You can pretend you're doing the tour in a Cobra, choose your colour, hop in and we'll race down Macleod to 22 X.

Zoom! It only took a minute to get to the turn off at Sheriff King Road and Spruce Meadows Trail (Hiway 22 X), now we have to wait and wait and wait to get the green left to turn light. All of a sudden, the dark clouds are moving in.

then the wind really picked up. Of course the area is a giant construction site so there is lots dirt and dust and lots of debris flying.

I like the red house. I found the Silverado colour palate to be a little dull, and it doesn't help that the weather changed and it was dark and gloomy looking.

It's funny how some of the new suburbs in Calgary look so similar to some of the new ones in Edmonton...

It's almost like things are similar between cities. I heard a rumour you guys are getting those Mustangs available later this year, too. :haha:

Blandness knows no borders.

However I do like how some of the houses have the garages in the back, where they should be.

Yeah that's the problem with new suburbs, they are so bland. What drives me nuts is the vinyl siding which up until a few years ago only came in light colours. It is good to see some darker colour houses getting built but I wish they build more with stucco and brick.

I love the burbs. All my friends get on me for being a young guy that decided to buy a place in the burbs rather than closer to the core, but every Friday I anticipate getting out of the core for the weekend.

Man I hate vinyl siding, I makes all the new neighborhoods look cheap IMO. I'd rather have stucco!
Nice shots though, I didn't realize Silverado was that built up, even though I live right near there.

It's a suburban curse.

By law in Alberta, if you live in the suburbs and don't want to drive an SUV, you're required to drive a gas-guzzling sports car instead.

I'm not a fan of the burbs myself, but you can't really blame the developers here. Face it, for the last 60 years North American families pretty much expect to have a single family home of their own almost as if it's some kind of human right. The developers are only responding to this demand.

Funny, I guess I shouldn't admit to you guys that I have a silver GT convertible in the driveway of my "snub-nose" house. And I love it.

About the siding though, and the "bland" colours - we thought exactly the same when we were building, and originally wanted a red siding...but, quickly found out that the "upgraded" colours (re: not beige, light beige, or grey) costs a couple grand more. Not exactly sure why, but that is the likely the reason most stick with the plain colours - spend the money inside, or just save it.

As for vinyl vs stucco - I do agree that the odd stucco house in Calgary seems to look better in a sea of vinyl, but if you check out the houses in Winnipeg - where all the new ones use stucco - you'll see how ugly that can be too. Besides, vinyl is much easier to take care of.

For those burb haters on here, take comfort in knowing these homes are definitely not built to last forever!

Or you're simply not allowed, due to architectural controls coming from the developer. We tried very hard to go with some of the darker colours, but were told they "weren't allowed" in our area. I was very willing to pay a couple grand more to have the house look a million times better (in my opinion anyway). We also couldn't get stucco at any price - the fire hazard of plastic gas is a real concern to me.

Such is life, I guess. There's nothing stopping us from ripping it all off and re-doing it however we like in the future though - it's just such a waste.

The stupid part is that less than a km away, in the same bloody neighbourhood, all of the houses are in darker tones - blues, greens, reds, you name it. But that's a different part of the subdivision or something.

Lunacy.

Lets see, my house is white siding with green wood (window frames, varanda (sp?)), our neighbours's is plywood (and has been for 18 years), another neighbour's is cedar siding, some blue, some yellow. I quite like not having any rules like that.

Agreed, if it would fit in our budget, I would have liked to get a different colour - but, for us the priorities were put on the inside. The "architectural controls" in any of these suburbs is a joke. Ours consisted of making sure someone else didn't pick the same colour (well, err, the exact same grey or beige that is), same rock, or same trim colour. It's very well possible that if you're the last to build on the street, you can end up with a blue house in green trim (well, not that bad, but you know what I mean)...unfortunately, they don't really explain these "controls" until after you sign.

Cold - I was half joking. Of course, they aren't built to last as long as most brick and mortar type structures, but they'll last as long as any other house. At their price point though, the land will likely be worth more than the structure in 40-50 years anyway. But, the tolerances for new homes does keep getting better - our new house is far more efficient than our last one that was only 8 years old.
