Here's a sticky thread for people to post whatever interesting photos they happen to find (please credit them). I figured this would be useful for single photos not worth creating an entire thread for.

As much as I feel threatened by crazy NIMBY talk, I have to feel good knowing that this city will have to eventually press inward as energy prices rise. I'm kinda pissed about the Bedford fast ferry, it practially deals with subway-like distances.

TBH, with the rate that energy prices are increasing, I'm surprised that theres still people out there who aren't open to densification, and still want to see this city sprawl endlessly. Everbody is crying about how much it costs to fuel their car, but when a high rise is proposed, many of those same people seem to be up in arms about it.
But I too feel good knowing that it will have to happen. It should be happening right now. Oil and fuel prices are expected to DOUBLE in just the next 4 years alone.

I noticed those as well. There are some nice older ones that show the area around South/Barrington.
The two photos above show just how bad those surface lots are. The one on Dresden Row should have been filled in with something by now. The loss of parking is no excuse because it can go underground or into structured parking in the middle of the lot. Ideally the scale of new development would be comparable to the Charterhouse or Martello.

I was wondering if anyone had or has links to photos of some of the buildings from the 70's or 80's under construction? In particular I'd love to see Purdy's, 1801 Hollis, Fenwick and Maritime Centre and what it was like pre-expansion, any others would be cool to see too. I spent all afternoon searching but came up mostly empty handed, I did come across this postcard which I think shows Maritime Centre pre-expansion:

Interesting.. 1993 seems plausible. Summit Place is there but there are still the old smoke stacks.
It's a little sad to think that the picture would be almost the same today. Not much has changed downtown.

Hm, the crane in the foreground of the first picture might be Admiralty Place, which was completed a little before 1993...the Central Trust (?) logo is still on 1801 Hollis, and I believe that company went under in the early or mid 90s..
Agreed, someone123, the only overt difference is the casino, possibly one of my least favourite buildings in the city

What? Maybe it's just because I spend so much time there, but I like the building.

Definitely not Admirality Place, that building would be off to the left, far out of the picture. That has to be Alderney Gate, and the picture definitely looks to be taken from one of the upper floors of Queen Square, if not even the roof. The view from my floor is identical to that photo.
So if that's Alderney Gate under construction, that photo has to be around 1990 or so.
kph06
Apr 21, 2009, 5:33 PM
Yeah, definately Alderney Gate, I was a little bored at work and went on google earth and lined up the Halifax buildings the way they are seen above and the line cuts right through Queens Square and Alderney Gate. I figure the other crane on the Halifax side must be the Homburg building by the citadel? It seems to line up properly and that is relatively new.

Whoops, I didn't notice this bit. I dunno, I don't really like anything about it. It's sprawling, the parkade is massive, and it's quite gaudy (IMO) architecturally.

Apr 21, 2009, 8:03 PM
Homburg? I think that is or was the North American Life Building. I thought that was built in 1986 or so. What about the Park Lane office building or City Centre Atlantic...?
hfx_chris
Apr 21, 2009, 10:04 PM
Probably. If you use kph06's trick and draw a line from Queen Square to Purdy's II, it goes right through Park Lane and City Centre Atlantic. The only significant building beyond that would be the Dickson Centre at the VG site, no idea when that building was constructed.

I don't mind the casino, I think it will look more attractive when it ages... especially when the copper oxidizes (at least they used real copper) completely on the domes. Just my opinion, it has a number of flaws, especially in its sprawling size... the space could have been allocated more efficiently.

I don't think they were taken from the top, as there is a rule that you have to be at least 10/12 feet back from the edge at all times (I *have* been to the top before a couple times myself). If you look, that white bit along the bottom right corner is one of the slanted facade bits below one of the balconies- if you look at the 2 side by side, the balcony levels on the top of tower 2 are level with the very top of tower 1.

The caption says "Commercial St.", but I know of no such street in Dartmouth. It looks like the bottom of Portland St to me. Regardless, it is pretty old-school.

Surprising how little things have actually changed in 50 years. Aside from the Holiday Inn/Metropolitan Place, and the Sportsplex replacing the Dartmouth Arena, not much is different (although the Dartmouth Shopping Ctr had quality stores back then).

That would be Alderney Drive today, with Dartmouth Cove straight ahead.
Alderney Gate would be on the right side of the street today. Jacobsons on the left is around the Alderney/Portland intersection, you can see the new RBC building and Nieforth Furniture up on the left side, and the trees of the Dartmouth Common in the foreground.

:previous: I enjoyed your photos. Could you tell me when the Crofton Uniacke House was built? It looks like an interesting building.

We need much tougher laws to let the cops toss graffiti vandals into jail. Halifax has a huge problem with this defacement.

I'm really starting to be fond of the historical photos in the community herald every week. For example here's this week. Its of the Beverbank Interchange.

And this one of the Ralston building site on Barrington from the 1950's.

I don't think that is the Ralston Bldg site. For one thing, it is on Hollis, not Barrington, and for another, it is very close to Salter St., which is not apparent in that photo.

^Well this was the description provided;
The vacant lot at the left of this photo is all that remained of the Queen Hotel, which had burned down sometime betore this shot was taken in the 1950s. The federal government was considering building a "new, modern federal building" at a cost of more than $1.5 million on the site of the fire and the property occupied by the then-condemned Halifax Hotel. If both sites were used, the building was to occupy more than two-thirds of the Hollis Street block between Sackville and Salter streets. Construction on the Ralston Building began in 1954

Yeah, that picture is of Hollis Street. The hotel burned down in 1939 though, and judging from those cars I think the photo was taken around that time.
There's an HRM page on the hotel fire: http://www.halifax.ca/archives/QueenHotelFire.html
Too bad that stretch of Hollis wasn't better preserved (Sackville to Bishop).

I found these interesting... shots of the interior of the Green Lantern restaurant circa 1941, courtesy of the NS Archives. This was on the main floor of the Green Lantern Building, better known as the Keith Building, on Barrington. This is the present site of Pogue Fado. I'd rather have this:

I saw those too. It is a different style but not terribly unlike a similar sort of place today. It would be interesting to see the old menus and prices.

It's funny you went on a picture taking walkabout the other day, because I was doing the exact same thing. I got home and was going to upload some of my photos to SSP and noticed you beat me to it. Btw, nice pics of the Rowe Building.
