The camera was probably zoomed in. Also when you're up in the area where the picture was taken from, the mountains always seem to look bigger, especially close to sunset.

Yup same tracks. There is actually a little alcove on the cliff there, with a bench and a little stone barrier. Gives you a bit of a different view of the city than the usual Downtown views. You get to it be entering edworthy park from the top part within wildwood.

These two shots of Stephen Ave were taken from almost the same spot and angle (One block apart). The daytime one was taken from a point a block west of the nighttime one.
I really like how Stephen ave is like a chameleon with two different vibes to it. A daytime vibe and a night time vibe.

This may seem to be a dumb American Question:
But why do Canadian cities seem so much bigger then American cities of the same population?
Is it because people live more in the city itself?
I read in the last thread that Calgary is the same size of Rochester. (I looked it up on the net) It is about 1 million metro. That is a average American size metro. A American metro of 1 million doesn't look any bit as big as this. I am thinking mostly because we are suburbinite pigs.
Honest question.

That's a good question. My guess would be the city/metro thing. Calgary is even more unique, as it looks big for its size even when compared to other Canadian cities of a similar population.
What I have found with American cities during my visits is that the metro populations seem to be spread out quite a bit.
Take Salt Lake City for a example. It's close to the same metro population as Calgary, but its metro area seems to be way more spreadout.

I was thinking the opposite. Canadian cities seem that they need double the population to keep up to their American cousins of development. American cities are much grander than Canadian cities of the same pop. Calgary maybe an exception due it's a white collar city with extremely high average of office tower development sq. footage. I find it's the American infrastructure that far surpasses Canadian city development in terms of large road systems and and greater parcel development, industrial and such.

Thank you for your answers.
I lived in Denver for a few years. Calgary reminds me much of the same skyline, but Denver was a much bigger metro. Keep in mind, I never been to a actual Canadian city. I am determining this all from looking at photos from this thread and amongst others. However, on statistical information a city in Canada the metro size of Rochester, Ny, looks like Denver. Calgery looks much like Denver with the highrises, new cranes, etc. I really want to get a passport (We used to not need one till 9/11) and visit Canadian cities. It seems like you guys know how to defeat urban sprawl up there. If so, I am heading up to your country to find answers!

A very good question actually.
Actually Calgary City itself (about 250-300 sq miles) is about the same population as all of metropolitan Rochester (3000-4000 sq miles). Rochester is in reality a much smaller city than Calgary, but with a pretty large population in surrounding counties to bring the metropolitan population to over a million; Calgary and other major Canadian prairie cities are somewhat unique in that they have a very sparsely hinterland, thus the similarity in metro populations between Rochester and Calgary. You have a central city of ~1 million, metro population of ~1.2 million for Calgary, central city of ~250,000, metro population of ~1.1 million for Rochester (going by memory here - too lazy to check stats!)
The other, more minor, difference, is that Canadian metros are not as extensive in land area as US ones - Calgary's metro area covers probably half or less as much land area as most US million-ish metros.
Also, we've got sprawl up here too but for some reason we seem to have both an acceptance of tighter spaces in the major cities, and high land costs that force the issue. For example, Calgary's new suburban areas are around 7 to 10 units per acre, which translates to relatively small lot sizes, a mix of housing types including more multi-family, and relatively high population densities by suburban standards (10 UPA @ 640 c/sq mi - 6400 units, or potentially 12-15,000 people, per sq mile). I doubt you'd see those kinds of densities on the periphery of most major American cities.

As a uni-city it is, land is abundant. Calgary basically doesn't have a metro, where most of the metro pop lives within the city limits, but that is changing.

Denver at 152 sq miles is reasonably dense (52 sq miles being airport). To the west is Jefferson County which has more people than Denver County and to the East is Aurora, the 2nd largest city in the state, which has incredible sprawl. Calgary now has quite a few more buildings downtown and the buildings are more closely packed, even though Denver is experiencing a "mini-boom", its nothing approaching Calgary. However Denver has the Denver Tech Center down south, which has nearly as much as downtown Denver's 29 million sq ft of offices. Both cities have mountain back drops and rodeos and association with energy, although Calgary would be better compared in that respect with Houston. With 39 miles of light rail up and running and nearly a hundred more light rail and commuter rail approved, Denver is building a number of TODs around town. Calgary I believe, is building a new tallest and will be taller than anything Denver has which was a few feet taller than Calgary's before at 714 ft. Their current tallest looks like one of Denver's tallest (called "cashie" with the cash register top). Approaching 3 million Denver/Boulder is bigger population wise. Calgary and Denver have similarities. I look forward to seeing all the new buildings in Calgary next year.

I used to go to Denver quite regularly, and loved it. It does actually remind me of Calgary alot. Of all the cities in the US, it seems like the city that most resembles Calgary. Denver is obviously bigger, but the two cities have alot of similarities.

The city is really beautiful and it has a large downtown for a city its size. I love the winter pictures.
Looking at its density I am surprised about how few people live there per sq. mi./Kilimeter when compared to Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.

I dont want to burst your bubble but Calgary is really struggling with urban sprawl (hence the density value). So many people are moving to Calgary that the city allows huge ugly developments to eat up the land around the city.
The reason for the built up core is the concentration of large energy companies and corporate head offices. Calgary has a new push for intensified development vs. extensivied (concentration vs. low density burbs).
I would go to Europe if want to see how sustainable urban living is really done.

Actually, Denver is smaller - roughly half the size of Calgary. We're talking about the city, of course. I live in Denver and travel to Calgary a lot. Calgary has a much bigger downtown than Denver, but there are similarities.

I think Calgary has quite a large downtown area with a high number of large office buildings in large degree because of the high number of oil and gas companies located in Calgary. As well, it has the second highest number of head offices in Canada.
