View Full Version : Austin Video Thread

I guess I might as well create a city video thread for Austin too.

On November 10, 2006, a fire broke out on the 2nd floor above the shopping mall of a UT dorm building. The building is 27 floors of residential dorms and 2 levels of shopping. It's Austin's 6th tallest building.

The fire started on the pool deck area. I never heard what the cause was. It started at 3 am, and was reported by a resident of the building and a passersby on the street. 930 students call the building home in what is Austin's tallest dorm.

Story from the Daily Texan (UT's newspaper).

In 1999 Intel Corporation started construction on their new 10-story, 400,000 square foot office building in downtown. But as the tech bust rolled around in 2000/2001 they halted construction on the building. Plans were to just put it on hold and continue later. But that never happened, and for 7 years Austin had a 5-story stump in the middle of downtown. So on February 25, 2007 it was imploded. Plans are to build a new federal courthouse on the site of where the Intel "shell" once stood.

A trip up through and to the top of the old control tower at Mueller. Occasional glimpses of Mueller construction and a couple of brief views of the skyline from a distance at the end.

So glad you posted that. I really hope they restore the tower and open it up to the public as an observation tower.
