously.
And Thunder Bay has quite a few houses like that, though that one is the biggest and has an amazing setting. Maudslay Court is across the street, a 96 year old apartment building. If I had a million dollars, I'd buy it and restore it to its former glory. Like that manor, it has river frontage. It's such a beautiful, peaceful place, and so close to downtown.

Nicko's off on this one, DT Montreal also has plenty of manors, think Sherbrooke street.:koko:
I know that, but this manor look like no where. Maybe it's just the picture!
The downtown of a city is the most dense part with a lot of peoples and that manor look like it is no where.
Did you see the picture of the five story building located across the street from it that I posted?? :) Beside that five storey building across from that manor is a seven storey building! (It's pink. Thunder Bay has many pink buildings.)
http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/6033/s1010019ou7.jpg
Here it is in Google Maps (http://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=48.440469,-89.217653&spn=0.00189,0.003841&t=h&z=18). Take a look around. :) That place has a huge lot with river frontage and is separated from the street by a pretty good amount of hedges and trees. It was designed that way to maintain its peacefulness in the middle of the city.
Why don't you move Vid, since you hate T-B so much :haha:?
I like Thunder Bay. It's the Thunder Bayers I don't like. :)
I gotta get a picture of the Manors at the corner of High and Red River and the one by St. Joe's. It's a nursing home now, and is one of the largest houses in the city.

I bet that property is within a floodplain.
No, it's in Port Arthur. That area never floods because it's a fast flowing creek right by the lake. Even if we did get a lot of rain, it would spill over and flood the area behind me when I took that picture, not those buildings. (Though erosion may be a factor?)
Fort William is in a floodplain but with the McIntyre Floodway there are no real problems. The only thing that gets damaged in floods regularly is the Old Fort, and that's because they built it on the part of the river that is actually supposed to flood regularly.
If you passed grade 6 geography, you'll know why this (http://www.fwhp.ca/homepage.html) being here (http://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=48.344527,-89.358201&spn=0.015146,0.030727&t=k&z=15) is a bad idea.
edit: I just found this: a neat little eco-friendly house in Scoble (http://www.thunderbayhouses.com/houses/10rabbit/index.asp). Only 115,000$.

Detroit is such a bargain. Is that the state of things in America?

The Detroit houses look like bargains on paper. But when your realtor picks you up in an armoured personnel carrier to take you to see it, you'll realize it's not such a bargain.

^ Well, that's not ugly, but here's a real bargain in St. John's, not that ugly either. Prices range from around this to above a million of course. One of the best bargains in Canada, no crime infested run down areas here. You couldn't get a bathroom in Vancouver for that price.

If that wasn't wall-to-wall, it would fit in very well in Thunder Bay. :)

$239,000 in Edmonton will get you an older bi-level in Millwoods or an updated 1940's bungalow in Alberta Avenue

The cheapest single family dwelling in Edmonton is $148,000 for a bulldozer special in Beverly.

One of these things is not like the others... one of these things is severely misplaced! :uhh:

^ There are only 3 important things in Toronto real estate:
1) location
2) location
3) location
^^ a house in Toronto for only $173,000?? THAT is what's out of place!

That is about what you'd pay for a similar house in a reasonable neighborhood here in Belleville...prices are very high all over Canada it seems.
In some of Rochester, NY's edgier areas you can pick up a place like that for about $30,000 USD.
Damn! Thats one small house... how can they even charge over 100,000 for it?
Its in downtown Toronto and Ellen DeGenerous is interested in it. The news report is in a TBTV promo for some news programme, I think it's Canada AM? You have to watch for it, they say "There aren't many houses you can hide behind a car" and then it goes on to something else. I think some chick saying she has slave children or something?
Sometimes I think they splice scenes in those promos on purpose. Nothing better to do up here, I guess. TBTV is fun.

For the same price in Kitchener, you could buy a 950 sq ft loft. Built in 1913 for the Breithaupt Leather Company, bought by the Greb Shoe Company in 1920, then purchased to produce electric motors in 1956. The building was converted to lofts during 2005-06.

Is that a wooden fence around the perimeter of this loft project? Was that intentional? :yuck:
Maybe that was taken during construction and the fence is gone now?
