Winnipeg to dim lights for Earth Hour
Last Updated: Wednesday, February 20, 2008 | 5:35 PM ET
CBC News

Winnipeg's mayor wants the city to go dark for one hour this spring, as part of Earth Hour, a global event being held to symbolize commitment to fighting climate change.

The City of Winnipeg will officially participate in the March 29 event, Mayor Sam Katz announced Wednesday.

"I challenge all Winnipeggers to turn off their lights for Earth Hour and show their support by engaging in this global issue," Katz said in a release.

"This symbolic gesture offers an incredible opportunity to educate our youth about the importance of environmental stewardship and preserving our environment."

Civic buildings on Main Street will turn out their lights between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. CT that Thursday night.

Lights in police headquarters, the civic and library parkades and the downtown skywalk will stay on for safety reasons, officials said.

Last March, Sydney, Australia dimmed its skyline when residents, businesses and the local government took part in the first Earth Hour event, which asked people to think about cutting their energy use.

Cities taking part in this year's event, organized by the World Wildlife Foundation, include Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Vancouver, as well as Tel Aviv, Copenhagen, Phoenix and Chicago.

I would like to say every little step helps, but in all regards there is little we can do now to stop this thing. 2007 was the warmest year on record and weather patterns this year have been very abnormal. Once the cycle is thrown off balance it's pretty hard to get it back into motion. We might as well go down with a fight though.

Or you can just get out of the city for on a clear night.

Tonight their was a lunar eclipse, so I tried taking a few shots, but it is -25C and the wind is terrible.

The camera picked up the light on the dark side, but it turned red. Here's the best shot, but not great.

I'd like to say that this seems like a good idea but, no, actually, it's pretty much an empty gesture.

Okay, so we "dim the lights" for an hour. Obviously this is symbolic at best. Nevertheless, if we do this, that simply provides Manitoba Hydro with more power to sell to somebody else. I have no problem with this I just don't see the point. It's a pointless inconvenience basically. Like saying "I'm going to whip myself with a noodle to honour the victims in Darfur." Uh...yeah, okay. That might make YOU feel good by relieving some guilt or something but it does absolutely nothing for anybody else.

Isn't most cities in Canada doing the same? I know Hamilton will.

How about this: the next person to post should pick out the mistakes each time 1ajs makes a spelling error. Then, highlight these words. 1ajs, you can than take a look at these errors and perhaps try spelling a few of those words in the correct way. Like a learning game. I have bad grammar also. Somebody could fix my mistake. In fact we should do this for every poster. In fact I propose that if this idea takes off, we rename this forum forum.skyscraperspellingpage.com (or sssp). We would all benefit from the added learning experience. We will become masters of the English language. Let me be the first:

I would laugh if you would be able to see anything. I definitly know my neighbors down the street will be setting up with their teliscopes, that's for sure.... or in the park. I definitely will set up for a tripod shot of the sky if its not cloudy. Hmm so many photog ideas.

^lol...you spelled telescope wrong and you missed an apostrophe in "it's" at the end of your lesson.

Don't get me wrong mind you, it happens that I agree he's in dire need of spelling lessons. We've just sorta gotten used to it in the Manitoba threads. He contributes a lot otherwise.

Thanks!! See we're all lernin'

Whoops, I mean learning.

Hopefully this will take off. (Turning lights off for 1 hour). But cutting back on your electricity consumption everyday would be a lot better. We could all save so much if we just remember little things. Make it a habit to turn off the lights when you leave the room, or just turn off the T.V. when you are not watching, or better yet, go for a walk instead of turning on the computer and logging on to skyscraperpage.com.

There's a loophole on that last part dennis. People who have laptops will walk outside, and go to a location where there's a wireless connection, and BOOM! Skyscraperpage.com!

Nice ThinkPad, I've got a T60

Are you using your AC adapter in that photo? Is it difficult to find a usable power outlet in Downtown Winnipeg?

Toronto did it last year, but it was done in the afternoon, and it was only done for about 10 minutes. Any longer and it would have cost the economy of any city during working hours big bucks. It's a good idea but I for one won't take part. I already do more then the average Joe to limit my impact on the environment, and would rather another ten minute blackout. One like last year to force those in the workplace to take part and do something whom otherwise never would. I plan on turning my lights off around midnight for a full 18 or so hours that night.

I think it's a good idea if only for symbolic reasons. Of course over the long run it won't make much difference if people insist on driving over-sized, novelty vehicles like SUV's and "Duelies."
