It's now above grade on the Hastings St side.

It seems to have been fast-tracked. There's activity on the site ~12 hrs a day, 6 days a week.

^^although if you consider its only 72m, they don't really have that far to go...fairmont still has further to go and they're expecting to open at the same time.

jlousa
Mar 21, 2008, 3:03 AM
Doesn't quite work that way though, even though the fairmont has much more still to grow, I'm positive the fairmont will top out before the Coast hotel. In fact I'd wager that the Fairmont tops out before the end of summer. ;)
Of course the Fairmont will take quite sometime to complete internally due to the high standards so I imagine they might in fact finish around the same time.

That Coast has (or I guess had) to be the most underrated hotel in Vancouver. Cheap price, right on Denman, huge rooms and spectacular views.

The good news is that, during these economically uncertain times, a building so unambitious has a better chance of being completed than the Ritz-Carletons, etc.

re: the old coast, these guys really were ahead of the curve there on the rental conversion. it would be nice if someone would do the same with the chateau granville and a couple others - there will be so many $1500-2500 p/m rental units coming on the market in the coming months (with what effect, i wonder), it would be great to see some more of the less costly stock come online in the downtown peninsula.

jlousa
Jan 18, 2009, 5:42 PM
I think it's pretty obvious that the work on the conversion won't begin until after this hotel is completed and operational, and that is scheduled for Late/09.
With the games right around the corner it wouldn't make any sense to start work before that so should give a better idea of when the conversion would begin.

phesto
Jun 15, 2009, 7:21 PM
^ I think exposed concrete looks great when it is properly incorporated as a design element. Unfortunately in a lot of cases it is more a cost-saving measure and looks horrible.

Incidentally, I really disliked Flatiron's bare concrete wall on the south facade because it was a requirement due to the small floorplate rather than a design element.

I may change my mind on this one as they've planted some sort of climbing vine (not Ivy but another kind) at the base of the bare concrete wall. I'm not sure if the intent is to have it grow the full height of the building, but would look very cool if so. Picture vines climbing all the way up:

The frosted or opaque green windows has become my least favorite feature in the downtown buildings. There's simply too much of it imo. When I see for instance the Woodwards building amongst the surrounding mostly greenish coloured condos, it is striking how much nicer looking it is and how it adds contrast to the skyline. The red iron work on the sides is brilliant.

Wow. That's pretty cool. That Harvey Milk movie was pretty good. I had no idea that the gay rights movement had such humble beginnings (ie, neighbourhood and municipal politics in SF).

not condos rentals thats the plan - the coast is moving and not operating a hotel at that location

thats the big problem the union is upset as apparently a lot of the employees who are unionized are being laid off let go and the staff at the new location will not be unionized and new hirees

there is a planned rally coming up to support them sometime i think in march

to break the union

thats what starbucks does or did - the few union locations - the one on denman was union and was shut down with all staff let go - than they opened one at denman and davie... non union

common practice to break a union - like that walmart in quebec they shut down instead of deal with the union
