View Full Version : The Great Canadian Airport Thread

I figured I'd jump on the bandwagon of Great Canadian threads and start this one off with Ottawa:

Overview: the old terminal is at centre and the new terminal left of centre. The new terminal has now been expanded behind the old terminal which is in the process of being demolished.

Ottawa's airport is georgous! I love the waterfall!

That monorail at Pearson seems pretty useless to me. Everytime I'm there, it's always empty!?

Well considering hamilton's proximity to Toronto I'm surprised they have an international airport at all! How far is Person by way of train? 45 minutes? Hell getting to Trudeau from my house by BUS takes 30 minutes, and I'm on the island!

Sadly there's no direct link to Pearson by Train (neither GO n'or VIA). The only way is to drive there! Or take a TTC bus which could take 2hrs from downtown. (I know, I've done it b4).

YHM (Hamilton Int'l) was owned by Vancouver's Airport company, but was just bought by Citi Financial... so we're about to see all our airport developments take off (punn intended hehe).

The city is devlopping Rapid Transit lines, one of which goes from Downtown right to the Airport via James/Upper James and may be LRT! (most likely BRT tho)

Sadly... that's not a joke :(

That's not the airport, that's Jetport office, Ron Joyce private jet (usually flys to Fox Harbour Resort in Nova Scotia), hence the Tim Horton's.

Citi Financial, the world’s largest bank, is in the process of taking over 50% of Hamilton Airport, YVR currently owns 100% of YHM.

So what airport is this?

Nicko999
Apr 12, 2008, 10:49 PM
Mirabel! It's the largest airport in Canada and 2nd largest in the world(in terms of area). The airport size is like the whole island of Montreal.

The 1960s saw Montreal experience a tremendous economic boom. Massive construction projects, including the Montreal Metro coupled with the hosting of Expo 67 brought the city international status. More and more visitors were arriving to the city, especially by airplane, though not always by choice. The federal government required that European airlines make Montreal their only Canadian destination. This resulted in 15–20% annual growth in passenger traffic at the city's Dorval Airport. Optimistic about the city's future and its continuing ability to attract more and more visitors, government officials decided to build a new airport that would be more than able to absorb increased passenger traffic well into the 21st century.

Technically speaking, it is still the only airport in Canada with sufficient right-of-way that can be expanded to accommodate 50 million passengers per year, though a lack of traffic meant that Mirabel was never expanded beyond its first phase. It is the only non-capital airport with fewer than 200,000 passengers a year to be part of the National Airports System.

Now this airport is only used for cargo flights:yuck:

The government expropriated land from hundreds of farmers to build that disaster, which was quite a big controversy at the time and still resonates with those living in the area today. I heard that they actually built a Metro station underneathe Mirabel with the hope that the train would be expanded there in the future (which never happened, obviously). I would love to go down and check out the abandoned station, would be pretty creepy probably. Anyone have pics?

Apparently they were approaching capacity at peak periods before the airport expansion; however, a large factor in going ahead with the expansion of the new terminal was due to the cost in maintaining the old terminal.

Thats was a huge waste of land. Like that could all be flying through montreals airport now couldnt it? Could all that land not be used for farming or anything else of the such. instead of an airport that wont be used until like the year 2500.

Canada's got some fantastic airport infrastructure what with all the new redevelopments over the past 10 years (and ongoing). Not a single major airport has not seen massive construction. I think Ottawa's takes the cake as the best redevelopment of a mid-sized airport, far better then what's been done at Edmonton and Halifax (not to begrudge those airports which are great facilities), though we'll see how Winnipeg's turns out. Vancouver has maintained an amazing facility as well. While I'm very happy with the new T1 at Pearson, my opinion is that while the departure halls are impressive because of their sheer size, the cavernous facility feels lifeless, especially when compared to YVR and new international hub facilities in Europe and Asia. I also am not impressed with the food options at Pearson... they seem to be trying too hard with the proper sit-down restaurants, when most hurried travelers would be content with familiar take out.

All the photos shown of Phase I and Phase II were taken before the areas were fully operational, just sneak peaks (at the time) of the new buildings. Though, I must say that I don't feel crowded (ever) in the new terminal, except in the long line-ups for security check in the morning. The incredibly high ceilings in much of the building probably account for a lot of that. Things will get busier though, as the traffic is growing between 7-10% per year. Soon we'll be leaving the 0-5 million passenger class for world airport awards (over 4 million last year)!

The International Facilities Project, which would have renovated and enlarged concourses B and C, was announced in 2007 as cancelled for the time being due to ballooning costs. The Airport Authority has decided to proceed with the eastern terminal expansion next, and likely with the parallel 14,000' (4.27Km) runway thereafter.

Trivia: YYC used to be called the Calgary Municipal Airport, and before that it was called McCall field, after the WWI ace and aviation pioneer from Calgary.

As a personal aside to add to that, I've often thought that Calgary International should be renamed officially to McCall International Airport, and Calgary-McCall in common usage.

I have to say we have a nice air traffic control tower though.

Mirabel! It's the largest airport in Canada and 2nd largest in the world(in terms of area). The airport size is like the whole island of Montreal.

Now this airport is only used for cargo flights:yuck:

we used mirabel when we flew to israel in the 80's

i had to spend hours and hours and hours there wandering around alone as a curious 11 year old

Anyone have a photo of the open seating area in front of the Starbucks (the Starbucks by Gate A that is), with views over downtown and the mountains? That's probably my favourite "window" in Canadian airports (from what I've seen).

YVR is of course a beautiful airport for a medium-sized airport...very bright and open, and easy to get around quickly.

Winnipeg's old one is terrible..hated spending time there. Can't wait to see this new one - looks real promising!

YYZ's Maple Leaf Lounge is fantastic - and makes all the other ones look tiny in comparison. Not sure if I really like the looks of the new terminal though...too white maybe? What's the passenger traffic up to there now though?? 30 million a year? Definitely ready to take on 50 million!

Halifax's airport looks real nice from those pics - one I haven't seen in person.

fugly yul airport. This is the worst canadian airport, crowded between 3 always congested highways with no rapid link to downtown. Have you ever seen the HWY 20 between YUL and downtown, it crosses the ugliest parts of Montreal.

What a bad decision to move this airport to a shithole in dorval.

agreed. But the airport wasn't moved there, its always been there, but the Mirabel fiasco led to this.

Personally, if Mirabel had a rapid rail connection to downtown it would have worked, but it was sabotaged by the PQ. Plus the fact that the fed had to Expropriate 5000 farmers from their lands they had an obligation to make Mirabel work.

^^If YMX actually worked, it wouldn't be such a headache, from what I'm observing. Conceptually, Mirabel had a great idea going.

Hell, by now, it might have expanded to 2 terminals if it had the chance.

^ nice. I like the curved "swoop" effect of the roofline. Very aerodynamic-ish. Which, I guess makes sense.

There's so much more area covered than the actual renderings. The new terminal will truly be bigger than our current one!
