View Full Version : Should we bring Streetcars back to Ottawa?

There were talks about revitalisation on Sparks St. with and the previous aspects of the original TMP had some lines too. So, what do you think, to complement our metro system, should we start investing in streetcars routes? I would definitely like to see the Rideau-Mtl Road sections as metro, but since costs will probably be incredibly high, I think we may see some tramway infrastructures there instead.

(I've always been for streetcars, as long as it's not our transit backbone)

I love DT Toronto for this aspect, it adds street life.

In order of priority:

From Westboro to U of O via Somerset/Wellington, Bronson, and Laurier.

From Bank & Queen to Billings Bridge via Bank St.

From Dalhousie & St. Patrick to St. Laurent Blvd. via Dalhousie and Rideau/Montreal

Here is the old map of Ottawa streetcar lines:

I would give first priority to streetcar lines on Arterial Mainstreets inside the Greenbelt where their introduction would result in creating a better5 streetscape to support more urban-type development, and start steering those streets from their suburban layouts.

Carling, Merivale, and St. Laurent, would be the first three.

I'd prefer to see them on functioning streets, rather than lost causes:
Bank St, Richmond Rd, Montreal/Rideau

For me, Montreal/Rideau and Bank are subway corridors. Surface streetcar operations on those streets, in mixed traffic, would not be reliable. And there is no way on-street parking can be eliminated from those streets.

Richmond Rd. is close to the Transitway (future MetrO), so m'eh.

For the "lost causes" to be reconquered, a streetcar line that is not in mixed traffic is the way to start. The lines would connect to other stations on the system but, more fundamentally, they would be a big first step toward humanizing those streets. The first thing they would do is narrow them for car traffic and make them less highway-like. Carling and St. Laurent especially are long and wide enough throughout most of their length to allow a streetcar ROW separated from traffic.

Even though the cutesy mixed-use condos might not pop up the next day, the first thing that would probably happen is that the employees of all the hundreds of workplaces along those streets might start taking the streetcar instead of driving. Surface parking could be freed up, possibly leading to more intensive land uses.
