Had to do a project for school involving some photo taking. I havent been to philly in a while and I was amazed how good the Comcast Center looked. I was first opposed of the building but now seeing it in person, my thoughts have completely changed. Definatly a great addition.

holy sh!t!
This thread is awesome.
At first I thought it was going to be a photo thread of some dude to lazy to get out of his car taking pictures of Philly almost causing a wreck. Then I was totally shocked in the wonder of great photos of center city.
BTW. I love the photos in the car too!

That there is City Hall. Some people thought it was a monstrosity when it was first built. The statue is William Penn. It is huge. It looks like they did a job cleaning it. They was in the process of doing that when I worked a few blocks from there.
I heard that it was in the Philly ordinance that no building could not be taller then William Penn or something. Then they finally had to do away with it in the 80s to finally allow skyscapers to come in. This is hearsay. Maybe somebody from Philly could verify it better.

Ah, thanks. I kind of figured it was a city hall, but that's where my investigation ended.
Looks beautiful.

That was never a law. It was just tradition. A tradition that was broken in the 80's. It's still a problem, though. Try to build anything taller than 25 stories anywhere in Center City that's not downtown and get ready for civic groups harassing the shit out of you with lawsuits.
Try to build anything taller than 8 floors anywhere else in Center City and prepare yourself for the same crap.
Try to go over 50 Ft. in any neighborhood outside of Center City and get ready to be crucified.
Don't get me wrong, this is a great city, but the people who live here . . .

Manayunk and Old City are big nightlife neighborhoods.

Philly is more pub than club, for sure, and just about every neighborhood has it's own pub scene.
A lot of the bar scene and much of the restaurant scene takes place in converted rowhouses with the better places occupying two buildings side-by-side. The clubs are no different so that scene here is really intimate.
Manayunk has two clubs that i know of and the rest are of the gastropub or bar variety. It's really heavy on the weekend warrior, 20-somethings from the western suburbs.
Old City has a lot of everything and is pretty diverse in terms of establishments. It has some of the best restaurants in the city. The only club i frequent there is the Khyber. On the weekends it can get chaotic with the weekend warriors. At 2am when everything shuts down, the police normally close the streets because the crowds are too much for the narrow sidewalks.
South St. - South St. has pubs all the way up and down and a few decent restaurants as well. The eastern end can get a little weekend warrior/suburban on Friday/Saturday nights.
Northern Liberties - full of great gastropubs. Silk City and the 700 Club used to be the places to go any night of the week but Silk City has been redone and is now geared toward a higher income clientele and the weekend warriors from Old City got wiff of the more laid back scene in NoLibs and have taken over 700 on the weekends.
Fishtown - it's a fledgling pub/dance scene but it's the place you have to go now if you want to get away from the dude uniform of the untucked dress shirts, $300 blue jeans and popped collars.
University City - there's a little bit of everything out there. Mostly between 35th & 40th and Chestnut to Baltimore Ave. Lots of college kids.
South Philly - No clubs. A lot of pubs. It's a shame really. The imbalance is something i hope to remedy in the near future.
BTW - Old City and South St. are the only places that are in Center City. Also in Center City, on the blocks just north of Rittehouse Square you'll find a lot of pubs/bars/ and a few clubs.

I hated the Comcast Center when I first saw the renderings five or six years ago. The finished (or nearly finished) product, however, kicks total ass.

You also forgot the Gayborhood when discussing Center City Nightlife. The area from 12th to Broad St. south of Sansom is very busy and also has a number of straight clubs, bars, and restaurants too.

You're right. I would make that 10th to Broad and from Chestnut to Lombard. There are a few "straight" bars on Walnut and Sansom but really, the only time i forget i'm in the gayborhood is when i'm at McGillin's, Fergie's, or Ludwig's.
I've been to Pure a few times for 'Making Time' and friends of mine used to dj Sal's every Tuesday. A different friend used to bartend at Key West - gay, black trannies . . . in leather. It's a crazy place.
Point being that most places in the gayborhood lean one way or the other but there are few places (12th Air Command, Key West, and Sisters being the exceptions) that are strictly "gay" or "straight".

I use to always go the the Irish Pub on 12th and Walnut. People said that was in the "gayborhood" as Philly people called it. Fergies, and Mcgillians were cool. I can't remember Ludwig's but I am sure I stopped there on one of those drunk Philly nights.
"Philly is more pub than club, for sure, and just about every neighborhood has it's own pub scene"
That was alright with me. The music venues and pubs in philly were great.
