No nonsense here guys, just a glimpse at the "other" side of DTLA, the side not hit by sanitized glass & steel skyscrapers and coffee shops sprouting up. Also a glimpse into Boyle Heights....(you'll read more about it further down)

However, amidst the gruff and grit hipsters venture into this neighborhood to occupy new lofts in the never-ending wave of gentrification across the nation

That's it for now. I hope you enjoyed this set, which attempts to shed some light into one of the largest Mexican communities in the city with the most Mexicans outside of Mexico.

Chale, Holmes!! Good stuff there. My dad used to always tell me about East Los when he moved there from mexico. That would have been my barrio if he didn't move to New York and marry my Rican mom. But it's always good to see la raza in these pics.

lots of good stuff here. I like how Taco King is painted to look like a taco truck! You would think things should be the other way around!

You know the rules:brand new Escalade-crummy house

So true... It's sad...

Very nice pics, but please be super careful when you go into these predominant latino areas and snap photos of the locals. Being that you are an African American, and with all the senseless random violence between Latinos and African Americans in LA, you should be cautious. I know you're at the age where we feel invincible, but I don't want to see you in the LA Times tommorow morning as the next victim!

There is grit for sure in East LA, but the entire neighborhood isn't all bad looking. For sure you will know it isn't the westside of LA, but there are a number of tiddy looking neighborhoods. I actually find Boyle Heights, and East LA quite interesting, and many of these areas are full of street life.

Sure there are some areas I wouldn't go around snapping photos in , but the majority of them I would feel safe doing so.

You can roll your eyes, but I'm just speaking from what I see in the LA Times and on the news. There's nothing wrong with being cautious. I'm not saying he has to avoid these areas, I'm just saying to be careful with the camera.

K.O.T.H., thanks for showing a side of LA that we may hear about in the news or see re-inacted in movies but will likely never visit. Keep up the great work! Thanks!

Nice. I mean it's so generally a mexican city that they don't need to call it "Little Mexico".
