Nice pics, and glad you included the river. I guess Camden must have thought it was gonna be the next Brooklyn with a city hall that size. ;) :D

Thanks.

Great pics!

You know, these towers don't look half bad from this viewpoint:

Does anyone know if they are ever gonna add decoration/ornamantation to the tops of those?

City Hall is pretty ostentatious for a city of 80,000 but really, everyone just calls it City Hall. It's actually the City/County building.

I agree. They look much better from the Jersey side.

Does anyone know if they are ever gonna add decoration/ornamantation to the tops of those?
Oh those tops.

Great pictures. Love the view from the water.

Does anyone know who designed the city hall? It bares a striking resemblance to the University of Texas Tower in Austin. That building was designed by Paul Philippe Cret of Philadelphia. So I'm wondering if he also designed the city hall. Emporis notes that the architect was Edward & Green, still I wonder if Cret had a hand in it.

I'm kind of intrigued by Camden, picturing it as sort of what my city might have looked like had it been American.

Awesome photo's!

The Philly & Camden combo reminds me of a much smaller NYC & Jersey City combo.

I wish Camden got a few nice spread out 350 to 500 footers.

...Actually it would have been nice if Waterfront Square was in Camden but spread out!

What other top 30 population cities are similiar.... located in a different state and seperated by a river and very close proximity?

Washington DC and Arlington, Va?

"I guess Camden must have thought it was gonna be the next Brooklyn with a city hall that size."

Camden, in its heyday, was an industrial and shipping giant on the East Coast. Had some things gone a different way, Camden's situation may not have been that different from other well-off satellite cities. The Church of Scientology was founded there, however.

Take that as you will.

williamphilapa, besides NYC-Jersey City, there's Detroit-Windsor and DC-Arlington in the top 30.

Philadelphia is to Camden as Saint Louis is to East Saint Louis.

It's not a different state but a different country, but otherwise would qualify.

That works, Rufus.

It seems like this subforum goes a few weeks with no new Philly threads and then 10 come up within a week. Bursts of energy, we've got.

My Dad (born in the 1930's) told me that when he was a kid Camden NJ was rated "America's Prettiest City". He also told me that it had three major shopping areas. I don't have any sources or anything, just what he told me.

I love the pics VZ, especially from Camden. I really do think that Camden has a ton of potential. In fact, in the Philadelphia area if you rate neighborhoods on potential alone, I'd rate Camden near the top of the list.

I went to school in Camden for two years and worked for the City for a year. Besides the obvious loss of manufacturing and the stubborn insistence that industry would someday return Camden had a few other things going against it.

The Ben Franklin Bridge cut a swath through the wealthiest neighborhood in town, cutting off most of the rich people in the city from the downtown. Aside from that there were no other wealthy sections of Camden. Just a few middle-class spots (that are still OK parts of town) and a ton of 2 and 3 bedroom factory worker rowhouses.

Now the city has about 50% of its land area taken up by superfund sites, landfills, abandoned properties, and property owned by churches, state, federal and county governments and other tax-exempt institutions.

Camden has a long way to go but still, it's by no means hopeless. If there were just a few more basic amenities in downtown Camden I would move there. I think the transit situation there is one of the biggest obstacles. Haddon Ave, Mt. Ephraim Ave, and Federal St. are the corridors with all of the potential but right now everyone is betting on Parkside and Fairview.

My Grandma always tells me the same thing. She has loads of pictures of Camden from the 1950's and 60's. I should ask her if I can burrow them
