I agree with Priller. Dallas has an impressive skyline, but the city itself is so different. (let me preface this with a "no offense intended to Dallas residents) Austin isn't as sterile... it has alot more character, and has much more of a small town feel among the residents... something I don't ever experience when I'm in Dallas...

:dancing: Man, I've been waiting for this for a LONG time. Thanks a bunch, KC! These are fantastic! Come back again in a year or so when several new buildings, a couple of 400 footers, 500 footers and even a 600 footer are up in the air.
By the way, check out KCgridlock's website to see the rest of the photos he took of Austin. I'm like a kid in a candy store with these. Haha

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A few notes and observations of what you can see.
In this shot you can see that they had turned the exterior lighting on AMLI on 2nd. On the end of the building near the top you'll notice a green light. I'm not sure if this is the extent of the lighting on this building. I would think there would be more. This is a new apartment building (225 feet with 18 floors) that is near completion. It's part of the booming 2nd Street District which will add hundreds of new residential units to the southern end of downtown and 245,000 square feet of retail space (so far).
http://www.urban-photos.com/gallery/albums/city_galleries/austin/austin_03_8241.jpg
Vid will like this photo since it shows one of his new favorite buildings in Austin. :D The building to the left is The Monarch. This is a new apartment tower in Austin's West End. It's also wrapping up construction. It's 323 feet with 29 floors. It's named The Monarch after the roof design which resembles the wings of a butterfly angled upwards. The taller building to the right of course is 360 Condominiums (563 feet to the spire, 473 feet to the roof with 44 floors). This is not only the new tallest building in Austin but is also the new tallest all residential building in Texas thanks to the spire. This building will only hold that title for a year however since The Austonian (683 feet with 56 floors) also in Austin, will be completed sometime late next year or early in 2010, it's already under construction.
http://www.urban-photos.com/gallery/albums/city_galleries/austin/austin_8988.jpg
Here you can see Altavida under construction to the left. This is a new apartment tower going up along 2nd Street. This building will be 412 feet tall with 37 floors. The brown building immediately to the right of it is 100 Congress. That building is 320 feet tall with 22 floors, it's office. Behind it and to the right you can just barely see a tower crane there. That is one of two cranes that is working on The Austonian which will be Austin's new tallest at 683 feet with 56 floors. It's all condominiums with retail. At that height it will put Austin ahead of Fort Worth for "tallest tallest" making it the tallest in the state outside of Houston and Dallas. It will also be one of the tallest all residential buildings in the US. Only a handful of cities will have taller ones. With 360 Condominiums Austin has already passed San Antonio.
http://www.urban-photos.com/gallery/albums/city_galleries/austin/austin_16_8983.jpg
Another closer view of the crane and construction site of The Austonian, (lower left).
http://www.urban-photos.com/gallery/albums/city_galleries/austin/austin_23_8947.jpg
This one shows the excavation work being done for the new Four Seasons Residences (lower right). This is a new 32-story condominium and apartment tower. Site plan info indicates it will be 394 feet tall. Completion is expected in 2010. At this point since it's broken ground before a few others, it should be our 8th tallest in 2010. One unique fact about this building is that it will sport the highest rooftop swimming pool in Texas at almost 400 feet above the street.
http://www.urban-photos.com/gallery/albums/city_galleries/austin/austin_33_8929.jpg
This shot shows the growing Waterfront District on the right side of the pic. The City of Austin rezoned this old downtown neighborhood for highrise development. Since then 3 new highrises have taken off. All residential, the tallest one seen here, Legacy @ Town lake, an apartment building under construction, will be 339 feet with 31 floors. This is one of the new towers that will really help reshape Austin's skyline since it's about 8 blocks from the next 300 footer. Eventually this entire neighborhood, an area of about 21 acres will be developed with highrises. Another tower, a 29-story hotel and condominium tower is also proposed for this area, though news on it has been sketchy.
http://www.urban-photos.com/gallery/albums/city_galleries/austin/austin_39_8006.jpg
Photo showing Spring's red tower crane in the background (top center left). Some people are calling this building Austin's future version of Houston's Williams Tower. Design-wise it actually resembles Dallas' Bank of America Plaza a bit, but since it's away from "the pack", it'll really stand out in Austin's West End. It's still downtown of course. The building will be 434 feet tall with 42 floors. It's all condominiums with retail.
http://www.urban-photos.com/gallery/albums/city_galleries/austin/austin_40_8014.jpg
Expansion of Darrell K. Royal Texas Memorial Stadium. The stadium was originally built in 1924, though the original sections have all been demolished. The current expansion will take seating capacity to just over 90,000. This shot also shows the enormity of the godzillatron on the stadium's south side. It's the largest jumbotron of its kind in the world. 55 feet long and the entire structure is just over 100 feet tall.
http://www.urban-photos.com/gallery/albums/city_galleries/austin/austin_8045.jpg
Thanks again to KCgridlock for coming to Austin. These are great because there haven't really been any new aerials of downtown since most of these towers topped out. The last aerials I saw were Mopacs' shots he took in mid-2006 other than just a few pics here and there. So these were much appreciated! :cheers:
Yep. And there's more on the way. More 400 footers and 500 footers. Tomorrow, the newspaper is releasing a rendering for a new 30-story office tower in downtown that will be designed by none other than Cesar Pelli. The tower will be part of a ~465,000 square foot project that will include a new home for the Austin Museum of Art. It's supposed to break ground next year and be completed by 2011. This would be the first major office tower since the completion of the Frost Bank Tower in 2004.
After sometime in 2011, here's how the list should look. This is if nothing else is proposed from now until then.
One 700 footer? As long as it doesn't get canceled.
One 600 footer
Four 500 footers
Five to seven 400 footers
Eighteen 300 footers
Twenty two 200 footers
One hundred twelve 100 footers (taller than 115 feet).
You can see it in this photo. See the midrise hotel midway up the photo on the right side of the picture? In front of it there's a red building with a white roof. That was the Real World Austin "house". It's since been turned into a restaurant.
http://www.urban-photos.com/gallery/albums/city_galleries/austin/austin_33_8929.jpg
Forgot to mention this. But those are NOT mobile homes in the lower left. They're RV/travel trailers. There's actually two RV parks there along Barton Springs Road overlooking the skyline. One of them contains a Pecan grove. Supposedly it's the last such Pecan grove in Texas. Some of the trees are over 150 years old and are protected. The two RV parks are unique in that they're just across the river from downtown. You have to have a reservation to park there and there's quite a waiting list. People come to Austin from all over the US and park there. There's also local residents who actually live there. One of these RV parks is slated to be redeveloped with condominiums in two 75 foot, 6-story buildings that will contain restaurant space along Barton Springs Road. Barton Springs Road is home to Austin's "Restaurant Row" which is a stretch of some of the city's most famous restaurants. This is where the Bush twins got in trouble for underage drinking a few years back when they were going to UT.
Hey Kevin,
Where can one find these kinds of projections? I knew about some of the bigger ones, but hadn't heard about all the others.
Thanks for the info! If Austin's skyline grows that much, I may cancel my plans to move to Houston and stay here instead. The main reason I had planed to move was to be closer to a lot of nice architecture. But if Austin satisfies my desire to live among a lot of good architecture, I'll just stay put!
I like the Austin Skyline. I went through back in March, April on my way to Laredo. At night, on the weekend the city really looks alive. The 35 interstate freeway that runs past downtown is unique. With the planned buildings, I would say that the skyline might past San Antonio in the future.
Passing San Antonio is a done deal... passing Dallas may be on the horizon.
Hey Kevin,
Where can one find these kinds of projections? I knew about some of the bigger ones, but hadn't heard about all the others.
Thanks for the info! If Austin's skyline grows that much, I may cancel my plans to move to Houston and stay here instead. The main reason I had planed to move was to be closer to a lot of nice architecture. But if Austin satisfies my desire to live among a lot of good architecture, I'll just stay put!
You can look up all the info in this thread:
Be sure to check out the individual building threads also. Just scroll down to the bottom of the rendering post.
Don't know about that one. There maybe some plans for downtown Dallas in the upcoming years. Still, Austin will be firmly in the number 3 spot in Texas very shortly.
There was news today of a revised plan on one of the proposed towers. The building had been proposed to be 705 feet with 47 floors. Well, that was almost 3 years ago. Today the developer says he's planning two towers. One would be 830 feet tall with 70 floors. It would have 300 hotel rooms and 200 condos. The 2nd tower would be a 30-story office tower with retail and a 1,000 space parking garage. On an adjacent block a 1,200 space parking garage would be built over 8,500 square feet of retail and restaurant space.
Both towers would go up on the same block as the black tower seen here. That building would stay, but the banking hall, a lowrise building and a parking garage on that block would be demolished. The 30-story office tower would front Congress Avenue next to the black building seen here. The taller tower would be behind them. If built, this would be the 6th tallest building in Texas.
The office tower would probably block the view of the black building from this angle. The 70-story tower would be to the right of the black building. Anyway, this was the 3rd highrise announcement in a week. Two other projects, another 30-story office tower designed by Cesar Pelli, and an 18-story Westin Hotel, also with 300 rooms.
Kevin, where will the Marriot go in that picture ? Thanks.
In the 2nd photo I reposted above, the Marriott will go up on the block between that gray tower that's next to the Frost Bank Tower, and that tall brown tower to the left of that one.
The Marriott project has been reworked though. Originally it was supposed to be three towers in one complex. A 26-story tower, a 15 and an 11-story building. Then they eliminated the 11-story building and bumped the main tower to 34 floors. Now the 15-story tower is being eliminated from the project. The number of hotel rooms however has not dropped. It'll still have 1,000 rooms making it the largest hotel in Austin, and likely the tallest too. They haven't mentioned a new height since eliminating the 15-story building, but I would imagine this would likely increase its height to 40 floors or more.
My God! That's going to be one centrally-located behemoth. I thought they were going to tuck it away near the convention center.
Nope, right on Congress Avenue. It's only three blocks from the convention center though. It'll actually be the first hotel to break ground on Congress Avenue in about 87 years. The last one was the Stephen F. Austin Hotel in about 1922. I'm really hoping they come up with a better design though, because the 26-story design was awful.
Hope it has a goodly bit of retail too.
My brother has lived in Austin, San Antonio, and Houston and he says that Austin was by far the best place he has ever lived. He says he wants to move back and after going to Austin, I can see why. Austin is a very nice city. Thanks for the pics.
Though two entirely different cities, Austin kinda reminds me of Columbus, OH.
The freeway interchange photos are fun! :)
^^^ Good call. I went to OSU and now live in Austin. They are quite similar, though Austin is growing much much more quickly.
The highway structures and overall size/industry are quite similar. Lot more bars, etc in dtown austin. More historic neighborhoods in C-bus.
