Stone Temple Pilots and The Tragically Hip to headline Virgin Festival Calgary
Canada's ultimate summer festival saddles up to take over Calgary!

CALGARY, April 8 /CNW/ - Hey there buckaroos! Virgin Festival, the
biggest rock festival in Canada, is heading west on June 21 and 22, 2008. At a
media event today the excitement kicked off with the announcement of this
year's amazing festival headliners. After traveling around the globe from Sir
Richard Branson's estate in Oxford, England, the news finally dropped that
alternative hard rockers Stone Temple Pilots will headline day one and rock
icons The Tragically Hip will headline day two.

Huge disappointment IMO. A Canadian band who comes thru here once every few years and a band that is slapped back together due to the fall of Velvet Revolver. I will not be attending this concert and wish I didn't live within earshot of it.

Is Richard Branson going to bring us a time-machine to transport us back to 1994 when STP and the Hip would have been relevant?

Some of the other acts look pretty good though.

Velvet Revolver broke up because STP were getting back together.

Tragically Hip is still relevant however.

Also, is it just me, or should a press release about a concert state where the concert is actually being held? Feel free to point it out to me if I missed it, but the venue isn't mentioned.

One would have to assume it was written by committee at Virgin headquarters. No one local would use the term 'buckaroos'.

I think Fort Calgary is the venue.
I guess that is implied since they held the press event there, but isn't explicitly stated. Certainly left me guessing.

The lineup isn't earth-shattering, but not too bad. Although, if I wanted to hear the Tragically Hip, I'd just turn on the radio and wait 5 minutes.

Doubt I'd be able to get the time off considering I'm also going to Iron Maiden that month.

Sigh. Toronto's site gets some cool graphics with the CN tower fashioned into a guitar and speakers in the skyscrapers, we get a few grazing cows, a flying cow, a chuckwagon, and a cheesy old west sign.

The press release says "Stay tuned as more stellar A-list stars and local up-and-coming acts will be added to the lineup as the spring starts to bloom"
So yes, and hopefully they are more International bands, not the likes of Raine Maida or The Guess Who. Personally I would love to see Rage play V-Fest Calgary.

I saw Arcade Fire in Saskatoon on the last tour, it was just as good as you'd expect, plus 10.
I also saw Broken Social Scene there, at Amigo's, which is a relatively small mexican resto by day, music venue by night. The band (all 12 of them or whatever) had to come on stage one at a time, set up their equiptment, and stand there while the next person came on and set up, becasue of lack of back-stage and square-footage on stage. Great show.

Best show I've seen over all was Feist and BSS at the Folk Fest 2 years ago. I know Furry was there too.

I have a couple friends in Islands they are heading to town this summer, along with Wolf Parade, possibly on the same bill.

Jeff, that BSS/Feist show was as close to religious ecstasy and I have ever come- the only experience that matched the BSS second encore was when I was at a Talking Heads show in college (this was the tour that was filmed for Stop Making Sense), when Tom Tom Club took over and did Genius of Love. Edguy
Nightwish (They are actually coming)

A Star One show would make my LIFE.

It's not a band but a project by Arjen Lucassen, the genius behind Ayreon, and my username.

Well, Wolf Parade opened for Arcade Fire when I saw them in Sask. I'd toss on Sam Roberts, just to up the Cancon if nothing else. Also someone semi-obscure-but-still-with-radio-hits like Switchfoot. Maybe Evermore, but no one I know's heard of them (all the better to really shake up a lineup). Now for the real reason I posted:

That website is just about the most insulting thing I've ever seen. If Branson does a festival in San Francisco, does the website have pictures of 2 men humping on it? If NYC, is it a bunch of fat hairy Italians screaming out the windows of their brownstones? If Winnipeg, is it a frost-covered mosquito?

Seriously, it is not possible to be more stereotypical, derogatory, and insulting to Calgary. Anyone who goes to that show should be ashamed.

I am going to see Malkmus this summer at Sasquatch in Washington. As much as Pavement is my favourite band (as my user name would suggest), I'd even argue that his music is irrelevant now - certainly his last couple of solo works have been mediocre.

A Daft punk show would be outstanding! My friend saw them with Kanye West in Australia and said it was the best show he's ever seen. MIA woould be good too, but she is playing at Mac Hall next month, so I doubt she would come back for V-fest.

Fans cheated by over-played Virgin Fest lineup (http://calsun.canoe.ca/News/Alberta/2008/04/09/5234801-sun.html)
UPDATED: 2008-04-09 03:54:38 MST

By MICHAEL PLATT

Calgary Virgin Fest offers pure talent

Isn't "Virgin" supposed to mean something that hasn't been done before?

If you're like many music fans in Calgary today, you're probably feeling disappointed -- and maybe a little cheated -- to see the been-there, done-that lineup of Calgary's first Virgin Festival.

The Tragically Hip and Stone Temple Pilots: Two huge bands in the days of cassette tapes, grunge and Seinfeld, and now the headlining acts at Virgin Festival Calgary.

To quote the razor wit of one Facebook wag: "Stone Temple Pilots and The Tragically Hip ... wow, it's gonna be the hottest festival of 1998."

If you're the type whose musical tastebuds tingle to Tom Jones or The Wiggles -- both with upcoming Calgary shows -- then it probably doesn't matter who plays Virgin Festival Calgary or even if there is a Virgin Fest on June 21 and 22.

But for the rest of us, the announcement by billionaire Brit Richard Branson was a promise of musical greatness to come.

Virgin Festivals have been held since 2006 in North American cities such as Toronto, Vancouver and Baltimore, attracting acts so big as to make fans jelly-kneed with joy.

The Who, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Smashing Pumpkins, The Killers, Gnarls Barkley, Bjork, Arctic Monkeys, The Police, Beastie Boys, Modest Mouse, Amy Winehouse, Billy Talent and My Chemical Romance are all acts that have headlined past V-Fests.

When the flamboyant Branson rode in on a chuckwagon to make his Calgary concert announcement last October, music fans in this city were a-flutter with anticipation.

Who would play Branson's festival, the first major music event ever held at Fort Calgary?

Giddy rumours flew; Facebook groups started.

Radiohead, Linkin Park, The Racontuers, Led Zeppelin, Coldplay, Jay-Z, Muse, REM, Brian Wilson -- fans dreamed of the kinds of acts that might play Calgary.

And then they waited.

It was a long wait, too, but it seemed like it might be worth it -- especially when Oasis, Paul Weller and the Foo Fighters were announced as Toronto's headliners, and Nine Inch Nails, Jack Johnson and Kayne West were named as the big acts in Baltimore.

And then, yesterday morning, the wheels fell off the chuckwagon.

The Tragically Hip, a band that's played Calgary more often than the Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Stone Temple Pilots, a group that's also been here many times before, will headline.

It's not that they're bad or unpopular bands -- the Hip attracted 10,000 fans to the Saddledome last year -- but the Hip and STP simply aren't worthy of headlining a Virgin Festival.

Put the two together and it would make for a decent Saddledome show -- but a Virgin Festival?

As another Facebook fan said: "What a massive letdown after all the waiting..."

The festival saves some face with its B-list bands, including legendary live act The Flaming Lips, but again, artists such as the New Pornographers and Matthew Good pass through Calgary every few months.

Local music pundits are greeting the lineup with a bemused shake of the head, wondering why Calgary is drawing the same old, when other Virgin Festival fans are treated to the very best.

"For an event as big as this one, it's a bit disappointing," says Brad Simm, editor-in-chief of BeatRoute, a local music scene magazine.

"They're both good, solid bands, but they don't have the kind of pizzazz that normally comes w ith a concert of this size."

But Chris Baines, a spokesman for Virgin Mobile Canada, begs to differ, saying the Hip and the Stone Temple Pilots are exactly the kind of bands Calgarians were asking for -- even though the Sun can find no mention of either band in the wish-lists of online fans.

"We asked Calgarians what they wanted to see at the festival and they answered through e-mails, letters and chat groups, like Facebook," said Baines. "Of course, there are lots of other bands we'd like to see, and you never know who might be popping up over the next few weeks -- but if you ask us, we believe it's a killer lineup.

"For the first Virgin Festival Calgary ever, it's a rocking lineup."

If that's the case, why are so many Calgary music fans feeling screwed?

Will this go down in history as "The Calgary Screwjob"? As epic in scope as the classic "Montreal Screwjob" involving none other than Calgary's own Brett Hart?

Coincidence? I think not!

I'm not the biggest audiophile but even I am a little let down by the headliners, the only way Branson and Virgin can redeem themselves in my eyes is to announce that Virgin will start serving YYC!

I wouldn't saw we got screwed, it is a little dissipointing for sure, but it will still be a pretty good show. The only thing i'm not sure about is the price tag.

This will evolve to be a yearly thing right ? Maybe next years' lineup will be a little more stellar

Hopefully. If this years lineup doesn't get any better, there won't be that many people there, so they might not come back next year.

I do believe that the biggest names mentioned in the article - and the biggest names period - have only played the Baltimore show anyway (the Police, Winehouse, Beastie Boys, RHCP, etc). The lack of Oasis, as already mentioned, is likely because of an already sched stop...and wasn't Foo Fighters (the other big name on TO's list) here already just recently? Or did they skip Calgary??

Anyways, $125 seems cheap by today's standards, so doesn't look that bad really - even if most of the bands have played here before.

I do agree with you, I think that the "B" and "C" list talent is awesome. That is what V-Fest is known for. I just think that to buid up the hype for such a show you really need a big headliner or two!

STP is a pretty big headliner, the Hip not so much.

Yeah STP is pretty big! I am a total fan, but they just don't do it for me as far as a 2008 headliner goes. Add the Foos and I am there in a second!
