A lot of mechanical penthouses are quite poorly done.
I'd rather see a properly integrated mechanical penthouse than the blank walls of one highlighted by floodlights.
Internal lighting usually works well (Residences on Georgia).

Worst of the bunch is The Bentley - massive ugly concrete box (not lit luckily), Paris Place at International Village, or Jardine's Lookout.

Well integrated: Mondrian I & II, Domus, Eden, Miro, Brava, Genesis, Grace, Space, L'Hermitage.

The most recently lit one I've noticed is the Silver Sea (Concord Pacific next to Granville Bridge) - changing colours like at the Edgewater Casino.

I'm not normally a grammar Nazi, but 'lighted tops'? I believe the proper way to write it would be 'lit tops'. Lighted means to fall or descend.

Anyway, I think lit tops/crowns are great. Unfortunately, they get turned off pretty quickly on condo towers after a strata forms. No one wants to pay the extra electrical bill. The Melville is a perfect example.
Here in Shanghai it's all the rage. I always keep my eyes open to see what lighting schemes the new buildings come up with.

its nice to see when driving down hwy #1 at least

they stick out a lot more than downtown as they don't get lost among the forest of towers

wouldn't doubt it - they got the skytrain stations art installation lights turned off

i haven't seen them on in a long while

before the towers went up i think is when i last saw them on

cause you used to be able to see them well from hwy #1

and driving west down lougheed now nothing

Even the William Farrell Building (Telus) at Robson & Seymour had a fibre optic lighting system with changing colours when it was renovated - it was functional for maybe a year or less. It wasn't garish, (the lights were focussed on the building from each major mullion junction) so the condos across the street would not have been directly shone into.

Lighted and lit mean the same thing. Like spelled and spelt.

I think "illuminated" would maybe be more descriptive.
