I can't believe this wasn't posted yet. It's basically Dubai 2! Seems like it's a good project but is useless where it is. Basic questions like "Where will all the people come from" spring to mind. Would probably be much more useful in a place like Chongqing.
Al Burj was originally supposed to be here but was moved.

The various components:

Madinat Al Arab. Completion estimate - 2015

Old masterplan:

What looks like some of the new one:

Canal District. Completion estimate - 2016

Seems to be more midrise stuff

Veneto. Completion estimate - 2012

No information about this. Seems to contain a lot of parkland, etc.

Waterfront City. Completion estimate - 2018

Masterplan by OMA, very dense.

They also seem to have thrown in some of their old proposals like the death star, etc.

Omran. Completion estimate - 2010

Labour camp serving this project and many others in the surrounding area

interesting at the very least.

and quick question, what's up with the need to break the urban fabric of the city with so many highways and super large roads? I understand that Dubai may never really become a truly ped friendly city but it seems a bit extreme to break up the city in such a way.

^^ The only parts where the masterplans are done are madinat al arab and waterfront city. The rest hasn't been designed yet so who knows if the roads will be like that or not.
It's true what you say though in general. They do that all the time with other projects.

The Death Star is back! This city is now the Ultimate Power in the Universe!
